Next up in the Fast Forward Audio Series, we present: Ryan James Ford

During the 1990’s while growing up in western Canada, Ryan James Ford was introduced to electronic music through the local rave and club scene. He began to discover, study, and collect the music he heard at these parties which consisted of a mix of Jungle, UK hardcore, Techno,House, IDM, and ambient.
Fast forward many years later to Berlin, where Ryan and his productions found a solid home on the legendary Clone records from Rotterdam and has other production’s on Anetha’s Mama Told Ya, Ida’s SÄVY, Marcel Dettmann’s MDR, Answer Code Request’s ACR, Dream Ticket, and his own label SHUT. PLUR is the new record label from Ryan James Ford. The inaugural release 'Ripping EP' begins a new path of club focused tracks from himself and other like-minded contemporaries. PLUR will act as a tool to discover new energy on modern dance floors.

Ryan’s sets and productions are rich with inspiration from his time spent living in Calgary where he had interests not only in electronic music but also in hip hop, post rock, reggae, jazz, experimental, and even some interest in metal. He began experimenting with production in the early 2000’s but it wasn’t until 2013, with a move to Berlin, that he started investigating his musical capabilities seriously.
Even though two decades have passed since Ryan’s introduction to electronic music, his love for early Warp, Metalheads, Metroplex, Novamute, Skam, Downwards, etc. can still be heard resoundingly clear in the strength and versatility of his productions and sets. The future will see Ford continue to play out and release on labels that share his like-minded affiliation and roots in the electronic music community.

Menou / iwamaki is a Japan-based DJ and live performer specialising in Drone & Ambient Techno. Since starting her DJ career in 2015, she has performed at some of Japan's most iconic venues, including Contact Tokyo, VENT Tokyo, sound space α, Kagurane, and Soup. In 2017, she took the stage at the legendary Dommune, further establishing herself in the underground scene.

In 2019, Menou expanded her craft, introducing her live sets, which feature a distinct approach to sound layering. Her live performances have earned her international recognition, including appearances at Mostra Festival in Barcelona (April 2023).

Menou's DJ and live performances offer a deep, immersive journey through drone soundscapes, where subtle, evolving layers of sound create a rich, atmospheric experience. Her goal is to invite listeners into a meditative state, where they can appreciate the nuanced shifts and textures that define her sound.

A Drone Odyssey: MENOU (Live Set)

"I aimed to create a mosaic consisting of different layers, blending spherical, well-crafted textures into one another. Additionally, I wanted to maintain a mature, rough, and heavy vibe without making the pace too fast. As with everything I do, I hope to achieve a continuous flow that sends listeners into a transcendental state of mind without distracting them with big breaks, heavy buildups, or abrupt cuts. In terms of equipment, I used three CDJs and a record player. This setup allows me to always have at least two tracks running simultaneously, keeping the set dynamic and engaging throughout.

As you can see, I wear a mask, so I prefer not to share too much personal information. I’d rather  let the music speak for itself, leaving it up to you to decide who I am. That said, here’s a small glimpse into my world: I’m a professional audio engineer, a lecturer in sound design, music production, and DJing, and the proud father of two beautiful souls. Interestingly, I often forget to play my own tracks in my podcasts. Even after more than 15 years in the field, I remain a huge fan of other artists’ music — more so than of my own. This podcast is a perfect example of that."
