The first track we recorded with our current bass player in the new line up, and unreleased. All improvised.  Presently unreleased music but building towards a second album. The organ solo on this track was not played by Dean, but rather the sax player Jim Goetsch.

The Stratos Ensemble reformation is starting to come together.  Won't be long before material for a new CD is formed.  This track won't make it to the CD because of technical difficulties, but it's a perfectly good track, given away for free.  The fender rhodes solo on this song was not played by Dean but rather the sax player Jim Goetsch. Totally improvised; two keyboardists and an ensemble.  High quality mp3.

This track is a rusty-but-good Brand X rehearsal in 2004, with Surface 10 (Dean De Benedictis) on keyboards.  Guitarist John Goodsall was the only original Brand X member present in this recording (the originals consisting of Percy Jones, Phil Collins and Robin Lumley).  This version of the song Nuclear Burn was one of a handful of songs recorded during 2004 rehearsals involving the newer line up.

Snippets of my new extended LP (about ten hours long).

Ambient meditative music made from random synth tones and random note progressions, improvised then slowed down.

I wanted to explore randomness and control on this piece. Also, I wanted to make a really long album. All these old tunes from electronic artists surfacing, suddenly hours and hours of stuff to listen to, I felt I was getting an idea of a period of time and personality beyond the tracks themselves.. Generalizing the listening.. And there was that nostalgia of the ambient bits on old rave.. (The strings on sweet harmony!..) and i got deep into the the new weird ambient stuff only released on tape - digitalis stuff, analog concept, gorman, emuul, celer, 0pn, mark mcguire..

There was this program on an old coldcut album called playtime, it cut up the samples and automated the music then you could fiddle with these faders and change it but it was never clear what they did exactly. I spent hours on that, I can't get it working now as I haven't got Windows 95 anymore (not that there's much difference). I do some data management and colleagues are often dumbfounded when my computer is doing work on it's own - i set up mouse recorders for repetitive tasks.. then let it get on with it. When i was a kid i liked listening to 45s on 33 and vice versa.. there was an old Bukem release that i swore was downtempo that turned out to be DnB and then getting back into the slowdowns with the chopped n screwed stuff..All these things were percolating with what I wanted to do here.

So I did a quick formula on excel to give me a random sequence of 4 notes and another to tell me how many note progressions will be in each track. Then i searched for a synth plugin that had a randomize function and used the first one i found (acidrack). So, the notes i play and the sound is pretty random*.

But then I do have an element of control - i play the notes and can change the volume. However, there's a reciprocity because i'm improvising the music and this is based on how the notes sound together, the reverberations in and between the notes, how i feel at the time, and I play for as long as I feel like.

Also, I've got the choice.. i mean, i've given myself the choice, of whether to play the different note progressions in the same tone or press random again.. so if it's a harsh tone I can do an additional one (as long as excel said i was allowed to). Of course it might give me an even harsher tone and the note sequence doesnt go, but it was a risk i was willing to take. In addition, i found that acidrack doesnt randomize the octave selector or the lfo2/arpeggiate selector so i was allowed to choose those too.

Then to randomize it further I stretched the track to 30 minutes long. This also hopefully made it sound more ambient (control) and meant that each track could be seen as an album in it's own right. i like that fractal recursion idea of an album made up of a load of albums. Of course, i got better at learning how the track would sound slowed down by how long I played for in the first place.. control control control.

If I didnt like how the track sounded after all this I overdubbed with a different pitch, re-amped with self-feedback generating digital guitar fx, or just tried to accept it. I never discarded a track.

Solid Steel in association with Serato (13th May) Roly Porter takes charge of Hr 1 this week. He began his career as part of Vex’d alongside Kuedo, releasing two albums, Degenerate and Cloud Seed, both on Planet Mu, along with several singles on Bristol’s Subtext imprint. He later returned to Subtext under his own name to begin a solo project, releasing 'Aftertime' and 'Life Cycle of a Massive Star'. Earlier this year he released Third Law on TriAngle and 2 tracks from the album feature in his mix alongside music from Surgeon, Kowton, Amnesia Scanner, Yearning Kru and Aisha Devi.

Bio:

Rene Lorenzo, dj and music producer born in Madrid, began his career in the electronic musical scene in 2001 as a Dj-residence in club Merlin. During that time we could enjoy his sets in parties and raves nearby Madrid.

In 2004 joined the collective Xrave, playing in private parties and events like Power Sound Festival, and cubs like Club 20, Torsion, Velada,Zer03, Maxim, Okana and Made among others.

 With the newborn label CELLULAR MEMORY Rene Lorenzo’s artistic career is consolidated. The passion he feels for electronic music is reflected in his productions where styles like techno, minimal, ambient, house and downtempo are mixed.

His dj-sets are based on the underground techno sound, he tries out with another music styles like chicago house, broken beat,Electronic or ambient but always with his characteristic and eclectic touch.
He's Vinyl and hardware sound lover.
Nowadays he is focused in the production of electronic music, under his label called "Cellular Memory" he launched his first 12 inch EP, Seismo

This is an unreleased track by the Stratos Ensemble, available here for free download. It is considered a part of their scrap material of 2013, but they were still moved enough by this particular track that sharing it seemed fitting to them. This track was improvised; it will not be released on any album, mainly due to minor audio blemishes in the recording that cannot be removed, which you may or may not notice.

Stratos Ensemble excerpt 2: 12-22-18

The Stratos Ensemble is a progressive jazz band, the brainchild of producer Dean De Benedictis. The Fateless Flows Collective was an organization that Dean once ran, but now is simply the brand canopy that represents many of his extended projects, such as collaborations with original FF members and related material. Dean has decided to merge both his Stratos Ensemble content and his general Fateless Flows content on this particular SC page. 

The company name was originally the name of an electronic music collective Dean ran from 2003-05. From 2007-11 there was a plan to relaunch Fateless Flows as a record label, but it fell through. What remains are video channels on Youtube and Vimeo, and this Soundcloud page. Dean keeps his art and content coming, so he still uses the FF brand to release anything he works on that he also maintains rights control of, be it solo efforts or collaborative. Dean also has a separate SC page for his solo material.
