Barcelona-based artist Marina Herlop joins PAN with a striking new single, titled "miu". The artist invites the listener to step into her otherworldly dreamscape and in turn go down a sonic rabbit hole into her garden of forking paths. Resisting attempts to interpret her work, Marina Herlop prefers to create open worlds which nourish and stimulate the imagination. Experimenting freely with konnakol syllables and carnatic rhythms harnessing the processed human voice and electronics, "miu" can be treated as a black box or cenobitic toy which the listener can project their desires and dreams onto.

Marina Herlop is often described as a pianist, a lingering remnant of her classical training. But what strikes the listener on Herlop’s breakout track miu is the intricate trickery of her voice, tracing rhythmical clusters around the subtlest of musical beds, in a technique inspired by Carnatic music of Southern India. 

miu, the opening track of Herlop’s new studio album Pripyat, was among the first songs that the young Catalan artist made on a computer, after two albums - 2016’s Nanook and 2018’s Babasha - that brought spectral elegance to the sound of piano and voice. This spirit of adventure continues into Pripyat, Herlop’s first full album produced on a computer, and her most intensely emotional work to date. 

Listening to Pripyat you can feel the emotional toil and creative endeavour that went into the record. Fans of Nanook and Babasha will recognise the combination of melancholic piano and elegant vocal lines that is found on Pripyat tracks like abans abans. But Pripyat has a far fuller, almost chaotic sound when compared to Herlop’s previous work, with the addition of electronic drums, electric bass lines and a wealth of sublime production effects. 

Added to this production expertise are songs of incredible grace and poise. Kadish is a spectral torch song rendered in emotional 3D by Herlop’s gorgeous voice; ubunto has a feeling of deep longing and lingering sorrow; and shaolin mantis is like a pop song refracted through disorienting production effects and percussive vocal cut ups. Pripyat is the perfect combination of computer production trickery and intimate emotional release.

In partnership with CHANEL, i-D have launched Intangible Matter, an immersive online experience created by Lucy Hardcastle for The Fifth Sense inspired by CHANEL Nº5 L'eau.   

To complement the interactive space, a soundtrack called “Xiaoya · Blossoming Flowers  / 小雅·裳裳者华” has been created by producer @Fatima-Al-Qadiri featuring @Li-Yuchun (Chris Lee). The song name refers to a poem from The Book of Odes, China’s oldest collection of verses and a mainstay of traditional Chinese education, reinterpreted here for a new generation.  
   
Working together for the first time through remote recording, Fatima and Li each bring their unique take and experience to the project: Fatima Al Qadiri is a widely celebrated producer and visual artist, whilst Li Yuchun is one of China’s most iconic singing superstars and a fashion stalwart.

Carlos Marta is the Tijuana-based producer behind Benfika, an enigmatic music project from Infinite Machine that released his debut on the imprint back in 2015 with the EP 121214, taking him to open for Four Tet, Ben Ufo and play at Mutek festival in Mexico. In his most recent comeback Ruinas, he presents a mystical and ethereal release where he unveils his most overwhelming and rousing side with 5 absorbing and captivating tracks.

Ruinas is an eerie exploration on organic, celestial and crystalline sounds. A set of compositions effused in a synthetic and futuristic orchestral experience that incites cathartic sensations. The warm and meticulously put-together melodies of the 5 pieces that compose this EP generates a utopian sonic environment with otherworldly and mystical backgrounds.

Influenced by the powerful narrative components in Benfika’s production, Ruinas summons the memories and resilience of another dimension, where mythical surroundings emerge with arcane possibilities. Cyclic imaginaries of ancestral yet futuristic references collide in a dialogue between mixed dualities; pain and healing, desolation and disclosure, uncertainty and hope, evoking the feeling of an ongoing transformation.

The carefully processing on the melodies, samples and tonalities that Benfika meticulously assembled in 
Ruinas don’t follow an accurate musical structure but were rather conceived as a living sonic-ecosystems, dissolving in complex layers of aerial ambiences.

In Exodexo the delicate harmonies of otherworldly frequencies resonate like an alien whisper while the gathering of synthetic voices in Pentimento creates a sacred invitation for a futuristic ritual. The deep and trance-indulging sonorities of Mundo Schizo crash with a percussive field of disruption, and the uncanny atmospheres of Ríos de Azoth dissolves for the unearthly vibes of Ollín, where overwhelming choruses and dislocated pianos mutate in immaculate melodies.

Ruinas It’s a promise of a new beginning, where devotional possibilities can coexist with the inherent chaos of spirituality. It is music created from a wide perception of entropy and the prospect of becoming-with transmutation. A reprogramming of the organic existence for unphysical transcendence.

Rituals that stream violently
through infinite cracks in time
generational chants stored in the abyss
reveal intrinsic shadows coded into every seed.
