"Named after his late grandfather Birendra Nath Bose, 'Biren' is Kami-O's first full length project and 2nd self release, after 2020s 'Hara' EP.

"Musically, the album is an exploration of his Indian heritage, taking inspiration from various forms of traditional Indian music and combining them with his usual 140bpm style.

"Starting out as an EP, the project quickly developed into a longer form concept as more ideas came to mind. To complete the project, an artwork was made by his mother and Anglo-Indian artist Helen Bose as a visual compliment to the music."

"‘SPLASH’ is the follow up to the massive ‘DISRESPECT’ single that SLOWIE and UNKEY released on WHEEL & DEAL in 2021. Following their signature dark, energetic sound, ‘SPLASH’ hits a little harder with a juddering distorted bass pattern that filters up and down and swirls around SLOWIE’S bars that compliment the beat perfectly by filling the space in the half step groove with a next level of energy. This is a banger of a track that will smash any dancefloor from Dubstep to Grime to Garage. The content in SLOWIE’S bars is entertaining enough but the level of production from UNKEY puts the icing on the cake, this is future Dubstep that breaks genre barriers."

This is the debut release of yet another artist to the FKOF family, and we’re pretty pleased with the material on this four tracker…

‘Hippoflip’s a bit of a nascent talent in the 140 space with one solo EP to his name prior to our effort together. We first came across him earlier this year with the release on Montpellier’s Noizion and got quickly chatting after hosting a premiere of one of the tunes. Hippo’s take on sound system music caught our eyes and ears from there and things progressed pretty quickly after that. In fact, looking back at the chat log, he sent us two tunes, we signed them, he sent us two more and (after a bit of back and forth with our resident A&R wizard Korrupt) that became what you’re about to listen to…

‘Our 58th release on the main FKOF Records digital imprint launches with what Hippo described as a ‘laidback dubby track’ when he sent it our way. ‘Assif’ is just that, with a bonus soupçon of our much-loved beats, bass and space ingredients on the top. Track two, ‘Bla Bla Bla’ takes no prisoners as ‘an aggressive triplet one-dropper’. That pretty much sums it up, but we’re keen to experience this in front of the subs as we suspect there’ll be a screwface or two on this one. Banger. As we move towards the tail-end of FKOFd058 we take things down a notch with ‘Haha Ok’. It’s a tune that brings a new side to a vibe that fits well within the FKOF Records back catalogue – one that feels like some of our earlier material. All sharp percs, clever atmospheres and some wicked sampling. Last, but definitely not least, we end with ‘No Retreat’. Luscious keys and a nod back to the dubby tip we found on ‘Assif’ with its rolling kicks into the second drop.  

‘Hippo’s early into his releases but is clearly realising his potential for building quality material. These four tunes caught our attention and hopefully catch yours, too. Keep your eyes on this guy, there’s raw talent we’re excited to see develop!’

2023 marks FKOF Records’ 10th year as an imprint, and we’re pretty proud of our track record over the last decade. We’ve seen some of 140bpm’s rising stars – Chokez, Argo, Causa, Kodama, Ourman, 11th Hour, WZ to name a few – announce their talents to the genre and then go on to establish themselves as world-recognised talent. ‘If you’ve caught the FKOF Sessions show on SWU FM (RIP) or Subtle Radio throughout 2022, you’ll have heard a track played on an almost month basis. For those that know their classical music, you’ll maybe have recognised a nifty flip of Allegri’s 'Miserere' – taking the goosebump-inducing material down a darker path. The genius behind that tune, 'Deus', is Matt Darkai. At this point, we can’t not give uncle N-Type a shout out, because it was through Wheel & Deal and Darkai’s 'Immortal' EP we discovered Matt’s talents. We talked tunes at the start of this year, Matt sent us some dubs, and the rest is history. 

‘FKOFd059 kicks off with 'Ox' (suitably visualised on the EP cover by the wonderful Lal Yetki), all cavernous atmospherics and sub pressure. The second inclusion is the aforementioned 'Deus', which you’ll either have heard already or you’ll very quickly understand why it’s one of this year’s tunes for us. Next up we have the suitably-named 'Danger', all wobbly synths and main-room 2am madness. It’s a lot. Last, but definitely not least, we end with 'Swamps'. It settles things down into a deeper groove, all growls and crisp percussion. The second drop’s a lot, as well. To round things out, because it’s the end of the year and we like celebrating, we’ve also included a FKOF Free Download alongside the EP – Matt’s 'Loud Voices' bootleg, reworking another classic with his signature brooding twist.  

‘We think Matt Darkai’s a perfect addition to the FKOF Records family and sound –  beats, bass and space through and through. He’s released on a bunch of decent labels to date, so we’re delighted to welcome him to ours, and we know this track record will continue. Watch this space.’

“Continuing where Oddkut and Abstrakt Sonance’s FKOFv007 left off, our 8th record is a collaborative affair – three artists, four tunes and a whole lot of weight. @11th_Hour is one of our long-standing collaborators, having appeared on our second ever EP back in 2013, and @Substrada is quickly following in Jason’s footsteps with his latest outing with us. And, as you’d suspect, we’re delighted to welcome Charles back after his epic (collab) 'FKOFd046' in 2020. Last, but definitely not least, we welcome @Kusmo to the FKOF family – an artist we’ve super excited about. 

“'FKOFv008'’s been doing the rounds for most of 2022, with two solo outings for Substrada and two collaborative efforts. We’ve had some epic DJ support from the likes of Mala, but it’s hard to choose a favourite from across this record. ‘Coolin’ With The Gang’ is signature Substrada; all spooky atmospheres, suffocating sub pressure and a few vocal samples that have upset a few radio stations over the last 12 months. It’s a banger. The second Aside is the meditative ‘Predator Flow’ – eyes down power and our favourite beats, bass and space recipe. Watch for this one! The third inclusion, the Kusmo collab entitled ‘Wump’, does what you’d expect. It is, as it proudly exclaims, “the shit”. We’re excited to see where these two take their efforts (separately and together)! The record closes with the absolute scenes ‘Colossus’ has inspired across the dance floors this year, with Substrada and 11th Hour joining forces to create one of our tunes of the year. It is relentless.

I think it's safe to say that Substrada's consistent work over the last couple of years hasn't gone unnoticed. Enjoying releases on the likes of Locus Sound, Infernal Sounds and Dread Or Dead, the Belgian producer has become one of the more prolific in the genre and the latest imprint to recognise his excellence is FatKidOnFire, who offer him a spot on the vinyl exclusive branch of their catalogue. As the only record of it's kind to come from FatKidOnFire this year, Substrada not only demonstrates his distinctive sound, but also joins up with two similarly talented producers, 11th Hour and Kusmo. "Ominous synths and war cry breath their way through the intro, guided by a steady set of hi-hats and some badboy bongos. The dimensions of the growls that are revealed at the drop are so large that they cover a large portion of the sound field, making them sound liquefied, which may remind you of the good ol’ Catacombs days. 

"Lowryder successfully implements vocal samples to strengthen both drops. While the first announces Sea of Green's heaviness, the second one simply asks for a rewind. The overwhelming mid-range is expanded through the producer's use of deadly delay times and a heavy set of layers. Combined, the elements involved give this tune some serious class. Hooderz member Lowryder has created a serious statement. This track is an instant favourite - one best suited for any deep, dark endeavour!"

"Ollie303 opens his Author remix with a wall of subbass pressure, while the Jah factor slowly raises to the ultimate climax. The producer’s approach of minimalising works like a charm, giving the first drop it needs to drop jaws to the floor. Vocals cut through the sound spectrum with precision, while harsh snare hits and other percussive hits slowly join force in paying respects to Zion. 

"The way the vocal is centred during the break gives the second drop the extra punch it deserves, making the Ollie303 remix an excellent stepper to meditate with. The Jah On Road rework suggests the producer knows exactly what forward forever means…”

The FKOF review:
"The debut FKOF free from Marietta's Drew's Theory really does live up to its title. 'Organic' is a slow and sumptuous journey across the soundscapes in Drew's Theory's mind, one that opens with a repeating guitar loop that's slowly added to. Percussion adds the pace before the drop hits and the guitar fades out and the sub rises. It's a clear combination of the Drew's Theory influences, with hints of reggae fluidly mixing with hip-hop and trip-hop vibes. 

"There's a slight switch up during the break, with more elements added and growls coming in as the second drop rolls through. With the guitar hook returning to ripple across the sound field, the only thing that seems to be missing from 'Organic' is a vocal. It's a worthy addition to our collection of FKOF frees and we hope to have more material from Drew's Theory in the future!"

It’s been almost twelve months – to the day – since the last FKOF Records release (Roklem & Sebalo’s brilliant FKxF EP in March 2023). As you may know, last year marked the closure of our first decade as an imprint, and we celebrated in true FatKidOnFire fashion, by having most of the year off. Not that we didn’t get anything done – there were two FKOF weddings and a bunch of other awesome activity to focus. With the new year now properly with us, we figured it was high time to get back on the wagon and get the new tunes rolling out the door. So here’s FKOFd060…

‘As ever, we’ve been testing a lot of upcoming FKOF Records material on the monthly FKOF Sessions on Subtle Radio - or the bi-monthly collab show on Radio Buena Vida with Kami-O. The tunes that have become FKOFd060 have featured across both shows for what feels like forever, alongside a whole host of other material from fellow US-based producers. The latest wave (we won’t call it new, it’s been going on for ages) of American dubstep producers are starting to feel like they’re really finding their niche and we’re stoked to bag four tunes (and a FKOF freebie) from Mikrodot, one of the wave’s rising stars. 

‘Our 60th digital EP - FKOFd060 – once again beautifully visualised by our resident artiste Lal Yetki, kicks off with ‘Girl from Twin Cities’. It’s a sumptuous, smoky roller; all warm subs and floaty atmospherics. Next up, we’ve the slightly heavier ‘Ember’ – crisp percussive pressure and the wobblier vibes that hark back to Fabriclive.37. Track three, ‘Enlightenment’, strips things back to our beats, bass and space recipe and is a firm FKOF favourite. The final EP inclusion, ‘Repressed’, continues the wobblier themes found earlier in the release with more gunfinger-inspiring vibes. It’s a fitting end to our latest American-made release on FKOF Records. Except it’s not, because we’ve also got a FKOF freebie from Mike to celebrate his debut with us. Some Coki-inspired madness. It bangs!

‘We’re 11 years into our journey as a record label, and we keep finding producers and material that continues to excite us. Our 60th digital release is a rowdy affair, and has been a labour of love between us and the artists (in ever sense) involved. We hope you enjoy it as much as we’ve enjoyed putting it together!’

Known for his growly basslines, Umbra manages to catch the same drift with the unique track-title '22%' at the 140 BPM range.
