"Taoists believe that there are two opposing yet complementary forces in the natural world: yin and yang. Many natural dualities such as male and female, light and dark, high and low, hot and cold, water and fire and life and death are thought of as physical manifestations of the yin- yang concept. This ancient Eastern paradigm parallels the concept in modern physics of positive and negative forces creating the proton, the electron and the neutron.

"The Eight Trigrams of Steppas Records* derive their inspiration from the ancient Book of Changes (The I-Ching), which states that the forces of yin and yang create the eight primordial features of the universe represented by the Eight Trigrams. Each Trigram is depicted as a symbol comprised of three lines, a straight line symbolises yang and a broken line symbolises yin. These eight symbols are representations of all naturally occurring processes, they represent movement and change. The Eight Trigrams of Steppas Records are an interpretation of the ever changing, myriad sounds of the universe: Forward thinking bass music with a deep roots foundation.

In 2015, Brain Damage presented the album « Walk The Walk » — seen now by many as a centerpiece of his discography —, featuring 10 original songs, composed in collaboration with the legendary Horace Andy, Willi Williams, Winston Mc Anuff, Ras Michael and Kiddus I, that he met in Kingston, Jamaica, at mythical Harry J Studio. One year later, we therefore welcome the release of « Talk The Talk », gathering the dub versions of these tracks.

To highlight each of them, the producer chose to have them vocally introduced, as it used to be good form to back in the days, calling on another legend in the person of Father Wee Pow, founder of the major Jamaican sound-system Stone Love, that call all the shots on the Island since … 1972 … Each dub version then develops with lots of echoes, Singers Talk The Talkreverberations, surprises, fake accidents and true mastery through sound texture manipulation, sometimes bruitist, juxtaposed with Elders’ firing choruses, appearing here and there as references to the original versions. Also of note is that each track systematically concluded by vocal interventions in the form of the singers’ interview extracts, taken from talks that were conducted following the studio sessions at Harry J Studio, one year earlier, thanks to the complicity of the two producers, Sam Clayton Jr and Stephen Stewart, without whom, none of this would have been possible.

Ironically, if Brain Damage is acclaimed for many years as one of the leading activists of the French and international dub scene, « Talk The Talk » feels like his first proper dub album. May it sound like an exercise in style, it is mainly a cornerstone within a wider project, complemented by another essential part to its understanding, this time in the form of a documentary.

Joined during his Jamaican journey by the director Wasaru, it seems obvious to Brain Damage that what they got here with « Walk The Walk » extends way beyond the artistic realm: listening to these living legends telling about their childhood memories has indeed a true heritage significance. Between a photograph of Jamaican life of the 60s & 70s, anecdotes about mythical figures and historic milestones of the Island, and personal confidences, these are as many stories within the history, narrated in this 8 episode documentary series.
The phrase “talk the talk, walk the walk” meaning “backing up one’s rhetoric with deeds”, perfectly reflects this project as a whole, as each of its dimensions has be considered, and intellectualized, before its very completion.


► FATHER WEE POW from the mighty Stone Love

Winston « Wee Pow » Powell founded Stone Love sound system in 1972. Soon well known for its sound quality, it quickly becomes one of the most popular in Jamaica. Still active nowadays, it is a true institution in itself, and by extension, a trend indicator whose influences regularly spread throughout the world, like each musical movement that developed in Jamaica for many years. One of the longevity secrets of Wee Pow’s project seems to stem from his excellence in the art of bringing together around himself, the very cream of the crop of Djs and selecters of the Island, bringing a fresh and young perspective necessary to constantly reinvent itself.

As the cover and the title suggest, I wonder in music about the roots of great civilizations but also about their downfalls. Many peplums were sampled for the occasion: The Egyptian (Michael Curtiz, 1954), the History of Ruth (Henry Koster, 1960) or the famous Moses (Cecil Blount DeMille, 1956) but also, in another style, the terrifying and necessary Salo or the 120 days of Sodom (1975) by Pasolini. The Hollywood vision of Antiquity, notably through dialogues, offers an inexhaustible source of inspiration in and inevitably gives a cinematic dimension to this project.
The album consists of 9 tracks and an animation clip drawn and produced by me. The atmosphere is at first rather melancholy and disturbing mixing stepper bass, drums trap, samples of piano and violin to then gently slide into a more reggae roots spirit with the intervention of the sweet voice of the argentine voice of Vanesa and with Meïssa on the harmonica with whom I had already recorded on the album "Worlds Inside" in 2015. I hope you will like it.

Comme la pochette et le titre le suggèrent, je m'interroge en musique sur les racines des grandes civilisations mais aussi sur leurs chutes. Beaucoup de péplums ont été samplés pour l'occasion : L'Egyptien (Michael Curtiz,1954), l'Histoire de Ruth (Henry Koster,1960) ou encore le célèbre "Les 10 commandements" (Cecil Blount DeMille,1956) mais aussi, dans un autre style, le terrifiant et nécessaire Salo ou les 120 journées de Sodome (1975) de Pasolini.  La vision Hollywoodienne de l'Antiquité, à travers notamment des dialogues, offre une  source d'inspiration intarissable en et donne inévitablement une dimension cinématique à ce projet. 
L'album est composé de 9 tracks et d'un clip d'animation dessiné et réalisé par mes soins. L'ambiance est au départ plutôt mélancolique et inquiétante mélangeant basses stepper, batterie trap, samples de piano et de violon pour ensuite glisser tranquilement dans un esprit plus reggae roots avec l'intervention de douce voix de l'argentine Vanesa et de Meïssa à l'harmonica avec qui j'avais déjà enregistré sur l'album "Worlds Inside" en 2015.

Se tomaron muestras de muchas pepitas para la ocasión: el egipcio (Michael Curtiz, 1954), la historia de Ruth (Henry Koster, 1960) o el famoso Moisés (Cecil Blount DeMille, 1956) pero también, en otro estilo, el Salo aterrador y necesario o los 120 días de Sodoma (1975) de Pasolini. Al principio, la atmósfera es bastante melancólica y perturbadora, mezclando bajos paso a paso, trampa de batería, muestras de piano y violín para luego deslizarse suavemente hacia un espíritu de raíces más reggae con la intervención de la dolce voz de la argentina Vanesa y de Meïssa en la armónica con la que ya había grabado en el álbum "Worlds Inside" en 2015.
