The lo-fi dust from their sell-out debut 'Honey Milk and Blood' EP – critically-acclaimed by NME, DIY, Brooklyn Vegan and bloggers worldwide – has been truly blown away with big guitars, big drums, and even bigger choruses as Shunkan transformed itself from the bedroom project of 21-year-old LA-born (but NZ based) Marina Sakimoto to an unmistakably natural full band affair.
 
With the sessions recorded in Lyttleton, Christchurch NZ, Sakimoto says of the record “the inspiration was honesty and clarity, and the struggle of keeping your demons at bay. The lyrics are vulnerable and straight forward with hints of abstract imagery and setting.”

Since their formation just a couple of years ago, Salt Lake City’s No Sun have been quietly crafting loud, confident, and modern shoegaze. Originally a solo project for singer/ guitarist Jordon Strang to experiment with, No Sun has since grown into a nuanced and voluminous four piece.

In the tradition of Swervedriver and Failure, and contemporaries like Nothing and Pity Sex, No Sun’s debut album ‘If Only’ swells with walls of reverb and texture. It’s shoegaze for those who can appreciate the loudest and dreamiest aspects of the genre. Lyrically, the album leans mostly toward introspection and existential doubt, and Jordon's coping with depression, anxiety, and love.

‘If Only’ will be released on January 20th on limited edition vinyl, as well as digitally. With a full slate of national touring in the works, and a history of playing alongside bands as diverse as True Widow, Foxing, and Creepoid, 2017 will prove to be a year filled with new music and touring for a young, yet quickly growing band.

Widely regarded as the 20th century’s most important singer of English traditional song, Shirley Collins is someone who was born to invoke the old songs. Alongside her sister Dolly, she stood at the epicentre of the folkmusic revival during the 1960s and ‘70s. But in 1980 she developed a disorder of the vocal chords known as dysphonia, which robbed her of her unique singing voice and forced her into early retirement. 

The Ballad Of Shirley Collins - which premiered at this year’s London Film Festival - tells this story, though to reduce it to that single aspect does everyone (not least of all Shirley!) something of a disservice. The film proves itself to be a time-travelling Transatlantic road-movie of sorts, utilising an incredibly rich audio archive to recount the tale of her seminal 1959 song-collecting trip around America’s Deep South alongside her then-lover (and legendary ethnomusicologist) Alan Lomax. The soundtrack album reflects this, combining never-before-released recordings from that trip (notably Alabama Sacred Harp Convention, Texas Gladden and Sidney Hemphill-Carter) with more recent offerings, a home recording of Shirley's sister Dolly Collins, excerpts from the original soundtrack music and two BBC session tracks from 1958, which get their first release, some 60 years after they were recorded.

Shirley Collins spent her life in song. Even during her time without her performing voice she was telling the stories of others’ music. Not once has she dropped the baton in keeping these songs, these stories, these people alive. The soundtrack to ‘The Ballad Of Shirley Collins’ - through its diversity - showcases a cross section of the facets that make up an extraordinary career by anyone’s standards.

Released for the first time on limited edition pink vinyl (worldwide) and deluxe DVD bookback (UK only) that will feature a range of extras including deleted scenes, audio commentary, behind the scenes footage and an unreleased short film by the filmmakers along with CD of the soundtrack.

By the time Tal National reached international acclaim with 2013's 'Kaani', the band's first release outside of Niger, they had spent more than a decade crisscrossing their native country, usually on dirt pathways through the Sahara, playing epic five-hour sets, seven days a week, selling their CDs on street corners and roundabouts. In the process, they became Niger's most popular band, with songs constantly blasted on national TV and cell phones everywhere. Following FatCat's release of 'Kaani', Western audiences and critics quickly embraced the band's singular and finely-honed sound. NPR were hit by "the band's tightness and fiery energy"; The Guardian praised "their full-tilt approach, and hypnotic intensity"; whilst Songlines wrote of "a rich, hybrid sound that draws on familiar West African elements to create something rewardingly fresh and different". FatCat released the dazzling follow-up, 'Zoy Zoy', on April 13th 2015, once again to great critical acclaim, with shouts from Pitchfork, Uncut, Afropop Worldwide, FADER, The Quietus and a cover feature on fRoots. With each heaping of praise, they all seemed to echo NPR’s assessment that “There’s no way you won’t dance to this one!”.

Gearing up for their third album for FatCat, Tal National look back on a fertile period spent honing their sound and touring the US several times – leaving audiences sweaty and stunned time after time. They’ve laid down incredible sets at WOMAD and Roskilde, bringing the same intensity and jubilance to the festival set as they would a crammed club, converting the staunchest wallflower into a dancer for the night. At their core, that’s Tal National's intent, to make the people dance. With new album 'Tantabara' (due Feb 2018) the band continues their ongoing quest to translate that energy to tape, bottling the party for personal use.

Niger borders Nigeria, Mali and Ghana. Collected within this former French colony can be found Songhai, Fulani, Hausa, and Tuareg populations, all of whom are represented in the membership of Tal National. As such, the nation enjoys a greatly varied mix of cultures and ethnicities, all richly steeped in music. It is no stranger to highlife, kora and afrobeat musics, while giving the world Tuareg Blues and a unique brand of hip-hop. In Tal National's music can be heard the rolling 12/8 rhythms in the Hausa's fuji percussion, the pensive aridity of the Tuareg's assouf and the exquisite griot guitar of Mali's Songhai, all delivered with virtuoso precision and unrelenting energy. After listing 'Kaani' in its top 10 albums of 2013, The New York Times wrote that "the music keeps leaping ahead with one surprise after another: guitar parts that align and diverge and reconfigure, drumming that pounces on offbeats. The patterns are crisp, complex and tireless".

Biog

It stands to reason that many vital albums come critically close to never being made. The eight-track upshot of doubt, upheaval and financial strain, Stains on Silence by Girls Names is one such release.

Following 2015’s blitzing Arms Around a Vision, and the parting of drummer Gib Cassidy just over a year later, the Belfast band suddenly found themselves facing down a looming void. “There was a finished – and then aborted – mix of the album, which was shelved for six months,” reveals Girls Names frontman Cathal Cully. “We then took a break from all music and went back to full-time work. We chilled out from the stress of rushing the record and not being happy with it, as well as being skint with no impending touring on the cards and constantly having to worry about rent.”

The stumbling blocks that proved a strain became the album’s defining breakthrough. Recorded in various locations including Belfast’s Start Together Studio with Ben McAuley, Cully’s home and the band’s practice space, spontaneous creation, cut-up techniques and self-editing took centre-stage for the first time. "We started tearing the material apart and rebuilding, re-editing and re-recording different parts in my home in early Autumn last year,” says Cully. “When we got them to a place we were happier with we went back into Start Together Studio with Ben McAuley to finalise the mixes to what they are now."

Where AAAV proved a brazen statement of intent, Stains on Silence bounds forth as its feature-length comedown. What could have seen the band buckle became an opportunity for approaching things tabula rasa. During its two-year transmutation, Cully, bassist Claire Miskimmin and guitarist Philip Quinn had a single aim for their fourth album: to make an old-fashioned record clocking in around 30 to 35 minutes in length that made the listener reach straight for repeat. From the Bang Bang bar-summoning swoon of opener '25’ and the submerged disco doom of ‘Haus Proud’ to the rapt, dub-leaning ‘Fragments of a Portrait’, Girls Names have excelled in their goal by forging an LP of synchronous nuance and defiance.

Marked by the presence of drum machines and programming throughout, these eight masterfully-woven tales are once again commandeered by founder Cully, whose words, understated yet defiant, mine purpose and meaning from the mire ("I want to bathe again, I want to swim again / In a pool of twisting bodies, blackened gold." — ‘25’). But while Stains on Silence came critically close to never being made, having lived with it, reconfigured it, and guided its metamorphosis from flickers of inspiration and half-formed schemes, it’s both a statement of pure perseverance, and a head-on confrontation with ambivalence that couldn’t be more assured. Recorded in Switzerland, in the family home of longtime friend and collaborator Misha Hering within the domesticity and gentle routine of communal life, the album represents a world as predisposed to solemn introspection as it is to blithe conviviality.
 
Ecstatic Arrow borrows from the heterogeneous terrain of The Flying Lizard’s Fourth Wall, the exuberant technology assisted pop of Yellow Magic Orchestra and the playful sophistication of Lizzy Mercier Descloux’s Press Colour, arriving at the evergreen intersection of pop music and conceptual art.
 
The resolute opener of Be Released and album centre point The Female Genius pair resonant Fourth World instrumentation with sonorous, loping drum patterns. Elsewhere, the sentimental march of single The Second Shift plays out like an after-hours ballad re-imagined by Wally Badarou and For Every Window There’s a Curtain is coloured by the blue-lit haze of an Eventide warped tenor saxophone.
 
Three albums in, the voice of Alice Merida Richards is more compelling and expressive than ever. The glacial deadpan of previous records has given way to a more candid, self-possessed delivery, showing an appreciation for the humour and tragedy innate in the downtown Arcadia of Laurie Anderson, Robert Ashley or even Lynn Goldsmith’s Will Powers.
 
It’s with this voice that Richards outlines a simple ideality that fortifies the entirety of Ecstatic Arrow - inequality pervades, destructive behaviours are inherited and each subsequent generation has to reconcile the debts of its precursor - yet a space exists within ourselves and each other that houses a fact we must be reminded of - we have the ability to choose. Even in moments of frustration; the ascerbic eye-roll toward male entitlement, Glorious Idea or the world-weary Eight Hours Don’t Make a Day, there persists a joy for living that refuses to be confined.
 
A depiction of a group finally at ease with itself, Ecstatic Arrow is a tribute to the internal momentum that quietly guides us toward our destination.

Celebrating Light In The Attic's 10 year anniversary in 2012, we are releasing a series of very special colored vinyl 7”s and digital downloads. The series features contemporary artists covering a track reissued by Light In The Attic on the A-side, plus the original version on the B-side. 

To launch the series, we asked Los Angeles-based scuzzy punks Zig Zags, whose debut 7" came out on Mexican Summer earlier this year, to team up with legendary punk rock icon Iggy Pop (yes, THAT Iggy Pop!). With this, we give you Iggy Pop and Zig Zags' take on Betty Davis' "If I'm In Luck I Might Get Picked Up" from her self-titled debut album (LITA 026).  

Digging deep into the grooves of the original, Zig Zags discovered a secret heavy Sabbath vibe lurking just below the funk surface. Mixing that with their usual sludge-punk leanings, the god-like Iggy Pop was brought in to sing. A natural choice. 

A side was recorded by Dan Horne (Beachwood Sparks), mixed by Thom Monahan (Vetiver, Pernice Bros, Devendra Banhart), and mastered by Dave Cooley (Elysian Masters). B side features the original 1973 Betty Davis recording as remastered by Dave Cooley in 2007.
