Aléx Ho Mégas - θίασος ἁπαλφιτίζω ἀναδοχή I (Thiasus Mix Series 1)

“Thyia” is an ethereal, acid-house track infused with floating breakbeats and fuzzy vintage-sounding synthesis. Pitter-pattering white noise accents the percussion, while reverb-laden claps occasionally crash across the audio spectrum. The track is a gradual crescendo that ebbs and flows like a powerful tide pulling rocks back into the sea. 

Featured predominantly in “Thyia” are the sounds of the Roland TB-303. To Ho Megas, adding a 303 to his music only makes sense since, after all, he lives in the 303 - the area code of Denver, Colorado. “I can’t say it was a conscious decision to be interested in the TB-303 while living in the 303. More it made sense to use the 303 for the sound I was trying to create,” says Ho Megas. “Then I thought, ‘Huh, why aren’t we talking about the 303 more in the 303, especially with so many 303 sounds in the 303?” 

Denver is emerging as an important city for house music - a genre of music that’s used the sounds of the TB-303 predominantly for nearly its entire history. On top of boasting globally iconic DJs week in and week out, Denver also has a local legacy that goes back to the early ‘90s. It is also the headquarters of Beatport, the popular online electronic music store. As a result of this long history, Denver now boasts hundreds of people who either DJ or produce music that features the sounds of the 303. 

He believes this is only a matter of time until Colorado becomes a globally recognized hub for local grown house music like it did for other types of electronic music. “The scene is thirsty. There are shows almost every night of the week, often with conflicts. There is also so much talent here signed to some really incredible labels,” notes Ho Megas. “Clearly, Colorado has had success fostering homegrown talent in other electronic music genres, so I think it’s only a matter of time here. For example, the bass scene is ranked behind maybe only Bristol and London in terms of prestige. Therefore, I think it’s only a matter of time until some talent from the 303 starts emerging on a global level since house music is starting to be in Denver what bass music was in 2010.”

This year marks 15 years since I started my service in the online underground. Time flies when you are having fun right?! I remember when I (as non dj) heard something on the radio back then, that was just it. Nobody put that on soundcloud or youtube for you to listen to again. I was telling myself there must be more people that want to listen to some tracks over and over again. That's how it all started. Ripping tracks from radio shows, uploading some cool tracks that were hot in that time period (remember post-dubstep & future garage?),there were even a few people sending me their music to upload! The moment I started doing the video edits was life changing. Not only for me but for all the people we (music youtubers) made hot in the era of lo-fi house. Happy to see some of them rockin big stages today!

Since then, this has been my everyday, 24/7/365! Paid my dues & made the sacrifices. Was it worth it? Damn right! Though I have to admit that I never intended to start djing myself. I was forced to by the community! I am happy I sold my bike so I can buy speakers and started.

Music took me around the world. With music I met a bunch of amazing people who did not hesitate to spend their money and time just to meet the guy they know from youtube. For this I will forever be grateful!

Like 5 years ago, also this time I have a mix for you! I just wanted to put together a mix full of my all time favorite jams. The result is an almost six hour journey through different genres & styles. I also wanted to include music made by people I have some history with. Baltra, Bambounou, Fjaak, Route 8 or Kettama, to name a few (and a whole lotta more!). Expect a lot of hits! Slow jams, House, Techno, UK sound and more.

Mr. Frick Live Opening Set For Avalon Emerson @ 1134 Broadway, Denver

This is my submission to the Re/Form Spring 2024 DJ Competition. I have been wanting to head out to LA to experience the parties out there for some time. When I saw the first round of this lineup announced, I immediately set out to make arrangments to go. While I have not yet been to LA for an event, the city has garnered a reputation of having one of the strongest and most forward thinking underground electronic music scenes in the US. Whether they are exhibiting artists with legendary status spanning several decades, US debuts of emerging international artists, or offering a shot at the decks to a promising local or regional DJ, the responses to their parties appear to be never short of highly revered. As such, it would be overwhelming honor and privilege to be included among the ranks of the artists booked by Dirty Epic, 6AM, and Synthetik Minds. 

Some of the artists on this lineup have been incredibly influential to me and their tracks make their way into my DJ sets on a regular basis, so this one is particularly special to me. I will be there either way, but I hope you'll support me by listening and sharing thoughts to this mix which was inspired by this party.

As a submission for a chance at an opening slot, I wanted this mix to showcase some of the deeper and more hypnotic areas of modern, futuristic techno. While it certainly listens with a considerable amount of cerebral depth, I was sure to still infuse a healthy dose of driving energy and groovy rhythm and my typical incorporation of the occasional broken beat.
