The In Search of Sanctuary EP is reflective of my mind during the first few months of the pandemic. Being boxed up in my room, not being able to go out on walks and enjoy the things which normally keep me sane was really getting to me. So I wrote these tunes kind of describing what was going on internally. The tracks Before the Dawn and Sundown Sky focus on wanting to have the sense of awe I get from seeing sunrises and sunsets. Forests Edge centres around that feeling you get when you go out walking, that sense of peace from seeing awe-inspiring views, which I couldn’t really do because I was part of the extremely vulnerable group.
Digital Life stands apart from the tracks, in that it’s really about the time when I started to realise being on my computer was making the whole boxed-in feeling worse. So that track’s a little less dreamy and restful and a bit more harsh and agitated. During that time I started sitting down and listening to a vinyl each day, trying to get away from digital social media and all that, so that’s why it sounds a bit more analogue and wobbly. The French Horn solo in the middle is kind of like things gradually feeling less artificial again.
Working with Fearbace on Forests Edge was also a blast, and I’m super excited about more work we’ve got in the pipeline that we’ll announce on a future date.
