We are happy to present Groove & Flavor Premium Podcast #004, this time a live set by Berlin based DJ/Producer Birdsmakingmachine.

Birdsmakingmachine is a collective of wandering artists interested in music, design and off course, birds.

Back in the second year of the no time era, in an old distant continent, after long and dangerous journeys on their own, a few wandering artists met in a deserted pub in the dullest walled city ever imagined. They spent one thousand and one nights drinking and talking and they heard no sound. The city was in complete silence, except for the distant noise of the factories where all the people in town gathered and spent their days and nights.

The idea of a life between walls, surrounded by machine noise was a burden for them.

They agreed it was not a coincidence their meeting there. They felt deep inside the desire to stay. They knew they were up to a big revolution. Freedom was about to come. It was time to break the silence.

After some deliberation, they came up with an idea.

Each of them had a special talent, some sacred tools they used to develop a never before seen machine. They spend a long second immersed in the process until they finally built a machine capable of making birds…

The joy of the gypsies, the wonder of the forest, the craziness of the south and the nonsense of the world were now making sense and sounds.

The birdsmakingmachine started to free musical birds that spread the language of the soul in the winds. The birds flew away in the distance and their singing never stopped.

Katharine's style is funky, minimal, and driving, with a friendly dose of psychedelia. I originally made it for the Romanian Podcast Series ART E.  The series was curated by Sabina Muller who had gathered a great collection of artists. 

It had lots of hearts which made me feel pretty loved up x

He's responsible for numerous gems on labels such as the prestigious 'R&S Records', Maher Daniel's 'The Other Side', UVAR and his own 'Ada Kaleh România'. This mix arrives straight from one of the most interesting realities in the European panorama: the Folkor club. Sublime sounds and hypnotic grooves stimulate her being, compelling her to source and mix, creating a micro, minimal, soul-stirring experience she calls astral:house. Those who crave nourishing sonic sessions have followed Katharine’s journey along the Australian East Coast alongside her musical partner Ben Abrahams for over two decades as they’ve influenced the scene with their exciting taste & consistent delivery of stimulating underground house & techno, both in clubs & outdoors. 

Together they created ‘Strange Brew’, an all ages acid-house vinyl party at the Billinudgel Pub, Byron Bay, at which time the infamous 'Shed' was built;  revelling in the Outback for sunset was deliciously surreal, dancing to stripped back house grooves amongst the gum trees. 

They ran eight extremely memorable years of Saturday nights at Elsewhere Bar on the Gold Coast. Katharine played psychedelic house before Ben's killer 5 hour sets, then both joined together for the heaving sweaty early morning hours.  Elsewhere won Best Music for a Club in Australia at the Sydney Bar Music Awards at that time. All vinyl back then.

Katharine had the first of her two children before returning to Melbourne and putting on high-vibe parties at the infamous Killing Time Bar & My Aeon,  always with a tight crew of Australia’s best underground djs.  

Katharine made mixes for Art-E Romania and the Microtechno Podcast series 9 years ago, having long been recognised for her way with intricate sounds, particularly with lovers of micro-house & the Romanian influenced minimal.  She appreciates music which alludes to the transcendent - both gently & powerfully.  As an undeniably charged up being she just keeps on lovingly creating fresh soundtracks for her friends’ lives. Last year she made 21 mixes for amazing collectives around the world, including Half is Enough Romania's Strangers in the Night: each session is an experience. 

Her unique way elevates and deeply satisfies at both sunset & sunrise, and she has played magical closing sets out in the forest, most recently for the Comfort Zone crew on their final day on the main stage by the creek.
