Now we have our music label Motion:Theory:Music, putting local artists like Jules David on the international stage, with remixes by Vincent Casanova.  After years of residencies and passionate mix curation, now we can support our artist friends through our label too!  Known for our podcasts in many countries: 'This is How We Do It' the original name for this mix, has a couple of thousand plays and much love.

It was actually freezing cold winter - and my hands could barely move to mix... but it was an amazing experience - full dancefloor.

Playing at the Comfort Zone festival at Comfort Creek was fantastic.  There was an amazingly loved up relaxed crowd, & the the sun had just come out for the first time in 3 days.

The set time was 1-2:30 so I made sure I set a vibe for the afternoon and evening with a concoction of twisted disco, euphoria & minimal lusciousness.   Playing on the third day of a festival is a lot of fun...

Thankyou Comfort Zone crew for appreciating my take on minimal & modern house.

Quite a few people have asked me for this set, & several of the tracks sparked attention, so here you are! I didn't have a recorder, so from my pre & post-set scribbles I mixed it again jumping around at home with my children.  It was a fun experience to relive (understatement.)

Katharine - *DiMEnSiOnS - Motion:Theory:Music - a deep lush vibe...

This session was retrospective at the time that I mixed it, a living room session from 2014 - of music we used to play on the Australian East Coast in the 2000s. 

Here's the story:

I was at home one afternoon 2014. I'd had my first baby, and while I'd been mixing some very fresh minimal using Traktor timecode vinyl, I had not mixed from my record bags for a few years. It felt really good to flip through our favourite records once again. This is a collection of just a few of our most special tracks from our early Motion:Theory:Music years - primarily at our 8 year Saturday night residency at Elsewhere on the Gold Coast from the early 2000s, a night which we started as the club opened - created by the incredible Simmy and Benny.  

The club won 'Best Music for a Club in Australia' at the Sydney Bar Music Awards during our time there when Ben was Musical Director, alongside residents Giv & Audun. We were told our deep underground vibes could not work on the coast, but we remained true to the sound and never played 'down' to the audience, instead bringing an integrity to their flashing dancefloor.

I speak of Ben Abrahams, my musical partner, and father of our 2 boys.  He is one of Australia's early East Coast djs, & is much respected among djs & punters; he coined the phrase 'blurring the line between house & techno'.  Around 2000, he became resident of the infamous outdoor party Earthcore, bringing clubby sounds to the forest ravers, primarily used to trance music.  He had a Saturday night and Sunday night residency at Onesixone that went off' all in the days before social media.  

Most of these tracks we have danced to SOOO many times from 1998 through to 2009, so they effect my body memory intensely. Such memories of epic nights dancing for hours and hours and hours with all my friends; we had such authentic connections, so regularly, and then our intimate group moved onto our house to continue djing all of Sunday. I feel so lucky to have experienced that time. The bongos, the dubby basslines, the clubby vibes, the few super scratchy records, all make me get tingly and emotional.  I used to call the tracks I was drawn to play 'sideways house'.   

Ben played 5 hour vinyl sets every Saturday night for this extended period, and his mastery is well known.  Some of these are Ben's records, but became the basis for my set: stored in my record box. Ben is so clever at combining the best of the old with the new, & our appreciation of music is at the core of our connection, as it is with all our friends, old & new.

Opening a party& setting the vibe is always an honour.  I was rather glad to bring minimal house to this crew!  I started with our friend Timmus' amazing new piece which felt just perfect, then moved through an hour of fresh new dancefloor minimal with a couple of West Coast classics which I ripped from special 16 year old records. 
This is a short fast mix for me, not as deep or heavy as I usually go....picture the Paladium - a huge club in Melbourne - first set before about 12 hrs of friends!



Even if the dancefloor was just starting, I was playing most deliberately for the MelBURNers as they did their last minute setup, & those keenly arriving on time.  

The stage setup was tremendous & the lighting spectacular!!

Those who crave nourishing sonic sessions have followed Katharine’s journey along the Australian East Coast alongside her musical partner Ben Abrahams for over two decades as they’ve influenced the scene with their exciting taste & consistent delivery of stimulating underground house & techno, in clubs & outdoors. Known for 'that sound', they uncompromisingly brought West Coast house to the Australian underground scene.

Together they created ‘Strange Brew’, an all ages acid-house vinyl party at the Billinudgel Pub, Byron Bay, & for their first gatherings there, the infamous 'Shed' was built;  revelling in the Outback for sunset was deliciously surreal, dancing to stripped back house grooves amongst the gum trees. 

They ran eight extremely memorable years of Saturday nights at Elsewhere Bar on the Gold Coast. Katharine played psychedelic house before Ben's killer 5 hour sets, then both joined together for the heaving sweaty early morning hours.  Elsewhere won Best Music for a Club in Australia at the Sydney Bar Music Awards at that time. All vinyl back then.

Katharine had the first of her two children before returning to Melbourne and putting on high-vibe parties at the infamous Killing Time Bar & My Aeon,  always with a tight crew of Australia’s best underground djs.  

Katharine made mixes for Art-E Romania and the Microtechno Podcast series 10 years ago, having long been recognised for her way with intricate sounds, particularly with Romanian collectives and lovers of micro-house &  minimal.  She appreciates music which alludes to the transcendent - both gently & powerfully.  As an undeniably charged up being she just keeps on lovingly creating fresh soundtracks for her friends’ lives. Last year she made 21 mixes for amazing collectives around the world, including Half is Enough Romania's Strangers in the Night: each session is an experience. 

Her unique way elevates and deeply satisfies at both sunset & sunrise, and she has played magical closing sets out in the forest, most recently for the Comfort Zone crew on their final day on the main stage by the creek.
