I find it very interesting to observe the range of different productions that fly under the banner of Dubtechno these days...

And although I like many of these variations, from the more ambient and chord-focused interpretations to the dry, atonal and polyrhythmic percussively  focused productions, I've been getting a sense lately that something is a little wrong. By this I mean since a certain point there has been a development towards a generic sound and format that somehow seems very superficial bringing the same flat and trivial sounds thrown together and promoted as  "Dubtechno"  and to me, often it seems like fast food compared to the original models. There is even  talk of a new wave. Both the production and the way it is presented seem somehow cheap, random and arbitrary to me. Often it is difficult if not impossible to avoid being interwined with these developments if you are enthusiastic about the often amorphous genre that is now labeled Dubtechno. 

Don't get me wrong I am not saying that there is no place for this "new sound" but the more I reflect on my enthusiasm - from my first exposure to dub and its techno hybrids, through rhythm & sound and through sound system culture in the late 90s to my renewed immersion in recent years, I realize that I should use the terms Dub and Dubtechno more and more carefully - coming from a place of a certain respect and appreciation. Because often these genres, carry a lot of cultural heritage, standing for a level of quality in delivery that in reality is hard to develop, and often lost to the disposable imitation economy we are beginning to see more and more of, which only serves to dilute things to an accepted average.

To me a big slice of what is promoted as Dub or Dubtechno these days falls well short of these original benchmarks that were set a long time ago. 

Through many conversations about these topics, reflecting on different perspectives, a mix was created recently where two fellows, I can call my friends, and I combined 3 sequential sets of 7 tracks each, to rest with and pay a little respect to some of the more remote but still relatable facets of dub in different ways. It's completely natural for styles to evolve and mix. It's great  to see with how much creativity and depth some artists do this.  And that's what this mix should stand for.

Our second journey into the frontier is curated and mixed by legendary artist and head of one of the most celebrated Dub Techno labels on the planet - Kenneth Christiansen.

Kenneth has been djing all over Europe the last 2 decades, playing clubs like Fabric, Berghain, Tresor,  and at Festivals like Sonar, ADE & Dimension. Running the 3 labels Echocord, Echocord Colour, Echo Echo and Pattern Repeat with Resoe. 

A true Pillar of the Dub Techno Scene, someone who has been pushing the boundaries of the genre through his label and his DJ sets for many years. It's an honour to have Kenneth showcase his sound for us.

Artist: Alastair Kelly [Lempuyang]

Our third Frontier mix comes from Uk Based Lempuyang Record Label boss Alastair Kelly. Since the labels beginnings in 2021 it has been at the absolute forefront of the Dub Techno world. Having put out an incredible 25 releases across both Lempuyang and its sub label - Sanghyang Dedari, its fair to say Alastair has positioned Lempuyang as arguably one of, if not, the premier dub techno label in the world.

Alastair has however been a music head / record collector for much longer. The mans musical knowledge is as deep as the sounds he plays. When you look across his personal musical output it's very obvious that he doesnt like to be pigeon-holed. Sometimes his mixes are pure dub techno, sometimes as he put it himself - "There's not a dub in sight". 

Deep House, Tech-House, Detroit Techno/house can all be found within his mixes. What ties them all together is the quality of the records he selects and how he weaves them together. 

For this particular mix Alastair has gone down a Rhythm&Sound vibe with no less than 7 R&S tracks featured, as well as music from Steve O'Sullivan under his Bluetrain Alias, as well as records from Mike Schommer and Ezeph. 

We're privileged to have such a pure music head contribute to this series and excited to see what is to come from Lempuyang.... Whatever it is we know it'll be of the highest standard.

Jenny Arredondo is a true Techno enthusiast. A music and dance-floor lover. A crazy healthy raver that would dance for hours and hours to proper Techno beats and bass. She is known as the "Dancing Queen" in the underground NYC Techno scene and around the world. Her passion for music has no limits; she has music in her blood.
 Jenny's music exploration journey began in 2012, and she plays and produces Deep Techno, Ambient and Electronica under the names "Headliner" and "La Guru". Her album "Techno Inquisition" was released on November 16th 2013 and her second album “Ubiquitous” was released on December 28th 2014. Her release "Dark Invader" was included in the compilation REGENERATION by the Spanish label Doppt Zykkler//Series on June 15th, 2015. Her track Headliner - Planck Epoch was included in the (DE19) Deep Diversity Vol. 3 - Deep Electronics Compilation released on November 5th, 2015. Her first EP "Rose Red Wounds" was released on July 16th 2021 also on the dutch label Deep Electronics. Her latest release "A New Hope" was a contribution to the Mastoid Kollektive - PINK in support of breast cancer and was featured along other tracks by amazing techno and house legends.
 She organized underground techno events in New York for almost a decade and also hosted events in Detroit, Mexico City, Barcelona, Amsterdam and Playa del Carmen. In 2015, Headliner also became part of Female Pressure, an international network of female artists in electronic music and digital arts founded by Electric Indigo. You will often find her listening and discovering new tracks and artists, also at Techno events having the time of her life.
