Berlin Boombox Mixtape #34 - ESTIMULO

As the owner of Dark Entries, one of the most prolific reissue labels around, Josh Cheon has cemented himself as one of the world’s most knowledgeable experts of italo disco, industrial, post-punk and oddball early electronics. The San Francisco resident is also a key member of Honey Soundsystem, the label and party who celebrates the true roots of disco and house, without resorting to pastiche or imitation.
We spoke to Cheon about where his unconventional tastes emerged from, life in San Francisco and what we can look forward to from Dark Entries in 2017. He's also put together an 80 minute, vinyl-only mix of some wonderfully outlandish music.

A lovely little piano number (can we call it Balearic!?) from Ed Mahon called "A Brighter Day"!! This track is part of the Sprechen release "Edgy Future Discotheque Vol 2" and is out on 10th June!

There's sun seeking balearic goodness from Cowbell Radio host Ed Mahon with the beautiful ‘A Brighter Day’. Ivan Fabre drops an 80's neo-disco not disco chugger on ‘Incursions’, Indigo Jung serves up a jacking soulful house number on ‘For Real’. Solid State goes for peak time heads down goodness on ‘Tonite’.  DJ Steevo goes right in for some straight up dance floor on ‘Heroes Funk’. Oh and there's also some amazing & unique UK Garage style shenanigans from Norway by way of Trudee Note and 'Dreams of Revenge’.

We're super chuffed to have the legendary Sean Johnston on Gouranga for the first time!

A Mountain Of Rimowa is Sean Johnston of A Love From Outer Space and Hardway Bros. Johnston uses the AMOR alias to explore how his varied influences can be wrought into new shapes: mining the past for a path to the future. No More takes the optimism of an 80’s soul staple and reimagines it as a robotic Italo disco anthem. His Sisters and Brothers in the East takes cues from EBM and New Beat but bends them into contemporary forms. Conversely His Sisters and Brothers in the West is a reconstruction of the same material viewed through the lens of 90’s house heads such as Clivilles and Cole - a Music factory for the 21st Century. Joker takes inspiration from early 90’s ambient dub and repurposes it as an early morning work out in the cosmic hole. In line with The EP’s NYC house influence, New York heroes Justin Strauss and Max Pask are invited to remix No More, delivering a tough piano house reading which will work the floor and raise hands.

The Hivern split series was born as a platform for club-ready tracks that don’t require a broader sonic context to express themselves. It’s also as a way of generating an unplanned dialogue between artists in the label’s orbit, connecting the dots amid them in spontaneous and almost unconscious ways. The third instalment of the series brings together Beesmunt Soundsystem and Cooper Saver. Their two tracks share a similar approach, deconstructing ethereal sounds over dark rhythmic foundations to reach the same kind of narcotic transcendence.
