Feed Your Head Guest Mix: John Paynter

Wandering through the twilight, he looked up at the moon so very far away and wondered what it might be like to soar. He had always dreamt of careering through the clouds, beyond into the darkness so as to escape from the chaos and strife of the world down here below. It would be ever so magic.

He wondered what others would think of his wild, reckless fantasies. What would they think of his strange longing to leave it all behind? Would they think he was crazy or bewildered...

In the distance he saw a flyer framed in a shop window. It was illuminated by a faint, flickering glow.

'Are you psychic?' is what it read.

Michal Turtle is an esteemed and well renowned figure in leftfield, experimental music having been releasing material for some 40 odd years. Now Invisible Inc. have the privilege of releasing a record titled 'Same Songs, Different Room'. A record comprised of material reimagined and remastered, from the ground up. New versions of much loved classics and forgotten gems.

PREMIERE: Michal Turtle - Are You Psychic? [Invisible Inc]

One of the great things about running a guest mix series is that you get to meet incredibly talented artists. Even in very remote places (from this part of the world). So it was while listening to this mix that I realized I had found my soulmate 11,000km away from here.

Skeletale is a DJ based in Jakarta, Indonesia. Heavily inspired by the camp and excess of the 1980s, she has grown to develop her sound as a DJ with a curation of tracks that transcend time: from Italo Disco, Synth Pop, and HI-NRG to EBM and New Beat. She has a special affinity for shimmering synths, driving basslines and prepossessing vocals.

In 2022 she co-founded Club Vixxxen, a genre-bending club night showcasing queer and femme talents, where dressing up is encouraged and self-expression is mandatory.  With 11,000km separating us, I really hope that one day we'll be standing side by side behind the DJ booth.

Every now and then you cross paths with a great person on a dance floor and end up chatting for ages over your shared tastes in music. That's exactly how we met Ryan, pretty much a couple of years ago to the day.

We hadn't really kept in touch until our paths crossed again in a similar way a few months ago at a Dresden night, and while catching up we invited him to put together this mix for us - trusting in his good tastes and keen ear for outsider music, mostly in the realms of the slow and leftfield.

So brings edition 24 of our series, an hour and a half journey exploring cosmic downtempo rhythms.
