Edson P Marques C, AKA Shaka Guru, is a DJ, Record Producer, Songwriter and Sound Engineer. He was born in Uzorgu, Santiago Island, in Cape Verde Islands. From an early age, his passion for music was evident. Growing up, his family did not own a TV; their only source of entertainment was a simple Radio cassette device owned by his grandfather. It was his all-day long entertainment hub; so many record melodies from all over the world would be played at the time. These songs deeply touched his soul.  He reminisces of a day when the radio cassette that he held dearly broke down. Out of curiosity, he opened it up and got it back to blasting tunes.   

Back in primary school, Shaka Guru teamed up with a friend from his class to form a Rap duo. They performed at school and local events. He was also part of a dance group that performed on similar platforms. It was when he moved to Somada for his secondary education that he familiarised himself with a few musical instruments. With the help of his friends and tutors, he learned how to play the guitar. Even though his area of study was Civil Construction, his love for the arts kept growing. His interests ranged from architecture to paintings, drawings, poetry, music and deejaying. He also discovered an appreciation for culture and nature that he still carries on to this day. 

After completing secondary school, he moved to London to further his studies. The plan was to pursue Architecture, but this changed when he arrived and switched to Music Production and Sound Engineering. The program gave him in-depth skills in deejaying and the music business in general. Leaving home for a foreign, far off country had its fair share of challenges, particularly being separated from family. The language barrier did not make it any easier. Shaka Guru held strong amidst the tough times because music kept him going. He compared deejaying to a garden full of coloured flowers and beautiful melodies.  The pain he experienced led him to walk into this garden that he referred to as “express my feelings”.

He perceives deejaying as more than just playing music. “Being a DJ is not just playing music, it’s sharing good energy, feelings and happiness,” he says. The multifaceted DJ runs a Record label called Sakuta Music from which he releases his projects. Shaka Guru has taken the time to shape and master his craft to deliver his vision. He has been working on numerous projects, both his and with other artists. His music introduces a unique flavour of African roots, melody, happiness, feelings, positive energy, love, affection, nature, colours, paintings and architecture.
