Bucharest duo Karpov Not Kasparov debut on Disco Halal with new single ‘Memory’, out 21st May.

Underpinned by a haunting synth-line and hypnotic vocals, ‘Memory’ is a psychedelia-laced leftfield pop jam that pairs Eastern influences with an infectious dancefloor sensibility. The release also features an remix from Crosstown Rebels head honcho and certified dancefloor alchemist Damian Lazarus, who delivers a chugging, acid-tinged take on his ‘Re-Shape’. Both versions of ‘Memory’ will feature on Karpov Not Kasparov’s forthcoming five-track EP of the same name, out 18th June.

Valeriu Borcos and Eduard Gabia aka Karpov not Kasparov describe what they do as ‘a musical game of chess between synthesizer and drums’. As well as releasing music on the likes of Fleeting Wax, Karakter Records and Local Records, the Romanian duo also incorporate an analogue visual artist and contemporary dancers into their live performances, resulting in a theatrical show and a kind of real-time soundtrack to the action around them.

Encompassing elements of downtempo, new-wave and alternative pop, stitched together with a leftfield dancefloor throb, the Disco Halal back-catalogue, filled with efforts from the likes of Polocorp, Budakid and Moscoman himself, has seen the imprint rapidly emerging from the once-overlooked nightlife and club scene of Tel Aviv into the worldwide spectrum.
 
‘Memory’ sees Disco Halal explore a fresh avenue while simultaneously staying true to the label’s ethos and trademark sound.

My Time Is Mine

Situated on the Rhine, midway between Dusseldorf and Cologne in western Germany, Luc Angenehm, has witnessed a prodigious rise to prominence from his home in Langenfeld. Fuelled by talent, passion and academic prowess, these attributes now coalesce together in the first of two original EPs for Proton Music as "Kaiserkraft" hits the Proton Music headlines.

With his parents to thank for the value they saw in musicianship, Angenehm's decade long study of the piano gave him a clear and enviable advantage in the world of music production. Further introduced to a "wide range of contemporary house music" by his elder sister, sibling curation saw Luc inspired by the dance music universe with a desire to go beyond a role as passive consumer. Investment in electronic music equipment and 'tools of the trade' led, in turn, to studies in professional production at the "VibrA" Modern Music School in nearby Cologne.

An impressive production career followed and 2013's debut for Slaap Records opened the door into a world of possibilities for the Luc Angenehm sound. An amalgamation of "progressive, minimal, deep and tech house" genres have thus shaped a style as Solid Shape, Subjekt and Traum became connected to the German producer's work. With impressive regularity, multiple original tracks and EPs have found their way onto the catalogues of the finest modern imprints, supplemented by a high-calibre collection of remix material.

An outstanding remix of Kobana's "Freefall" represents Luc Angenehm's sole contribution to the Proton Music catalogues thus far and so it is with anticipation and excitement that we announce the release of the twin-track "Kaiserkraft" EP.

The title track itself is a beautifully crafted work with Luc's sculpted beats and mesmerising, enveloping bass pattern. Soft melodic sequences permeate listener consciousness as they pitch and roll in emotive reverie. Pulsing pads and organ sounds bring a rich distinctive character to proceedings through melancholy chord progressions to create a work that is highly skilful in its stripped back execution.

Partner track "Sendher" continues the stripped back techno themes of its predecessor as a hypnotic percussion section creates a relaxed aura. Cleverly sequenced, melodic patterns revel in delayed and stepped glory as the sound of Stephan Bodzin and Henry Saiz converge in Angenehm's unique sonic architecture. An eerie pitched down vocal treatment adds further texture to a work that bristles with innovation and technical know-how.

A modern day 'kaiser' in the world underground dance music, Luc Angenehm's 'kraft' is a joy to behold.

Caly Jandro, a young upcoming Melbourne based Producer/DJ and founder of the Boogie Beats Collective has brought us something special for his debut. A disco-esque cut, with organic drums and layered jungle sounds featuring a beautiful North African style vocal which really brings the track to life. Caly adds that “once the bulk of the track was done, my friend Steve wholesome.”
On the flip side label members, The Drunken Apaches (one half Out of Sorts & Cyril Orson our designer) take you on a hypnotic rendition. A subtle 303 riff under the mix, with haunting strings, clanking chords and pitched down vocal samples pull this edit together.

Two orange suns burn deep, in a dark starless abyss. They slow dance with one another, soft steady movements in calm controlled unison.
These two suns share the same beat and meet the end of all paths. When Rokia blinks her eyes the two orange suns become hidden beneath folds of darkness, leaving a starless abyss with out light, always only for a short second. Depending on the angle of this black shadow, curves in the darkness are illuminated in motion. Rokia’s shoulder blade cuts a slice of light on its edge as she prowls. Her back trickles with shining droplets as she stretches. Eyes close and suns vanish as she yawns, the darkness unfolding to reveal her large teeth and soft pink tongue. A panther is her favourite form to take. 
She appreciates the privacy of blending in with shadows, which are plenty in this thick African jungle. She waits...
She is always waiting, this time for lost travellers unaware of their misleading intuition. An abundance of wisdom may not be immune to impatiencehowever, and in this moment she decides to hurry what she waiting for.Toward a still lake, she crawls out of the darkness, smoothly emerging from the shadows. As her panther body takes new form, the orange suns rise and set in the black human face of Rokia’s beauty. She is a mother of earth and the queen of her jungle. As all that lives is connected, so is her spirit in all that lives.This naked image of strength and fertility stands on the waters edge as she peers into the still lake.Her burning sun colored eyes illuminate as she observes what is reflected in the water. She see’s a dusty troupe of cowboys riding through a western storm as a sun sets and red full moon rises. Rokia exhales a deep breathe into her closed hand which starts to glow. As she reaches down toward the water, flickering flames dance on the palm of her hand, which she places on the wild west horizon, beckoning the troupe toward her. As if a pebble had dropped into the water, a miraculous ripple expands from the image, revealing a new reflection in the glowing orange eyes of this jungle queen. A shaman monk sits in meditation upon a
water vessel that is floating down the Mekong river of Thailand in his search for the Angel’s Trumpet. Rokia pats the water of the lake she watches him through which guides the boat to where it needs to be. She does not do this selflessly; the intention behind Rokia’s action is always to do with her
own agenda. The Shaman Monk must fulfill his duty for him to find her, and so she assists with his achievement.
Once again a ripple expands from this vision in the water and a new reflection is revealed. A lonely drifter walks aimlessly through the dusty troupe’s western world. He has been stuck in this place for a long time, taking every wrong turn that comes his way. Rokia extends a long lock of her hair and bites into it, cutting it from her head. Her fiery eyes glow again as she whispers to her hair which begins to twist and wrap around her arm, transforming into a rattle snake. She winks at the snake as she reaches into the still water to place it ahead of the drifter, before blowing into the reflection to create a gust of wind that steals his hat and drops it on top of the snake ahead of him. Rokia’s spirit lives in this snake which she will use to guide this drifter toward her, along with the others...

Heimlich Musik’s tenth release is a direct output of Tulioxi developing his new live show: using a broad range of analogue equipment, the four original mixes of „The Downside of Being an Asshole“ EP represent the final result of a constant process of change taking place during many performances played live. While the title track mirrors the somber mood of its name, maestro Curses picks up the „The Downside of Being an Asshole“ in his very unique style and pushes this special kind of mood to the max. „To End up in Dark Mali“ is a modern version of Dark Wave with a recognizable lead synth shaping the tracks’ character. Collaborating between Berlin and Vienna, Local Suicide and Circle Scope strip down the original while adding acid sequences to create a massive dancefloor banger. Tulioxi tells „The Story of Three Sequencers“ using disharmonic synths added to pulsating basslines and drum patterns dominated by powerful claps. The additional remix by Undo makes the bassline the center of attention while adding spheric arpeggios for a rather spacey experience. „Tremal Naik Dance“ is rounding up the EP as a whole with floating pads and dominant arpeggios as a perfect soundtrack for a night drive in the 80s. With „The Downside of Being an Asshole“ the Heimlich journey continues with a powerful EP that can be experienced the best way by visiting one of Tulioxis’s advanced live shows.

Robin Schellenberg’s productions oscillate between a soft dystopian void full of sweeping build up’s, that drift endlessly into an infinite sky, twisting from a warm unisono into harsher electronics, to break down into perfectly saturated beats, that house themselves in the mid-tempo field, referencing minimal grooves from contemporary downbeat productions. Even if we are not talking about dark techno here, Robin loves its aesthetic and manages to translate them into his music, without drifting into cold industrial repetition – it’s more a deep yearning for the horizon, pulling the dancer forward with soft melancholy. In this remix he turns the downtempoish „Still“ from Panik Pop into a dancefloor, peaktime banger.
