'A few months back, while crate-digging at the record shop, I unearthed an 80s gem: Boytronic - You. Inspired by its vibe, I decided to craft a fresh edit, aiming to honor the track while getting closer to my own sound. After years of exploring different styles and genres, I found myself gravitating towards the allure of "B-sides", dark disco, and driving basslines. After an impressive string of releases on Sinchi, NEIN, Mélopée, Weirdos among others, Munich-based vagabond Alemao drops his luggage for the first time on HIFI/LOFI, with an EP highlighting the variety of his skills and influences, ranging between psychedelic and heady Deep Indie Dance to overdriven Techno-Disco synth escapades, and beautifully closed by a remix from the master of cosmic explorations, el grande Rigopolar.

Having lived in Berlin, Paris, Hamburg & Barcelona among other cities, Alemao has been soaking up music in Europe’s most renowned house & techno clubs for more than a decade. He started gracing the face of the world with vibrating air molecules in Dublin in 2016 where he has not only earned his nickname ‘Alemao’ but also played regularly at Pygmalion, sharing bills with the likes of Âme, Jennifer Cardini or The Drifter.

Written & produced shortly after his daughter saw the light of day, the collection of tunes opens with Akyre, where Alemao takes us in a rather dark and stomping Italo territory, accompanied by a haunting voice (which is actually one of the most used vocal samples in history, but we’ll leave the mystery hanging there). 

On Spatzi, Alemao unfolds a headier side of his sound, where dizzying synth sequences flirt with overdriven guitar-like synths, before closing the round of originals with the eponymous ‘Paranoid Disco Dub’ - as the name suggests, a more experimental cut with references to Deep Dub-Techno & Psychedelia, where one could easily get lost dancing together with his own mind in the deep shadows of a dark and sweaty club.

Last but not least, Rigopolar also makes his first appearance on HIFI/LOFI by delivering a sublime and very filmic revision of Akyre, which makes us want to ask the universe if we could please have a combined sequel of Drive and Stranger Things coming out soon itohave his remix landing on the ending credits, someone please make it happen.

King of Kings EP is a reminiscence of a period (1980 - 1991), prior to the economic liberalization of India. A closed economy with nearly 200% tariffs or outright bans on all foreign electronic equipment’s including synthesizers, sequencers, drum machines and computers due to west’s antagonizing behavior towards India for not opening its market for foreign colonial corporate actors.

This did not deter musicians to get their hands on the machines despite all the stumbling blocks placed in front of them. Defiance and persistence gave birth to Indian acid and electro synth pop created under our own terms becoming not only father of the machines once we couldn’t own but with our playful ragas giving birth to genres such as acid house.

India thus opened another node in the global cultural flows of electronic music. Cumulatively, this period contributed to the triumph of import substitution in cultural production. An attitude was born to why import when we can make it on our own. A major shift in a mind colonised and slaved for 400 yrs.

This an honest attempt to show the world, how Indian musicians undeterred by barriers made their own mark with western synthesizers and drum machines while staying true to their ethnic identity. A period of Computer Love.

“King of Kings” which translates literally from Tamil (Rajadhi Raja) is a true endeavor to demonstrate to the world how Indian musicians have overcome racial and political boundaries to achieve their sonic mission of expressing our artistic autonomy filled with purpose, perseverance and avant-garde excitement. A musical piece that aims to represent the idea, “In order to become who you are, you need to first overcome who it is they said you are”. A true King of Kings.

On the radio, on streaming platforms or on the festival stages: the song was present everywhere! A remix EP was just a formality and is now celebrating its awakening, digitally and on vinyl! Included are the Norwegian disco masters PRINS THOMAS and OST&KJEX, as well as the Mexican MIJO, the Argentinian ANA HELDER and from Berlin: AMOUNT. There is also a new acid variant from ACUD itself, as well as the original. Reason enough to fill existing gaps in the vinyl case.
