This Mixtape is a compilation of tracks produced by the participates of the 'Take it from the bird - creating music inspired by the Superb Lyrebird' workshop I lead for Unthinking / Unlearning - an online laboratory and residency, a part of the Year of Germany in Russia 2020/21 and collaboration between Klammklang label, Sound Studies and Sonic Arts (M.A.) at the Universität der Künste Berlin and Sound Art and Sound Studies (M.A.) at HSE Art and Design School, Moscow.

‘The Superb Lyrebird’ is an Australian Native bird, which is capable of mimicking natural and synthetic sounds from its natural environment — Participants created their own music sampling biorhythms and timbres from an animal sound open-access archive.

An experiment with recording compost at Prinzessinnengärten Moritz platz prinzessinnengarten-kreuzberg.net/
Recorded with a C-Series pro contact microphone made by Jez Riley French. The microphone is picking up the vibration and movement in the compost, insects moving in the compost, the underground train running under the site and since the volume was so high also birds and me talking to a student.

Bird sounds in Close-up vs monster stickers

Christina Ertl-Shirley (c.e.s.) vs. Felicity Mangan, (Plants and Animals) brings together both artists personal investigation into the sound phenomena produced by plants and animals - through the combination of c.e.s. submerged sonification of plant biochemistry, deploying self-built synthesizers, to capture and sonify of the chemical composition of plants. Mangan explores the timbre and forms of found and self-recorded animal voices while mimicking biophonic patterns to create minimal quasi-bioacoustic environments, utilizing a sampler and sequencer. Together they create electro-acoustic compositions grafting field recordings, live and pre-recorded drones and pulses produced by remnants of plant biochemistry subterranean together with modified animal voices embedded in a bioacoustic sphere of synthetic and oscillating hybrids.

Trophic Verses is an artistic exploration into the life and phenomena in and around of Earth's body of soil. The project spans a period of nearly four years and has commenced in summer 2018. Each year the project manifests in different kinds of artistic and curatorial practices, and launches new collaborations with other art, research and environmental initiatives.

The title Stereo'frogi'ic is a play on the word stereophonic – to play with the illusion of multi-directional audible perspective – in this case presenting a quasi-bioacoustic sound piece, crafted from found recordings of frogs, insects, a recording of an animal scattering in the bushes and other 'vocal' animals wavering about in a stereo field. This piece was recorded and edited in the summer of 2019.

I have used slightly modified animals sounds to create aural illusions, morphing the perception of animal and machine generated sounds or raw recordings and digitally effected sounds. I wanted to create a tempo that would mimic something similar to the meditative sense you can experience from the flow or sound of the wind and other elements, when you are sitting in an open field while recording.

Felicity Mangan is an Australian sound artist and composer based in Berlin, Germany.  In different situations such as solo performances and collaborative projects, Felicity samples and plays her field recordings and found sounds to create quasi-bioacoustic music.

Felicity has released several solo publications, one on Longform Editions titled Stereo’frog’ic, a play on the word stereophonic –  presenting a sound piece, crafted from found recordings of frogs, insects and other ‘vocal’ animals wavering about in a stereo field. As well as Creepy Crawly (Mappa Editions) and Bell Metal Reeds (One Instrument). More recently Wet on Wet (Klangklamm/Warm Winters Ltd.), Train Tracks Recorded and Editing by Felicity Mangan (Possible Motive) and a single Körner Park (Care of Editions). As well as a former duo project release with Stine Janvin Native Instrument - Camo (Shelter Press). Felicity has presented projects in many different settings including Technosphärenklänge CTM/HKW, Sonic Act Academy and Sound design for 100 Climate Conversation for the Power House Museum, Sydney, Australia.
