Hraach - The Next Level 099 On Proton Radio Guest Mix [26 - 05 - 2016]

Unless you've been living under a rock, you should have heard of @JesseFuterman by now. The Toronto-based (soon to be Montreal) musician has been making waves with EPs on @Omena-Records and more recently, @ChurchUK. These releases marked a bit of a turning point for Jesse as the majority of his output prior to this was more hip-hop and jazz focused, although, that same aesthetic is not lost on his newer material. 

With his productions ranging primarily within the aforementioned genres, you may be a little bit surprised to find that his DJ sets are often more boogie, soul and disco inspired. By the time he was sixteen, he had already caught the ear of one of the biggest radio DJs on the planet in Gilles Peterson, who ended up playing his music on BBC Radio One. That further inspired him to make music and is likely a big part of the reason why we've got the opportunity to get to know him a little bit better today.

Before you experience Burning Man, you always have an image of how it would be. After a couple days, I realised it was a lot different than I had imagined. Being in the middle of no where surrounded by dust, where everybody around you shares the same vibe and we all come together as one was like a dream. I wish I could live this dream forever. During my White Ocean set, the atmosphere around was shaking with a thousand voices; like that part of the song when the music stops and the voices die down, but a fragile few still float in the air.  It's a different planet. Without even realising, you connect with everything around you. Your music is asking questions and it's demanding for a story to be told. Thank you White Ocean and I can't wait to see you in the dust!

a week ago (june 2017, because if u read this in a month or 13 years a week ago will mean nothing) i started working on a Commercial Break #4, a few days after this i ended up with 9 tracks

a commercial break is about flipping some random sample on my hard drive, most of the time samples with a crap quality because there's no other way (u can check the #1 #2 and #3 on that same soundcloud) while celebrating the best thing that has ever been on TV aka Lost that i watch religiously all the way through once a year

u can get all those tracks on my bandcamp for like 1 european dollar (or more) 

i hope any of this somehow bring joy to your life, or anger, any type of emotion really that's gonna take u away from the vegetative state or our society

Commercial Breaks

All the great samplers of our time dug a bit of Brazilian. The most obvious suspects being beat-making legends, Madlib and the late great, Jay Dee; but other genre trailblazers - such as Drum & Bass’ beloved DJ Marky - also brought the music of Brazil to an audience that had perhaps not been exposed to it’s delights. Even fucking Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy” was heavily influenced by Brazilian legend, Jorge Ben’s “Taj Mahal” - listen to it for fuck sake! (youtube.com/watch?v=Ex9jWJ5V014).

Another chap with an ear for a sample is the super gifted Adam Wickens aka Admin (@AdminUK). Also an aficionado for the nations sounds, the Bristolian has woven together a patchwork quilt of 100% Brazilian material, beaming with colour and zinging with spice - almost suspiciously in time for the summer sun. Easing you in with near lulabilic textures, Admin leads you on a sweltering sonic ramble through the winding nooks of Rio, stopping off for some Feijoada in the favelas and winding up on the Copacabana - Caipirinha in one hand, broken Havana’s in the other. Borderline offensive stereotyping aside, Adam’s mixtape is really one to be proud of and an essential accompaniment to any sun filled plans you may have. Enjoy.

Late 80s South African dance floor winners only! Selected by DJ Okapi and Antal, the compilation holds tracks by Jivaro, The Hard Workers, Ayobayo Band, S.Y.B. & many more. This is the sharp electronic music that fuelled the local Pantsula dances during the 80s and 90s . A must have for fans of Bubblegum and Kwaito music. 

The 12 tracks selected for Pantsula! come from a very unique, very different time and place. They represent the birth of electronic dance music in South Africa, through the songs of one particular independent label from the time: Music Team. The sound represents the culmination of the bubblegum era, when South Africa’s disco artists outgrew their American influences and forged an increasingly electronic and ‘local’ pop sound.

Evolving over time since long before the 80s, the distinctly South African subculture of Pantsula is more closely associated with an attitude, a style and a signature dance, rather than any specific sound. In the late 1980s and early 90s, Pantsula was also the name given to a new type of dance music taking over the streets of South Africa, influenced by earlier bubblegum and the rise of Shangaan Disco, but with a far broader appeal and a harder, purely electronic sound.

In Hour 2 it's Jesse Futerman, the Canadian producer who started making music when he was 16. He recently finished recording his EP for the Sounds Of Beaubien Ouest (SOBO) imprint , where he worked with musicians, sampling their playing and assembling their sounds alongside other varying samples. Project Pablo assisted in the mixdown and the 'Waterzone' EP is released next week. He told us;
"This mix is a collection of what heavily inspired my EP. Many of these songs have been favorites since I have been a teenager and continue to touch and inspire me as time clicks on. While some may find it strange that there is no house music, most of my reference points for house oddly lie in jazz, as that is what I mainly listen to at home. Hopefully, these songs will give you the same peace and reflection that they have given me. I hope you enjoy."

Playing on Menorca last summer and taking a swim afterwards was awesome. As the bar is in front of the Mediterranean Sea we wanted to give the night a warm vibe with lots of percussions, salsa and African / South-American influences. The set has a build-up from 98 to 132 bpm and back again as we ended the night with some of our favorite soul/disco tracks. Hope you enjoy, bailar al ritmo!

Saint Paul is a Producer and DJ living in Lyon (France).

From an Ivorian father and a French mother, the young artist was born in Abidjan and raised in Lyon.

Influenced by African music, jazz, hip hop and funk are now integral parts of Saint Paul's music.

Since his teenage years, Saint Paul is building a style around groove and emotion. His music is produced to make the crowds dance. However, some of his tracks are intimate and ideal to listen to at home.

In 2015, surrounded by Folamour, Kaffe Crème and Ethyène with whom he shared common influences and affinities, Saint Paul co-founded his own label. More than a record company, the Moonrise Hill Material family is born and gives new impetus to his career with two appearances on VA and the release of his first solo EP on wax.
