The Label

As a deep house collective formed in the beautiful city of Naples, Marsupials have burst onto the music scene with releases on Sccucci Manucci, Seven Music, Color in Music and now Large. They collaborate with London DJ Marcus Raute on their debut EP for us with spectacular results. The title track is a minimal late night groover that is slightly reminiscent of early MAW and Mood II Swing productions. A slightly stripped down version is also offered here in the Dub Mix. The final two tracks tread into deeper territory with the recognizable moody keys and organic beats that are quickly becoming the trademark sound for this talented production team.

Nachtbraker is back on Heist after his 2014 Gute Laune EP with another set of his dreamy laid back sound filled with lovely textures, rolling synths and always interesting and evolving arrangements. Whether it’s ‘Dark Roast’ (bonus points for the vocal hihats and ooooh that bassline), the haunting electronics meet sugar sweets pads on ‘Gurl’, the triplet marching band hihats on ‘Le troubadour’ or the insane amount of elements working together on ‘You’re out of your element’, it’s all equally deep, energetic and extremely well thought of.

Friendship, love or one’s own self-discovery – everything begins with this simple question: Who Are You?

With a Caribou’esque light-footed breeze, the Erfurt-based band combines the sometimes moody, sometimes confident voice of singer Martin Hansmann with Sebastian Klausing’s subdued house beats, before Robert Fränzel is pushing the right keys on his saxophone.

Zurich-based duo Animal Trainer who are up for remix duty are not only an instance of the legendary Hive Club, the Swiss duo have also revealed their passion for pop songs with plaintive vocals on such labels like Katermukke and Stil vor Talent. Their remix of „Who Are You“ is operating with a unique sense for playful synths who are soaring into crazy-wacky acid pirouettes.

Last year I met Sissi Rada. She was singing in Greek and playing the harp when I first listened to her. 
I asked her to record something with me as I wanted to use her voice for my music. We sat down, I played the harmonies on my Prophet 5 and she would jam over it. Her first take is the take you're listening to. Back then I was in my bedroom studio. We had noises from the street, roommates the next door, but the take captured the magic and the spontaneous moment of just doing music. I didn't want to record it again. 

Her lyrics are about the devastating political and financial situation in Greece and I tried - as much as I could do - to reflect that with my music.

The man that represents the deeper side of Amsterdam house is back on Dirt Crew. His last outing on Detroit Swindle’s “Heist Recordings”, the “Le Troubadour EP” was another fine example of that laid back funky deep house only Nachtbraker can squeeze out.

Settling into the groove immediately is ‘Hump’, bouncing chords and a warbling Rhodes lead into an irresistible bass line. The title track, ‘Backstabber’ hits right in the hips, a chugging feel good work out for the dance floor. The flip remains true to the flavor of this whole EP, offering up a massive speaker rattling bottom end and funk flavored keys on ’Time Is Of The Essence’, while ’Monday Mourning’ steps up with expertly cut disco samples, an effervescent excursion with a jazzy lead and a touch of vocoder for good measure. The release is rounded out with digi only offering ‘Yaaa’, a sub driven deep house work out, boasting swelling loops and hypnotic percussion.

Nachtbraker’s sharp sense of harmony and knack for vibe is ever present throughout this whole release, he has truly fine tuned his sound to a perfect balance of unbounded energy and stylish musicianship. We are happy to welcome him back on Dirt Crew with this classy release.

Our little Dirt Crew sub label Spiel started out in late 2013 with three excellent releases, the first two by „Clancy“ featuring remixes by “Urulu” and “Prins Thomas” followed by a stellar EP from „Mercury“. After a hiatus SPIEL is back for 2016. Renewed and inspired we have a bunch of both fresh faced and established artists on board packing quality releases for the year. With sounds spanning from Indie Dance and Electronica to Disco and spaced out Balearic jams, we’re proud to present you the first of our outings for 2016.

First up is close friend and rock solid producer „Good Guy Mikesh“. Out of Leipzig, Germany, he’s the guy with the Perfect pitch, forward thinking ideas, an impressive discography of 12”s to his name, and a huge range of influences from funk and soul, to 80’s new wave electro and back again. He’s come to the table with four tracks we’ve been busting to share with you.

‘Whim’ is the steady builder. Spacious and very much alive with sliding leads and layers of analogue synths that sparkle, it’s melancholic bliss, it’s a deep breath inducing, dance floor lifting, thought provoking piece of beauty. ’Why Not’ is something deeper, the bass slips and slides dancing with the top line, while a palette of plucked strings, tuned percussion and Mikesh’s signature synth soundscapes reach into the distance as the track continues to roll.

On the B side, ’Cookie’ is joyful, its playful keys and poolside energies toast to warm weather and good times. Bouncing arpeggios lead the charge in the break, rising before giving way to euphoric synthetic strings which lead us back into the elated refrain. ‘Corone’ hints towards Mikesh’s disco history, boasting a burly bass and a funk all of its own, this indie dance shaker’s got a solid groove and vibe to spare.

A listening pleasure and a dance floor treat, Mikesh’s far reaching and assured musical vision is inescapable on this record. The perfect welcome back for SPIEL.
