PRIMAL

Primal is an Icelandic electronic music producer and Dj based in Copenhagen.
The past few years, Primal has been involved with an electronic music project by the name of Kúra, featuring the Icelandic singer Fanney Osk.

Kúra, which became a widely recognized electronic act in northern Europe, offered an opportunity to explore new areas, ideas and genres. 
He eventually got introduced to the underground techno society by Just This crew.

Primal was then inspired to evolve his soundscape in new directions, resulting in a previously unexplored, darker universe with hypnotizing melancholic rhythms and heavy bass-lines.
The man behind Primal, Brynjar Bjarnfoss, was born in Reykjavík, Iceland where spent his early childhood years.

Since moving to Copenhagen at an early age, the music was always on the agenda. As a young adult he quickly got recognition in the Copenhagen underground electronic scene. He rapidly became a re-occurring act at various well renowned events, such as; Roskilde Festival, Distortion, Stella Polaris, STRØM and numerous clubs across Europe. He is currently featured as a newly implemented act of the Milano based Just This movement, and has recently cofounded the Just This record label.

After last month’s »Busted Moniker« EP from Quarion, Retreat is thrilled to announce a new 12" courtesy of house music’s most energetic duo, the incomparable Session Victim! The aptly titled »Two Man House Band EP« is the lads’ first record since their 2014 magnum Opus »See You When You Get There« and perfectly transcribes the energy that Session Victim pour into their incendiary live show. Tailormade for a night out in the club or a joyous day at the festival, the »Two Man House Band EP« once again prooves that Session Victim are unstoppable in their pursuit of the ultimate groove!

»Summer Games« is an ode to that most festive of seasons and could easily hold the claim of being Retreat’s »biggest« track so far. Built around an Hypnotic organ loop, »SummerGames« completely blurs the lines between house, funk and soul : rolling breakbeats, catchy vocal snippets and a very groovy bassline are the core elements of this anthem that could rock any party. Yet Session Victim add a slight twist in the form of a melancholic string motive that appears in two chiseled breakdowns. It’s a little reminder that summers do not last forever and that one should enjoy them while they last ...

Flip the record in order to dive into the deeper realms of »Black Cream«, a more reflective track for the late hours. With its jazzy (almost broken) beat, guitar licks, rhodes pads, subtle percussion and ethereal vocals, »Black Cream« is the soundtrack to an exciting underwater trip with Matthias and Hauke at the controls. Thanks to the captains’ lively drum programming, the track flows effortlessly and we’re treated with many surprises along the way before a gradual rise brings us back to the surface.

»Finderlohn« is a smokey downtempo workout which finds Session Victim digging deep in their collection to demonstrate their prowess in manipulating samples. Beginning with an instanly classic guitar and piano loop, »Finderlohn« allows a shuffly breakbeat to take center stage, sometimes reinforced with double-time hihats for a more dramatic effect. The tune is definitely a headnodder’s paradise and the listener is taken that little bit higher thanks to a mystical flute solo that concludes »Finderlohn« in a psychedelic way.

The first release of Slagerparade - Full Pupp´s brand new imprimt for sought after or (too long previously) neglected classic´s of norwegian heritate has finally arrived. Gary (who also goes by the name Slikk Tim) hails not from the streets of Detroit, Oakland or Atlanta, but from the post-industrial city of Nancy, France. While he might be a relatively new name as a producer, he’s got plenty of experience as a session musician for the likes of Dâm-Funk and Orlando Voorn, as well as having played for Los Hermanos, the project headed by Gerald Mitchell of Underground Resistance.

Indeed, it was Voorn who introduced Gary to Underground Resistance’s Mad Mike, who helped get him his first deal on Clone Records. Now Gary’s newest slice of futuristic electro funk – The Sugar Cane Chronicles Vol. 1 - is being released on Hypercolour next month.

The EP’s not out until 1st April (no foolin’) but we’ve got the exclusive premiere of the lead track, ‘Preachin’ Some Tight Game’. A super-groovy blend of fluttering jazz chords, silky caramel bass, and raw drum programming courtesy of Gary’s trusted 606. Topped off with a squiggly little G-funk melody that’ll worm its way inside your skull and set up shop for the spring.

We're all very aware of Dan Shake's uncanny ability to hypnotise hips at his own beck and call. Our boogie get down from a couple months ago is ample evidence for any naysayers. And here he is, back at it again and twisting the knobs on an exciting new project. 

XOA's MO is to match-make the golden era of 70s Afrobeat and contemporary electronica together. It's all very tropical, and perfect background music for the cocktail-wielders among you. Whiffs of Floating Points and Bonobo exist, mainly because XOA is equally comfortable backed by a full live band as behind the decks.

Shake003 is titled "AIYE LE" and features afrobeat royalty in Dele Sosimi — yours for the taking in May. Meanwhile, Mr. Shake provides the rejig, implanting a smidgen of Detroit shuffle into an already groovy original.

Big techno track from Skatebård with remixes by Chmmr, Telephones and Jesse.

This time Untz Untz have got the closely associated Skatebård to deliver nothing less than a catchy techno track. Although the track consists only of a bassline, some percussion and some 909, it still works like a charm on the dance floor and you will even find yourself humming along to it. And how many techno tracks can you say that about? 'Confirmation Bias' is a marathon clocking in at almost 14 minutes. Not a minute too long.

The track was previously released on vinyl in 7hvn03, a 7inch sold in the Hivern discs party in Nov 2011.

We decided to make a small pressing 12" for So will be now.... Some people wanted to have it on vinyl and we felt a bit sad only having the track in the LP. We decided to include the original LP version and a club revision we did together with Pional  (we mixed again but i'ts pretty similar to the original :p) that will be exlcusive for this vinyl. Comes in a nice gren vinyl, designed by our great friend Arnau Pi. It was mixed by Hannes Vieger in Berlin in Feb'13
