Well into the twenty-first century, the Pacific Northwestern area still produces some of the best music in the country. The early alternative rock movement in the very early 1990s jammed the regionâs first stake into the soil, claiming the sister cities of Seattle and Portland as fertile grounds for new music. Stepping forward with a fresh foot is Saturna, a four-piece that was founded in Portland but now divides its residence between Oregon and Seattle. The debut LP, Some Delicious Enemy, takes the atmospheric beauty of their first EP, ...All Night, to the next level. In Portland, the legendary Tony Lash (Dandy Warhols, Stars of Track and Field, Elliott Smith) mixed âPop Rocks,â making Saturnaâs first radio track from last yearâs â¦All Night a new demon, with a cleaner sound that expands every band memberâs talent to fill every inch of sonic space. Back in Seattle, Brin Addison (Smashing Pumpkins, Chris Cornell) mixed the capacious "Much More" and electro-rocker "Fall." 

Basement production and multi-instrumentalists may appear often in modern indie rock bands, but Saturna contains years of roadie, tech, and engineering experience, as well as music journalism and computer programming â important perspectives not often found from under the stage lights. With Eric Block on lead guitar, Ryan Carroll lends bass and guitar along with his ethereal vocals. Though Steve-O had a heavy hand in their EPâs production, many more names have taken part in the production of Some Delicious Enemy. Steveâs cuts still provides a variety of the bandâs instrumentation, and his style fits well with Saturnaâs newest member â drummer Matt Badger. The youngest in the now-quartet, his love for songwriting thatâs less predictable â âsongs that gave you the feeling that the artist toiled and agonized over how the final product would represent their ideasâ â was the missing puzzle piece. Now complete, Saturnaâs sound has the fullness its past efforts have always implied. 

With their last EP, Saturna received endless praise on an international level. Featured on a whole slew of podcasts and blogs, their music appeared on MTVâs Bamâs Unholy Union, played on KEXP, and can be found on the Weathered Underground soundtrack â an interactive film that features some of the best underground talent, including The Blakes, Sirens Sister, and The Lashes. The epic âRoll Downâ opens Some Delicious Enemy, leading into the whirlwind of âFallâ before launching into âPop Rocksâ within the first 15 minutes of the record. Spanning across 45 short-but-sweet minutes, Saturna refreshes the meaning of what ânext big thingâ was always supposed to sound like.

After releasing a string of singles starting in 2016, Pia Fraus are now releasing their first full-length album entitled Field Ceremony in almost a decade. Both the "Autumn Winds" and "That's Not All" singles have been met with critical acclaim, creating anticipation for the forthcoming new album. On October 12th in the U.S. and Oct 16th in Europe and Japan, the decade long wait for a new Pia Fraus album will be over. Released on Seksound (Europe), Shelflife (U.S.), and Vinyl-Junkie Records (Japan), Field Ceremony is a triumphant return for the band, bringing back their signature dreampop sounds alongside fresh takes on pop structures. From the beautifully composed pop delicacies of "No Filters Needed" to the almost slowcore dreaminess of "Don't Tell Me How" to the explosive pop of "Sugar High of the Year", Pia Fraus bring to the table a dreampop brightness tinged with the more somber elements of life. 

Eve Komp (vocals, synths, metallophone), Kärt Ojavee (synths), Rein Fuks (guitars, vocals, percussion), Reijo Tagapere (bass), and Margus Voolpriit (drums) come together once again to produce Field Ceremony. Former member Kristel Eplik returns to record backing vocals and Pia Fraus' former drummer, Joosep Volk, also returned to direct the video for "That's Not All". The album has been mixed and mastered on analog desk by the band's longtime friend Lauri Liilvak. 

The dreampop veterans in Pia Fraus are back after over a decade. Field Ceremony is a demonstration of the band's continued contribution to the dreampop genre. Fans will be pleased with the results and new listeners will be in for a treat as they encounter this long awaited new work from the dreampop masters.

From swingin’ Sudbury, Ontario, CA (nada), here come TOMMY and the COMMIES with their debut recordings for Slovenly Recordings, "Here come Tommy and the Commies!" “Here Come…” is 16 blistering minutes of hooliganistic mod-punk madness featuring Jeff Houle, also known as the sole brain behind budget rock cult faves STRANGE ATTRACTOR, and his brother Mitch, known ⅔ collectively as the power-pop force STATUES of P. Trash Records fame. 

Swagger drenched youngster frontman Tommy Commy recruited Strange Jeff by dragging him into a bathroom stall during a punk show, playing him an inaudible demo on a phone. The Houle Two agreed to join forces for Tommy’s first foray into the world of record making on the strength of giving “Spiral Scratch” era Howard Devoto a run for his dosh on the vox on any given holiday. This kid has GOT IT, BABY! 

In a perfect modern world, songs like “Devices,” and “Suckin’ In Your 20’s” would be massive chart smashes on the level of “Teenage Kicks.” Those days are long gone, but here we are in 2018, giving YOU what you need, and what THEY don’t deserve.

Following a recalibration and consolidation with their recent electronics-inflected album, 2018’s U.E.F., The Oscillation is back with their sixth and most ambitious album to date, Wasted Space. A meditation on the nature of existence in the face of what can be insurmountable odds, Wasted Space finds The Oscillation painting from the darker shades of the kaleidoscopic scale.

“The origins of Wasted Space go back to Monographic in 2016,” muses Demian Castellanos - the mastermind behind The Oscillation. “That was a very bleak and heavy record and I really needed to move out of that mindset. Making U.E.F freed me up to write a coherent collection of narrative songs and compositions. Wasted Space is a partial continuation of a journey started with U.E.F., but one that re-incorporates more song-based ideas again.”

What’s immediately apparent is that Wasted Space sets it stall well away from the prosaic third-eye tropes that have become orthodoxy. Album opener ‘Entity’ establishes the pace with a focus on the dancefloor as much as on the navigation of existence. Fusing muscular grooves with an industrial wall of sound, these are bold steps into wholly new territories.

“There’s an irony at play here,” considers Castellanos. “It’s a twisted party song, albeit a party for one.” But what a party it is. The mutant disco is bolstered by the rhythmic call-and-response of ‘Drop’, a track that eschews conventional methods of dance sensibility for more instinctive and primal urges. This is music that calls out to the suitably attuned. “We’re reaching out on an innate level,” says Castellanos. “It’s a form of wordless communication that transcends the limitations of verbal language and thought processes.”

Wasted Space’s more somatic moments are tempered and balanced by episodes of contemplation and reflection. Fuelled by dreamy, orchestral sweeps and mournful, sustained notes, ‘The Human Shell’ is a deceptive yet redemptive piece that at first glance appears to be resigned to the futility of existence. But look once again and there you’ll find hope. “People will be able to relate to this song,” states Castellanos. “There's a lot of love and empathy in there and it reaches out to say that we’re not alone, that we don’t have to exist independently of each other.”

Bringing Wasted Space to an emphatic conclusion is the epic instrumental ‘Luminous Being’. Ambitious in scope and delivery, it methodically and unequivocally slow releases repressed emotions to throw the wider world into sharper focus. Hedonistic yet reflective, Wasted Space is an album that moves purposely along a high wire as it finds the perfect balance between dealing with life and escaping it. The Oscillation’s finest album yet, Wasted Space is the area to which you’ll return to again and again.
