"For Juneteenth I wanted to make the mix as black as possible. I know this is technically a day of celebration for African-Americans but any people whose ancestors were a part of the transatlantic slave trade can see how much this day means to many. So I chose to include black music globally. This mix is very me as I love genre-switching, but the theme of highlighting black artists and producers is very present. The power of sound in a strange land when our enslaved ancestors were tragically and violently stolen from their homes was undeniably a survival tactic and very therapeutic. I could even feel the change in my mood before and after recording." - @mistervacation

We're digging back almost a year ago, presenting you with a fiery hot unreleased recording from Hot Mass for this week. In Dec 2023, we had the pleasure of a Yessi (@yessimusic) opening set for the inimitable Carlos Souffront. Two of our favorite wild musical weirdoes made a perfect pairing of classic and bleeding edge sounds. Although Yessi now resides in LA, she is part of Pittsburgh's @dyspheric-x collective – a crew centering trans and queer artists pushing the boundaries of club music. Dj Juanny draws inspiration from the sounds of Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and the UK, blending them with samples from films, TV and pop culture.

Of Honduran and Salvadoran descent, Juanny grew up in a household where his parents filled the air with salsa and merengue, while his sister introduced him to rap, R&B and Miami bass. His passion for music took shape in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district. While working at a revered streetwear shop -- a hotspot for notable Bay Area DJs who played in-store sets and sold mixtapes -- Juanny became obsessed with DJing. He soon started throwing parties, spinning tracks sourced from the more obscure corners of Soundcloud.

After a stint living in Miami, Juanny became passionate about bringing the emerging club
sounds of his adopted home back to the Bay Area. This led to the creation of the party series and netlabel, Amor Digital.

In early 2020, he dove into music production, self-releasing a string of EPs. His 4-track EP 'SUCHITOTO' was released via the seminal Mexico City label, N.A.A.F.I., followed by his first vinyl release, the 4-track EP 'MIATA', on the Oakland label NO BIAS. Juanny also hosts monthly radio shows on Lower Grand Radio and HydeFM. 

“This mix was therapeutic in many ways! In my experience, recording a mix is either hella seamless -- done in one take -- or a project I obsess over for weeks. I set out to make something cohesive but I didn't want to overthink it. I told myself I'd do it in one take or go home and try again another time. Ended up with seventy minutes of experimental club music with roots in the Americas! Lots of tracks via TraTraTrax and Putivuelta. 

Generally, I think I find a sweet spot somewhere between dembow, guaracha, baile funk and UK bass-heavy sounds.”

In case you missed it — Texas-born, Pittsburgh and LA-based DJ Yessi lit up the main room at the FERVOR 2-Year Anniversary Party, opening the night with a genre-bending set that set the perfect tone. Her mix started with an intentional, driving pace and gradually turned up the heat, blending acid, techno, dreamy vocals, and Latine rhythms into an infectious groove. The crowd quickly matched her energy, going from warmed up to FERAL as she masterfully shifted moods and textures. Yessi’s set didn’t just open the night — it ignited it, laying down the perfect foundation for Mr. HoochieMama to take things even further.
