hi i’m derek. i’ve been playing music since 1991, beginning with guitar and ultimately becoming a multi-instrumentalist (guitar, drums, bass, keys, kazoo, etc.) while i began writing and recording original songs on my 4-track in the latter part of the 90’s. i have been working on new stuff for about a year now, and i look forward to sharing it with you. Drawing from his American and Igbo heritage, Dubem's music blends cultural influences and personal history as a second-generation survivor of the Biafran genocide. His father introduced his mother to reggae, shaping Dubem's artistic vision. Inspired by Bob Marley, Fela Kuti, Ali Farka Touré, and others, he embraces improvised music and the avant-garde.

Dubem's pivotal moments include playing a Wailer in Kwame Kwei-Armah's Bob Marley musical at Baltimore's Center Stage and working for Ghanaian interdisciplinary artist JOJO ABOT in 2019, which deepened his artistic exploration and independence.
