Emotional invalidation is when someone tells another person their feelings are wrong, exaggerated, or unjustified, instead of trying to understand them.

That includes judging happiness itself, like implying “you shouldn’t feel this happy,” which attacks the person’s inner experience rather than engaging with reality.

​Why it feels so absurd
Happiness is, at its core, a deeply personal response to one’s own values and life, not a public referendum others get to vote on.

Arguing about whether someone is “allowed” to feel happy reveals more about the critic’s discomfort, envy, or worldview than about the validity of the other person’s joy.
