With his work spanning some 15 years of commercial releases, the Dutch master is a welcome returnee to Meanwhile with a stellar quartet of original tracks.

A regular across the industry’s finest purveyors of modern and cerebral progressive house music, Alex O’Rion has constantly found his music featured on such esteemed imprints as Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat, Guy J’s Lost & Found and Nick Warren’s Hope. A regular visitor to the upper echelons of the Beatport charts, over a million Spotify streams in 2020 and 4,000 followers points to broad appeal and wide-ranging support.

Now returning to Meanwhile after a trio of remixes for label head-honchos GMJ & Matter on June 2020’s “Gauntlet” and February 2021’s “The Path”, Alex O’Rion now returns to the label with a devastating 4-track original EP of unrivalled quality.

The “Echium” title track is a blistering sub-bass monster that drives along powerfully on a bed of ticking hi-hats and chest-thumping kick. Building in momentum, smooth pads and effortless synth lines flow across the 8-minute piece before revelling in a stripped-back breakdown. Picking up the pace again in the third movement, gorgeous harmonic overtones layer delicately across each other, borne of never-ending delay sweeps.

“Stranded” continues the powerful rhythmic narrative and otherworldly sonic landscape before a percussive loop provides subtle melodic phrasing. Shifting synth sequences bisect the left-right spectrum as waves of white noise fall against a rocky outcrop of percussive hats. Melodic lines continue to evolve in delicate patterns into the second half in a sonic palette of sheer bliss.

A sumptuous bassline groove propels “The Chase” through its hypnotic paces, accompanied by a chugging rhythmic backdrop. Simultaneously, gentle synth motifs pulsate in side-chained synchronicity as a rich symphony of sound swells into the second half against a plucked earworm phrase. The result is a dynamic and devastating club-friendly track that is sure to inspire a multitude of hands-in-the-air moments.

“The Serpent” ends the quadrilogy with its rippling sound effects that cascade in spiral patterns against a melodious foreground. Delicate percussive patterns marry with a deep resonant kick to provide a rhythmic anchor, giving freeform synth motifs the opportunity to express a meandering sonic voyage that reaches a powerful crescendo at the midpoint. Hitting its stride again in the third movement with additional melodic sequencing, the result is a charismatic end to an outstanding original EP."

Premiere: Death on the Balcony - Find A Way [The Soundgarden]

Madloch's Sound Avenue imprint opens the new year by welcoming Pedro Capelossi back to the label for a new EP. With a career that spans just over half a decade, Pedro Capelossi has quickly emerged from Spain's avant-garde electronic music landscape. The Brazilian born, Barcelona based artist has forged a distinctive sound which focuses on inventive use of atmosphere and rhythm, drawing the lines between global dance cultures without adhering to any fixed formula. Pablo Bolivar's Seven Villas has been a primary vehicle for Pedro's far-reaching work, with additional projects via Nick Warren's The Soundgarden, The Purr and TOR highlighting his resume. Sound Avenue has also been a comfortable home for Pedro, with the Madloch and Subnode collaborations 'Turmeric Latte' and 'Vanilla Noise' marking his label debut in 2020, a project which spawned four originals and two remixes across the next two calendar years. Now, as 2023 begins to take shape, Pedro makes a welcome return to Sound Avenue with a four-track showcase entitled 'Salted Caramel'.

Established house talent Harry Romero makes a standout debut on Rebellion with the ​Afro Horn​ EP, an impressive two track release made specifically for the label.

“I​ t’s always a great experience when you set your sights on a certain sound and outcome when you’re in the studio. ‘Afro Horn’ and ‘R.W.P.’ were created for Damian Lazarus. I’m glad he saw the vision and signed them to his Rebellion imprint as no other label could have done them justice! ‘Afro Horn’ is a straight up deep tribal experience framed around an African flute solo. I wanted to create a sort of beauty and the beast track with this.‘RWP’ is a bit more musically sophisticated with its moving keyboard parts and a real spaced out arrangement which gives it so much room to breath.”​ ​Harry Romero​.

Afro Horn​ starts proceedings in a tribal fashion. A well-rounded kick merges with resonant percussion, that takes the form of a rattlesnake’s tail, providing the track with an enigmatic, Saharan-like quality. ​R.W.P​ rounds off the release. Keyboard chimes fuse with a gentle up-and-down bassline, as ethereal chords are layered underneath to form an emotive dance-floor number.

A regular on the electronic music scene, ​Harry Romero​’s talent for adapting styles shows no signs of slowing down. Traversing the various incarnations of house music with ease, the US native has produced multiple EPs for Josh Wink’s Ovum Recordings as well as Yousef’s Circus Recordings; whilst his tougher, gritty productions have found a home on Tronic Music in the past. With an upcoming Essential Mix, Harry Romero is really beginning to cement his reputation as an esteemed and respected artist in the electronic music sphere.
