Unpretentious, crazy, funky, hyperactive, hilarious and highly entertaining – this is the essence of the musical quartet called The Pinholes. For almost four years now, this trippy, psychedelic group has been rocking Singapore’s (and Malaysia’s) sound waves, giving them a Rockin’ Rolling good time. After all, their slogan is “The People’s Band” and they certainly punctuate the music scene with a mighty dose of fun.

Comprising the power-packed act, Famierica Suliman, “Modjo” Suliman and Azril Zakaria, these four are out to make your day. This tightly-knit bunch has no doubts about delivering an awesome party, no objections to a special collaboration and definitely no qualms about performing great beat-driven music.

Born and bred in “The West Side” (of Singapore, that is), these musicians from “Gomz Street” met over a strong affinity for music, with the likes of The Quests, The Swallows, Stoned Revivals, Siglap Five and MC5. And as quickly as they bonded, The Pinholes’ profound passion for music evolved into a unique sound. Expect a brilliant blend of kaleidoscopic beats and local compositions that capture the soul of Stray Dogs, the dynamism of Mick Jagger and the harmonic pitching of Beach Boys.

With the tongue-in-cheek ‘Shake & Bake’, refreshing ‘Never Gonna Take My Life’ and the catchy sing-along ‘Longlive Rock N’ Roll’, it’s no surprise the band has hosts of fans and friends in the league of nine hundred and counting. Their snazzy, original tunes and more have been performed live on Suria MediaCorp TV; 98.7FM radio shows; Lime Sonic Bang (2007); Rampage the Durian!, Rock the City, Making Waves and Year End Celebrations (all at Esplanade, 2007); Zouk Out! (2007); 2006 Sembawang Fest; Baybeats (2005 and 2006) and 2004 F1 Powerboat; as well as collaborated with special projects such as Rewind: Hitam Puteh Cinema on Wheels (2008), Jazzyjazz and The Razzmatazz with Cake Theatre (2008).

Other exciting works include their EPs – The Acoustic Sessions (2008), Longlive Rock And Roll (2006), Who Needs To Listen (2005) and their eponymous first EP The Pinholes (2004) – and Malay single ‘Besok Oh Yeah!’ (2006), as well as live DVD The Rescue (2006).

Much like songbird Edith Piaf, Madeleine Peyroux spent her teenage years busking the busy streets of Paris. Just like the ‘little sparrow’, Madeleine befriended the city’s street musicians and made its Latin quarter her first performing stage. Years later, Peyroux would cite iconic Piaf as an influence on her music and record a rendition of the classic La Vie En Rose, soulfully capturing the tune’s romanticism and melancholy.
 
Born in Athens, Georgia in 1974, Madeleine “grew up in a house filled with music” and from an early age “instinctively realised music’s soothing power” but it was her teenage years in the French capital that turned the childhood notion into an all-consuming vocation for life.

Young Madeleine moved to Paris with her mother in 1987 following her parents divorce. “To soothe me during the upheaval”, she recalls, “I was given a guitar and took to playing in the streets almost immediately.”

Thirty years after her formative busking days Peyroux is the proud curator of nine beguiling albums and an accomplished performer with sell out worldwide tours under her belt. Her atmospheric version of Serge Gainsborough’s La Javanaise was used in the soundtrack of Oscar Winner The Shape of Water and her countless accolades
include the coveted BBC International Artist Of The Year honour.
 
Madeleine’s thirst for creative exploration is unfading and her willingness to face creative challenges remains as solid now as it was three decades ago.

With endearing passion and great curiosity the unstoppable genre-defying virtuoso continues her search for the good and examines life with the treasured William Congreve belief that Music has charms to soothe the savage beast.
 
Madeleine might attribute her success to “mostly luck” but to the industry and loyal fans alike, it is the immense talent and utter dedication to her craft that shines through.
