Field recordings

On Önundarfjörður (fjord) in northwest Iceland is a small village, Flateyri. During the winter, there are lots of avalanches in the area.
In October 1995 a huge avalanche hit Flateyri. Many houses were wiped away and 20 died. Several other avalanches and bad weather closed the road to the village so the only way for rescue team was from sea.
The first rescue unit used a 45 year old pier at the bottom of the fjord at Holtstangi. This pier was built in 1950 in case avalanches closed the road and other communication to Flateyri
This terrible avalanche on that October night in 1995 demonstrated how important this pier was for the community, so it was rebuilt in the spring 1996.
This recording was made on the beach close to the pier on 19th of June 2012

Recorded on four channels nearby laggon under  Svínafellsjökull glacier south of Vatnajökull glacier in Iceland.
Two microphones are recording the soundscape above the  glacier lagoon and two hydrophones are placed in the lagoon.

More thunder!  Lots of storms here this summer.  Recorded using MKH 8020s in DIY closed-cell foam SASS, to a Sound Devices 702, volume 30, increased in post by 15 dB.  Yellow-rumped Thornbills and Eastern Yellow Robins are calling.  Capertee Valley, NSW, Australia.  22 degrees C.  February 17, 2012, 2.15 pm.

Alam-Pedja is vast protected wilderness area covering 342 square kilometres. It is situated in Central Estonia northeast of Lake Võrtsjärv, in a lowland area called the Võrtsjärv Basin and consists of rivers, their floodplains, various bogs, and some very different types of forests. There are very few people living there so that the human population density is comparable to that of wolf, bear and lynx. There are few roads so the forests and bogs are not too fragmented. Since 1997 Alam-Pedja has been recognized as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. In 2004 it was designated a Natura 2000 site.

In this album we hear recordings made in the mornings, in the day time, evenings and at nights from different types of habitats in Alam-Pedja. These soundscapes cover the springtime through summer to late autumn. Album starts with a soundscape recording where still lasts winter time. The listener gets a good idea of ​​how Alam-Pedja sounds through the year, gets a feel for the spirit and majesty of this wild area. Recordings were made over two years; 2017 & 2018.

Crispy morning dawn. Cuckoo and black grouse are in the beginning of their concert and at the same time Boreal owl is about to finish his nightly performance.

This has been a stormy fall, and in Finland has been already 40 days with stormy wind speeds as the average is 27 a year.  A small, but intense low pressure passed over creating wind speeds up to 31,3 m/s in the gusts and 27 m/s as average. 

I couldn’t resist recording this storm just in our backyard as it was evident when I opened the front door in the morning that this wind is going to make damage. (The picture)

Recording storms creates mostly undefined white noise that’s not very pleasant to listen. But it seems, that when the wind gets hard enough, there occurs (more or less) strange noise patterns with regular shapes that can make it sound interesting. 

In situ I could hear cars passing and chainsaws running.  I hope there’s a bit of this weird noise left in this recording, at least when listening with headphones.

And yes, when the gusts were as strongest, two trees come down. One pine on the roof of our neighbors sauna building 6.50 and an other one with the tree trunk breaking 8.28
