Recorded on the morning of 6 May 2020. One of the few advantages of covid lockdown was the absence of traffic to allow birdsong to be heard.

This is a “quiet recording” from nature reserve Flói in the southwest of Iceland.
This recording contains many local birds and migrants. Birds as Red- necked Phalarope, Arctic stern, Red throated diver, Black tailed Goldwit, Common Snipe, Golden Plover, Whimbrel, Eurasian Oystercatcher and many other birds are in this recording. Noisiest and probably "ugliest sound" in this recording is the Red throated diver´s territorial call, but they also express in the recording a beautiful calm conversation with their eyes.
Background noise is coming from the surf among the south cost.
The recording was made in 26th of June 2012 around 3 am and is just nine minutes of ten hours recording that day. The weather was calm, clear sky and temperature around 5°C.
This is a very quiet nature recording so you should not play it loud. If you stay there you can barely hear this birdsong or this bird activity with open ears. You should play it like you think you will hear it trough open window, as a background sound. Best way to listen to all the details and explore the bird species is using quality headphones. This recording contains also very loud session when all Red throated divers in the area “scream” their territorial call.

The Murray River drains a huge area of southeastern Australia, in its lower reaches forming a deep-flowing river lined with extensive red gum forests. In years of drought, the mouth of the river can receive so little flow as to silt up. But in flood, waters spread out into billabongs and wetlands, replenishing the land and nourishing these majestic riverine forests. 

This recording comes from mid morning in the red gum forest. Birdsong is spacious and often distant. Pied and grey butcherbirds call melodiously, along with the whistles of mulga parrots, the piping of magpie larks and the occasional distant screech of a white cockatoo. Crinia frogs call intermittently from moist areas on the forest floor. Small birds dart among the canopy; fantails, honeyeaters and flycatchers. Meanwhile a soft buzz of insects fills the warm air. 

As with our other 'meditations in nature' series, this is a single unedited recording, and a good example of a morning when at first it seems there is little going on, but the more one listens, the more you hear.

Nature reserve in Flói 2011 – Part 2

Birdsong filters through tall eucalypt forest in Australia's eastern highlands.

It is a sunny morning, the day after unsettled weather, and a strong breeze is still moving through trees up on surrounding ridges. But down in the shelter of a narrow gully, among tree ferns and dense shrubs, birds find refuge from the elements. Here, even though there is no running water, the ground is moist and plant growth is dense.

The birdsong heard is typical of these upland forests; golden whistlers, fantails, yellow-faced honeyeaters and grey shrike-thrushes call from the forest midstory. Meanwhile, smaller birds flit among low shrubs; scrub-wrens, spinebills, fairy-wrens and thornbills. From not far off, a superb lyrebird is heard giving a variety of percussive and sonorous vocalisations.

This is a single continuous recording, with an interesting diversity birdsong and just a little of that ridgetop breeze to give a sense of the landscape.

Recorded at Fort Cronkhite north of San Francisco. The doors to the old bunker have recently been sealed off for safety reasons so no door movement could be recorded. In spite of this I grabbed a tire iron and got to improvising latch and impact sounds. Schoeps CMC6/MK41-MK8 MS.

This piece was written for 840 and the NME. It is composed from five combinations of pitches and rhythms, stitched together to make one unfolding form in which groups of notes are covered and uncovered in turn. This process of covering up sounds led me to thinking about the phenomenon of auditory masking, whereby the perception of one sound is altered by another which occurs simultaneously (or very soon before/after). Auditory masking can affect the nature of sounds we hear in various ways, particularly when those sounds are already closely related in pitch or timbre.
