I was first turned on to Goa music in the early 90s, young and innocent, discovering the communal state of trance for the first time. Back then I wasn’t interested in its roots or it’s origins and preferred to get lost in music not thinking of the days to come or those gone by.
When it all became formulaic and a genre as such, things started to lose their magic and I begun to explore sounds of the past, turning my nose up at something which for me had lived it’s course…
I dived into a whole new sonic horizon, old relics which sounded new to me and more interesting than a lot of contemporary releases. Unconsciously, I was drawing a map which covered many seminal dancefloors worldwide. I would later find out that the distance between most of these tracks had no boundaries as they could just as well have been played in Chicago, Manchester, Gent, Ibiza, Baia Degli Angeli, or Goa…
This mix can be listened to like a GPS directing you towards those places, somewhere in the mid 80s, with Goa as the meeting point and final destination. Funnily enough it is also very close to the first mixes that helped put my name on the map almost 20 years ago…

You know the saying. The cream rises to the top? There are some key members of the Dj and collector community that get recognized more and more as time goes on. Not only for their knowledge about electronic music and their taste in tunes but also their no-frills attitude and focus on DJing as a whole. Estimulo is one of those handful. A former member of the futura event agency and DJ crew from Berlin with a desire to also release music as a label owner with Mixomat Recordings. Heavily passionate about radio since a being young child has led to many variations of shows dedicated to the music he supports and follows. Most recently, a weekly Radio Show (EstimuloShow @ mixomat.org since 2007, also on Cashmere Radio since 2017) kept him busy. Having played many key clubs throughout Europe while sharing the nightly bills with a who's who's list of some of the best underground names in house and techno isn't a surprise. As a DJ, Estimulo is more in tune with the deeper and soulful side of things. He approaches mixing uniquely with no pre-planned mixes favoring an expression of honesty and desire to play what he wants versus a goal of perfect but often stale mixing. Lately, he has taken to many streaming platforms DJing live with other hardcore music aficionados in marathon long mixing sessions. To say Estimulo contributes to every facet of the electronic music community would be an understatement. Search out some recent interviews with him to get more in depth with his extensive background and future plans. With some 30 years' worth of experience, knee deep into the sound of the underground, you can expect his selections to impress even the die-hards. It's certainly been a very strange and unpleasant year, finishing on an extremely sour note. However, some very, very wonderful and beautiful music has been released despite this, helping elevate one's spirit above the noise and dismal situation our planet is facing.

I didn't celebrate new year (a pint with my pal was it)...but earlier in the evening I made myself record this 2.5 hour mix of some of my favourite ambient and downtempo music of the year.

Also featured are some of Nick's sets from various gigs and festivals around the world during his 15 years of club DJing and promoting. He is currently based in Mexico City.

ABOUT THE SHOW:

Field Trips began its life as a humble one-off radio show on Balamii Radio in Peckham in 2016, with an all Japanese special hosted by Nick Cobby and Liam Jacquin- showcasing vinyl records bought on recent digging there. This was swiftly followed by a string of 'specials' presenting rumba and funk vinyl gathered from Cuba, Italian disco and South African Jazz to name but a few - interspersed with field recordings captured from the trips.

The radio shows evolved into live gigs and hosting parties in London. This was followed by a yearly party at Bar Bonobo in Tokyo, guest DJ sets at City Boy Lounge in Osaka alongside local Japanese talent, as well as guesting on Tokyo based radio station, Hamon Radio.

Over the years, the Field Trips sound developed past the more focussed 'specials' format to a thoughtful selection of ambient, balearic, IDM and downtempo sounds. Rhythmic, hypnotic and intriguing, with no corner of the globe left untouched.

The show is now streamed live on London's Netil Radio via London and Mexico City by Nick Cobby, with regular guest mixes by local and international talent. This archive features all the shows to date and is updated monthly.
