💫 invites 💫

Nowhereness is a new underground dance show conceptualised and hosted by UKAEA and Ani Kcam, both DJs and producers, and longstanding consorts in the exploration of sonic reverence. The show focuses on mixes which attempt to evade a clear or consistent sense of place in both time and geography. Attention is drawn instead to the veneration of rhythm, noise and atmopshere, and the ways these are exalted in the globe's historic and contemporary rave and club scenes. The pair cover alternate months, sometimes sharing the hour with a guest.

This month Ani Kcam welcomes guest DJ Isora to share the hour. Isora studied violin for 10 years at the Conservatory of Music in Italy, leading her to discover that her vision of life cannot be considered the same without music. She as inspired by electronic and techo music after moving to Glasgow and really found her passion for DJing during lockdown. Her goal is to enable people to go beyond listening, to feel and live the experience of her mixes which centralise the raw magic of the kick drum. Her mix for Nowhereness starts at this point, marching through a ghetto techno journey of wonderfully gross lyrics and wild rhythms.

Janus Rose is a producer, synthesist, and DJ hailing from Brooklyn, NY. A veteran of NYC's underground electronic music scenes, she has evolved her sound constantly over more than a decade. Composing hip-shaking club anthems on everything from hardware modular synthesizers to the Nintendo Game Boy, her compositions and DJ style draw heavily from the languages of cyberfeminism, rave culture, and DIY electronic aesthetics.

Notes on the Mix ///
"My friend MacKenzie Wark once described Techno music in a way that made a lot of sense to me. "I feel like it’s alien to any kind of body at all, so I don’t feel especially weird in it,” she told me when I interviewed her recently for an article about queer and trans experiences of raving. This feeling — of being pleasantly disembodied, guided by rhythmic sounds that bear no resemblance to anything in our increasingly terrifying material reality — has become a central focus of my practice as a queer musician.

Over the last few years, we’ve seen an expanding experimental sound palette begin to infiltrate club music. This is thanks in no small part to producers like SOPHIE, whose unrivaled ability to plumb the frequency spectrum for bizarre and unexpected sounds set the stage for a major shift in pop and dance music.

This mix was an attempt to capture some of most exciting examples of this sea change, focusing specifically on the club and the rave as sites of discovery and healing, generating within us what Wark describes as 'euphoric states of welcome strangeness.'"

Nakamo’s hypnotic sound effortlessly navigates the realms of driving techno, melodic textures, and nostalgic grooves, all while infusing them with a glitchy, futuristic twist.

Nakamo started on her DJ journey in the North London party scene, crafting podcasts during the lockdown for techno collectives based in London.

Since then, this emerging talent has quickly made a strong name for herself, with performances at well-respected venues in the capital, including FOLD, Fabric, Corsica Studios as well as making her European debut at the prestigious Ved Siden Af in Copenhagen last year.

In 2021, Nakamo immersed herself in production and recently released her debut collaborative EP with Ctrltraxx on Leisure World.
