Erklärungsansatz nach Freud
Im vierten Kapitel seiner Abhandlung „Jenseits des Lustprinzips“ (1920) beschreibt Sigmund Freud in der Triebtheorie, dass die Triebe eher konservativer Natur sind. Das bedeutet, dass sie den bestehenden Zustand nicht nur erhalten wollen, sondern auch tendenziell zur Rückkehr in einen früheren Zustand führen: „Ein Trieb wäre also ein dem belebten Organischen innewohnender Drang zu Wiederherstellung eines früheren Zustandes...“ (Fischer Taschenbuch 6394, S.146) Im dritten Kapitel seines Aufsatzes „Das Unbewußte“ (1915) erklärt Freud den Zusammenhang zwischen Trieb und Affekten, wie Gefühle und Empfindungen. Die Triebe sind, seiner Meinung nach, nie „Objekte des Bewußtseins“ (S.82), sondern sie können nur in der Vorstellung bestehen. Sie treten aber durch Affekte zum Vorschein.
Wenn man sich die Relation zwischen Trieben und Gefühlen vor Augen führt, ergibt sich der Gedanke, dass nicht nur die Triebe als konservativ gelten, sondern auch die aus ihnen resultierenden Gefühle einen eher erhaltenden Charakter haben. Deutlich wird dieses bei dem Gefühl der Sehnsucht, die häufig auf Erlebtes, Vergangenes zielt. Die Betroffenen empfinden den Zustand, in dem sie sich jetzt befinden, als schwieriger als den, nach dem sie sich sehnen.
