Persian groove specialists, Sababa 5, are due to return later this month with another essential 45 for the Batov Records Middle Eastern Grooves series. We are excited to share the electrifying B-Side, “Baksheesh”. 

Having cut their teeth playing with the likes of Kutiman and Liraz Charhi, Sababa 5’s knack for Middle Eastern grooves with killer hooks was more than apparent on their “Tokyo Midnight” b/w “Nasnusa” 45 last year, earning them illustrious fans such as Gilles Peterson and acclaimed producer, Rashad Smith.

“Baksheesh” (bribery) begins with a slippery, almost surf-like Middle Eastern guitar motif curtesy of Ilan Smilan, before Amir Sadot’s powerful bassline and Raz Man’s skittering drums deliver the groove. However, the star of the show could well be Eitan Drabkin's gritty organ. Apart from delivering the hook, the organ solos through half the record with near wild abandon.

'Meet Me in Beirut' is Hadi Zeidan's 4th solo album.
Featuring eight tracks and a bonus cut, the album is a musical examination of scenes lived or imagined by the artist in his home city Beirut.

Compositions span from kraut-inspired patterns to garage rock, bellydance noise and a synth maqam solo, in a quest to emancipate Zeidan's work from the normative genres.

The Bike Bloc was a civil disobedience technique developed for the Copenhagen Climate Summit (COP15) by the Laboratory of Insurrectionary Imagination. To participate in the Bike Bloc I organized first Sound Swarm, a bicycle-mounted multi-channel acoustic intervention to inspire, distract or disrupt.  Anyone with a boombox and a bicycle can join the Swarm by tuning into one of the of the FM frequencies emitted by the Queen Bee.
The Queen Bee is taking a holiday this year, you can find her resting in the Disobedient Objects exhibit at the V&A Museum in London. For her stay in the museum I've composed this special soundtrack to compliment the other objects in the room. It flows like a DJ mix, blending and beat matching words, stun grenades, tin pot percussion, and street bands with my own compositions in a series of musical movements. Special thanks go out to the people featured in selected recordings, some of whom are professional musicians, others informally singing or speaking, I hope I've used your voices respectfully. Mystery Oriental Keyboard Abdou El Omari Style

"E Quindi Uscimmo A Riveder Le Stelle" is the very last piece on a six-track release by Frédéric D. Oberland, titled Labyrinth, for his very own NAHAL Recordings, a label whose ownership he shares with Paul Régimbeau (aka Mondkopf). The imprint itself takes its name from a mythological labyrinthian diagram hiding a map of the path to the new world. This is only a third release for the French label, and we can already get a taste of all the eerie things to come. And if you're already a fan of Oberland and his past works as Oiseaux-Tempête, then you're in for a treat...

Dark and noisy, the track begins as a continuation from its predecessor, “La Part Du Feu”, which built up into this distorted explosive opening, the whispers still guiding you deeper inside, as you explore its layers of pitched down percussion, harmonic pipe, and dark energy, with which this multi-instrumentalist courses your path. This downward spiral is not accidental, as Oberland meticulously paints “a vertiginous dive into George Bataille‘s ‘Inner Experience’ and the cave of Dante’s ‘Inferno'”.

"A condensed version of a sound and visual installation created in the basement of the contemporary art space Labanque in Béthune, “Labyrinth” invites us to bear witness to the loss of landmarks and to feel the immersive sense of trance […] In a continuous game of call and response between the intimate and the vast, ‘Labyrinth’ plays with the dynamics, the silence and the musical genres, kneading and pulling the form and structure of the tracks in ever-changing attempts towards transfiguring the chaos."

The album is out this Friday, October 26th, available as a digital release and a beautiful vinyl pressing. Grey Filastine is a multimedia artist dedicated to undermining borders. His music collides electronic beat production with dense layers of voice, concréte sounds, and strings. Pitchfork says it “sounds less like `world’ music and more like music from another world.” Another world is exactly what he aims to create, using sound, video, and dance to express a radically different vision of the possible. 
Filastine’s higher education is limited to driving a taxi in the United States, where he also founded the Infernal Noise Brigade marching band to live score the 1999 revolt against the WTO in Seattle. In 2006 DJ/Rupture released Filastine’s premiere album, Burn It!, which relocated him to Barcelona and launched a decade of releases and tours. His latest AV effort, Abandon, is a video series profiling dances of emancipation, filmed in locations from coal mines in Borneo to office cubicles in America.
Filastine is foremost a performing artist, where sound, image, and ideas are embodied. He is constantly on tour, appearing at festivals like Sonar (ES), Sydney Festival (AU), Downtown Cairo Arts (EG), Decibel (US), Foreign Affairs (DE) and Mutek Tokyo (JP). But Filastine’s work sometimes doesn’t fit any stage or category, his off-piste interventions include an official mixtape for The Act of Killing documentary, a Sound Swarm at the Paris Climate Summit, or a concert in the Calais Jungle migrant camp.
