High Cross Society are a lighthouse of originality in an ocean of also-rans, a coming together of some of the UK's finest live musicians which has resulted in a truly unique album. This is an album that bucks the current trend for disposable pop and brutalist dance tracks, choosing instead to create something more cantabile and palpable. Like all the greatest music it sits outside of time - at once classic and contemporary, this will sound as good in 20 years as it does now.

The project was born when Lazy Habits and Joshua Whitehouse (More Like Trees) joined forces after meeting and writing together at Local Posse sessions - an improvisational night set up by Joe Driscoll. Their initial two songs would quickly became eight and at this point they drafted in multi-instrumentalist mastermind Fjokra to play piano and head up the production elements and preparation for what would now be a full band. A band that includes Local Posse drummer and member of the Joe Driscoll & Sekou Kouyate band - James Breen, Lazy Habits percussionist Steve Abunab and classical double bassist Lachlan Radford (More Like Trees). In the studio they were joined by the 'Habits Horns' (Luke Fabia on trumpet, Ben Thorpe trombone), Fjokra's electric bassist S.E.B, 2X UK beatbox champion Reeps One, and the unbelievably dulcet vocals of Josh Bevan. Top all this off with production taken care of by the award-winning John Hendicott and you have something very special.

The album drops in December with artwork from Yeff (a.k.a. Reeps One). There will be a short tour, details of which will be announced soon. For interview requests, and promo please don't hesitate to get in touch at:

Taken from the Slow Dancing Society 2006 debut album "The Sound of Lights When Dim". The track is also the basis for Antonyme's re-working in the piece 'The Grey Sea And The Long Black Land' from the 2011 EP "We Don't Look Back For Very Long" which sees Antonymes reworking a track from each of Slow Dancing Society’s four albums.

"The Sound of Lights When Dim" is a sumptuous unfolding ride towards a fading horizon. As with Eno’s finest moments and Sylvian’s ambient explorations, this work manages to dissolve its temporal markers and speak about moments removed from time. It talks to the delicious flaws of memory and feeling whilst never sullying itself with literality or simple documentation.

Slow Dancing Society - 'Be There'

‘The Colour Of Long Days’ is a companion track to the recently released We Don’t Look Back For Very Long EP by neo-classical/minimal ambient artist Antonymes.

As with the songs on his new EP We Don’t Look Back For Very Long, ‘The Colour Of Long Days’ is Antonymes’ reworking of music by fellow Hidden Shoal artist Slow Dancing Society. This time ‘The Red Summer Sun’ from Priest Lake Circa ’88 is transformed, the original’s shimmering waves of guitar forming a background against which plaintive piano chords resonate beautifully. Antonymes marries SDS’s glistening atmospheres to his own trademark ambient neo-classical minimalism, creating a completely mesmerising hybrid.

Never Hear Surf Music Again

Taken from new album On by German experimental ambient artist Markus Mehr, the second part of a triptych that also includes recent release In and the forthcoming Off.

On is a continuation of the experimental direction of Markus Mehr’s previous releases, with eight diverse tracks employing samples, field recordings and slathers of Mehr’s trademark distorted drones. This approach is apparent right from opener ‘Gonna Make You Mine’, as scything slashes of sound leap from the speakers. Single ‘Flaming Youth’ counterbalances fragments of static against a gorgeous sleepy-eyed loop of mangled lounge-jazz. A track as expansive and moving as ‘Duck Became Swan’ is followed by brief rhythmic piece ‘Olympia’. This tightrope walk between dizzying samples and exacting digital manipulation is walked with aplomb throughout On’s adventurous and thrilling 45-minute runtime.

On is preceded by In, the first part of the triptych, which comprises two monumental tracks, ‘Komo’ and ‘Ostinato’, each of which clocks in at around 25 minutes, circling around and building upon hypnotic instrumental motifs. The final part of the triptych, Off, released on 24 January 2013, includes the most epic piece yet, ‘Transit’, which clocks in at 49 minutes and will be performed live in collaboration with video artist Stefanie Sixt, who created the video to Mehr’s single ‘Cousteau’.

Markus Mehr - 'Only For A While'

Built around chiming, delayed guitars but never succumbing to their delicious momentum, ‘I’ll Leave A Light On’ sees Slow Dancing Society evolving once more, masterfully adjusting his tonal palette to create a gleaming musical universe. Like a trance breakdown that threatens to build into a booming pay-off but never does, ‘I’ll Leave A Light On’ leaves the listener perpetually gazing into an undersea abyss, suspended agog.

‘I’ll Leave A Light On’ is taken from the forthcoming fifth Slow Dancing Society album Laterna Magica. Underpinned by his gorgeous trademark guitar drift and warm synth wash, yet sparingly propelled by throbbing electronic undercurrents, the tracks on Laterna Magica demonstrate another key progression in the Slow Dancing Society discography, which is becoming one of the essential bodies of work in contemporary ambient music.    

‘I’ll Leave A Light On’ is available for free download from the Hidden Shoal Store (http://store.hiddenshoal.com).
