Following a string of well received outings for the project on his own Black Catalogue label, Monty Luke debuts his Mandingo alias on Matt Edwards' Rekids with the Parallel Universe EP. Firmly establishing himself as a brightly talented producer, DJ and A&R over the past eight years with releases on Planet E and Mothership in addition to his own Detroit-based imprint, the San Francisco native's three tracks offer alternate perspectives on his richly honed sound, drawing on influences from his homes old and new as well as further afield, such as the hybrid electronic sounds of London and Bristol.

Music lovers will indulge and gorge upon the six tracks of the release, whether it’s the drifting melancholy of ‘Teenage Engineering’, the heavy acid flows of ‘Church of Dork’, or the numbingly beautiful ‘Picnic for Players’, there are some stellar moments throughout.

At the beginning of 2016, assured house label FINA Records properly comes of age with a fine 21st release

The man behind the music is a suitably accomplished star in the form of Detroit based Monty Luke, and he serves up four fresh cuts of inviting and human house music. 

Monty, of course, is boss of his own Black Catalogue, a label that is very much at the heart of Detroit’s contemporary scene. Luke himself is a no nonsense producer who, over the last eight years or so, has cooked up fresh and compelling cuts on labels like Planet E, Friction and Dogmatik, and once again he impresses here with four brand new tracks. 

Up first is ‘Message From Mojo,’ a short skit that references the famous radio selector who influenced a multitude of producers from the D. It’s a great bit of found sound atmospherics before ‘Your Love’ gets down to business. This one is a humid deep house cut with airy hi hats and warm streams of bass underpinning sexy whispered vocals. It’s a sure fire floor filler that is full of flavor. 

The fulsome ’Ghost Town’ is another cosy and intimate cut that will kick start any party with its rickety percussive lines and rolling bursts of enveloping bass. Driven yet emotive, it’s an effortless groove from Luke. 

On the flip, ‘Rude Photo’ is more reserved and romantic: again the mood is thoroughly late night and the kicks are smooth supple. Finger clicks make you want to swing those hips and ripples of melody add some all-important colour. 

Lastly, ‘Turnt Out’ (FX Mix) is a much more loose and freeform jam in the style of Theo Parrish. Grinding bass and loose limbed drums tumble below some crisp piano chords and it’s not hard to see this one getting great reactions on any ‘floor. 

With this EP, Luke proves he has great range, and with each of the deliciously diverse tracks he fits in perfectly with FINA’s always forward looking house style.

Almost two years ago we reissued DJ Boom ‘Kinda Kickin’ with an extra Efdemin remix on CURLE-P06D. Because y’all loved it so much, we decided to reissue some more Matthew Herbert deep house goodies. First up is ‘See You On Monday’ from the iconic “Part One” EP – 20 years old but still timeless, and now available digitally for the first time! On remix duties is Linkwood, who released his brilliant “Expressions” album on Firecracker last year. He for one knows how to keep the groove whilst diving deep. The 12" includes limited silk screen artwork - first 300 on transparent vinyl.

At the end of 2015, Mandingo, also known as Monty Luke, released the 'Parallel Universe EP' and now 'Universe II' will get some brand new remixes for 2017. Time for two industry titans to step up for a makeover and we've been counting down the days until release.

Step up Larry Heard, yes Mr Fingers himself and Thomas Melchior under his Melchior Productions Ltd alias. Both edits offer up stark re-imaginings with Heard opting for big, funky basslines and Melchior teching things up with bumping and rolling percussion.

We have the exclusive premiere of Melchior's remix and with an opening that takes you to new intergalactic realms, you'll be in a different galaxy by the time the main crux of the track rears its head.

Very, very good.
