Seeing Myttys perform at H2Ö festival in Turku last summer was a jaw dropping experience. Certainly my favourite set amongst a damn fine line up and I demanded to release something of theirs before they'd even packed away their stuff.

I'd known Heta for years via Olimpia Splendid/Toblerones and Samuli from when he came to play with Clouds. The idea of them as a duo had gold stars written all over it but the results are far beyond my already high expectations. This is one of the best tapes I'll ever put out.

Delving in to the music and attempting to describe what I hear was quite a daunting task and my notes got kinda fun in the process. 
For example Lenak and Street Person made me think of Drunken Fist Kung Fu. Heta's effortlessly cool vocals (and the occasionally perfectly placed scream) echoed by either an imaginary twin sister or the weirdo boy next door. 
Ekkä Ota comes across like an off kilter hip hop soundtrack for a Sci-Fi film. 
Kallupää, Pamsypak and some of the interlude tracks sound, to my ears, beautifully close to the Broadcast and The Focus Group experiments of the "Witch Cults of the Radio Age" album and I hear traces of early Múm stuff in Paksotal. 
Another favourite Foliojakku holds its own unique beauty, quite different from the other tracks. Its machine music with heart and grace which builds and builds until waves of submarine echo's and rapid morse code sequences wash over you. 
Oh and the title track Sloggilukio is the bees knees! 

Certain parts of some of these tunes veer into territory only Finns seem to get away with. I find this hard to explain but there is a certain kind of relaxedness I often hear amongst my favourite Finnish bands which oozes either tons of self confidence or a massive indifference to not fitting into any kind of musical category. Or both. This unpindownable quality is what makes me instinctively trust most of the music which comes my way from there, in whatever form, yet I'm also aware of how blessed I am to have got to know the Fonal/Avarus etc crew so early on. 
The experiments they all create help make that country shine to me and I'm dead proud to finally be able to play a small part in that great history

Sky Girl is a mysteriously unshakeable companion, a deeply melancholic and sentimental journey through folk-pop, new wave and art music micro presses that span 1961-1991. A seemingly disparate suite of selections of forgotten fables by more or less neverknowns, Sky Girl forms a beautifully coherent and utterly sublime whole deftly compiled by French collectors DJ Sundae and Julien Dechery.

From Scott Seskind's adolescent musical road movie to Karen Marks' icy Oz-wave, the charming DIY storytelling of Italian-American go-getter Joe Tossini and the ethereal slow dance themes of Parisian artists Nini Raviolette and Hugo Weris, Sky Girl resonates on a wide spectrum historically, geographically and stylistically. It unites in a singular, longing, almost intangible ambience.

If the names sound wholly unfamiliar that doesn't matter, the nature of the compositions swiftly nurtures an intimacy with these lonely, poignant, openhearted wanderers. Most were available in a very limited capacity at the time of their release, some were never really released at all - Gary Davenport declined to release Sarra after he split with the girl for whom the track is named - years later a friend convinced Davenport to allow him to put 100 copies online to sell and DJ Sundae was quick enough to snare one. Beyond their scarcity, these tracks are bound together by a certain raw beauty that's achievable when music is made and no one is listening.

Sky Girl comprises of fifteen officially licensed songs, a two year international scavenger hunt through long-folded home label operations, the depths of internet forums and traceless acetates. Both compilers are well trained record sleuths - DJ Sundae's labels Hollie and Idle Press have reissued Arthur Russell affiliate Nirosta Steel and DIY relic Pitch, while Julien Dechery previously compiled 'Fire Star', a retrospective on Tamil film composer Ilaiyaraaja, for Bombay Connection.

Released by Noise In My Head offshoot Efficient Space, Sky Girl is enriched with artwork from Perks and Mini mutant Misha Hollenbach and appropriately elegant sleeve notes courtesy of Ivan Smagghe.

The cosmic credentials of France's first psychedelic opera and the genesis of the Gallic galactic concept album. 

Considered by many as the first genuine French conceptual pop album, or indeed the first-ever French psychedelic LP, the evidence gathered in the defence of the artistic provenance of the record that has come to be knowingly referred to as simply Popera Cosmic has always been confided to a small jury. Split between those who have actually heard this almost impossible to find LP (which was virtually disowned by record label CBS in 1969) and those first-hand witnesses whose memories even survived the psychotropic era. It is fair to say that the body of fragile facts has since been blurred, stirred, shaken, taken and mistaken enough to leave a cosmic cocktail of contradiction strong enough to corrupt any junky judge willing to return to the bench after a forty-year liquid lunch break. In the words of album arranger and musical co-conspirator, the legendary Guy Skornik: "Popera Cosmic was a big project!  But we worked a lot - and then we smoked a lot." The facts have become "enhanced". Popera Cosmic continues to have wide acclaim in a narrow chasm, but even before the needle drops into the microgroove, the cosmic credentials of this buried treasure from the post yé-yé era are enough to earn the album also known as Les Esclaves (The Slaves) its place as the genuine jump-off point for virtually everything "psychedelic" or "conceptual" that followed in France. In the right context the Popera Cosmic troupe and their freak-folio family tree assembles the first architects of Gallic intergalactica and this album is their blueprint, hymn sheet and mythical manifesto combined. The jury is out... FAR OUT!

Perhaps one of the most unique and unlikely exponents of the highly collectible genres of ambient electronics, experimental tape-music and PINA (Private Issue New Age) this English born Jamaican raised sound designer, artist and existentialist furrowed his own ublinkered path through lesser chartered electronic fields for many moons before eventually teaming up with Bill Laswell (with Material) and Daevid Allen in New York to bring self-taught synthesis to Gong during their most oblique periods.
