Panic Stations

It was hard to choose a first single, but releasing ‘cute as hell’ on Valentine’s Day felt right. It’s an anti-commercial ode to fancying somebody and having no idea what’s going on in their head. It’s also about how scary love is, because you have to give up control and surrender yourself to this tidal wave of impulsive emotion. When we were working on the album, ‘cute as hell’ was literally the last song we wrote; the lyrics are playfully ironic and also have a constant kind of manic energy that definitely stems from the deep, restless depths of the pandemic

Memory Girl released on Fortress Sounds via AWAL 5th April 2022. 

This anthemic single serves as the album's title track and was written after a hugely successful call-out campaign for her fan's memories & nostalgia to use as inspiration for the song.  

This creates a beautiful contrast to the album which was written about Natalie's childhood & adulthood experiences.

“I’m always looking for ways to challenge myself as an artist and songwriter. Sometimes that curveball move which puts you outside of your comfort zone leads to an amazing discovery, and I love experiencing that. 

Because Memory Girl (the album) is so rooted in my own story and memories, I wanted to ask my fans for theirs - for inspiration, for something more that felt exciting and inclusive. 

What I received from them was above and beyond my initial expectation, I was truly in awe of some of them. The one that resonated with me the most was a man’s story about growing up with his twin sister, growing apart, growing together again through life. 

I really connected with it because it made me think of my own family, parents, grandparents - how they were when they were young and travelling through life in their own stories, growing up. It also felt like a continuation of the album - which has themes of mirroring, and twin imagery.  I was so connected to it that when I came to write the song it made me very emotional.

There is real weight attached to creating work around someone else’s story, and I wanted to celebrate and respect that. I’m really proud of the song and production.”

Following their critically acclaimed debut EP ‘You’re Welcome’, Modern Guilt have kicked off 2022 in style by announcing the release of brand new single ‘Joy Control’.

Hailed by tastemakers including John Kennedy (Radio X), praised by This Feeling as one of the ‘Best New Bands’, and championed by the likes of Bobby Gillespie (Primal Scream), Shell Zenner (BBC Radio / Amazing Radio) and Rowena Alice (BBC Radio / Boogaloo Radio / Islington Radio), Modern Guilt “are re-igniting and modernising their era and genre influences in a strong flame of colour” (Listen To Discover).

‘Joy Control’ is the band’s first release following last year’s ‘You’re Welcome’ EP. Produced by long-term collaborator Mikey Buckley, the new single sits somewhere between the sounds of Motown and the New Wave scene of 1970’s New York City. While lyrically it depicts the frustrations of watching an individual, for a multitude of reasons, choose not to become someone you thought they could be.

‘Joy Control’ will be released digitally on Friday 25th February and will be accompanied by an official visualiser.

Brimming with youthful exuberance, it marries the most infectious elements of The Libertines, Vampire Weekend, Tom Grennan and Ten Tonnes, weaving assured guitar riffs with punchy percussion throughout its almost 3 minutes.

Speaking about the song Harvey says, “‘For The Love Of It’ is a statement about how music should be created and played … for the love of it. Not following a trend, being able to connect with others, not forcing the art for the primary motive of money. The production portrays this. Playful melodies, groups of chanting teens, rough around the edges as a whole - a song to shout out together with your mates.  My painting of why I make music for the love of it.’’

The new single also comes after recently being snapped up by Paradigm booking agency for live shows. Now represented by Alex Hardee (Liam Gallagher, Sia, Clean Bandit), Harvey will play a headline show in London on 17th March at the prestigious Notting Hill Arts Club. 

Freshly tipped by This Feeling and XS Manchester as One To Watch in 2022, 'For The Love Of It' is another taste of what's to come from the uber talented singer-songwriter’s debut EP, due for release this spring.  Bringing together raw lyrical work with driving instrumentation, it effortlessly showcases why the 20 year old is onto such big things.

Hailing from Portsmouth, Harvey had already seen a remarkable ascent even before releasing music officially -  being tipped and playlisted by BT Sport and playing the Isle of Wight Festival for This Feeling last year.

More Information on Harvey Jay Dodgson

Harvey Jay Dodgson started playing the guitar at the age of 7 and by 9 years of age had written his first piece of music. His early inspiration came after being introduced by older brother Neil to the music of Peggy Lee, Billie Holiday and the free-flowing vocal melodies of Ella Fitzgerald and Ray Charles. He says, "It instantly opened my eyes (or should I say ‘ears’) to a completely different sound of music." It was discovering the jazz-influenced artists, King Krule and Cosmo Pyke who inspired him to experiment further and he was soon ready to create his own music. 

 Tipped by BT TV and Scotts Menswear as ‘One to Watch 2021’ He has recently performed at the IOW Festival. He will be releasing his debut fully produced EP in 2022.
