Lars Bartkuhn - co-founder of influential Frankfurt deep house label Needs Music - seems to have split his brain right down the middle. The Nomad EP — his latest outing on Phonica-related imprint, Utopia — is quite the open market stall: jazz fusion, ambient dabblings and Afro-Caribbean flavours make for a sumptuous listen.

It's a brave and all-encompassing approach from the man who recently stepped out on Neroli Records with the endearing Music for The Golden Age. One which is highlighted most accurately on the the title track. At its zenith, the "Nomad (Full Experience)" soars between Jazzanova-esque rhythms; emotive and considerably light on its toes. Those guitar twangs are plucked from the ripe summer months, making this a strong shoe-in for best background music as you lap up the August rays.

It's out way before that though; early May to be precise. Pre-order it while spring is still springing.

Three years on from the release of Rhys Adams aka YesKing's 'Re-Record… Not Fade Away', we are delighted to live up to the album's title by presenting two previously unheard remixes of standout tracks 'Hardground' and 'Overproof'.
Featuring heart-stopping vocals by Mel Uye-Parker & Rioghnach Connolly, 'Hardground' was the album's lead single and it's easy to see why. Bittersweet, understated atmospheres call to mind vintage Massive Attack and Portishead, while Rhys's deft arrangement builds the track into a horn and drum-laden epic. Providing a vintage version in their own unique style, legends in their own bath-time Crazy P are first up on remix duties. Surely one of the best live acts on the planet right now, the UK outfit's rework is full of funky guitar licks, classic piano chords and live percussion, creating a disco-crossover anthem of sizeable proportions. Staying in the disco/house arena, engineer and producer O. De Lanzac turns in a silky-smooth version, with eerie chords underpinned by a rock-solid bassline, calling to mind the eclectic, soulful brilliance of her 2012 BBE debut ‘Uncut’. 
Displaying an affectionate tip-of-the-hat to 'Ghost Town' by The Specials, 'Overproof' is surely one of the best loved and most-played cuts on 'Re-Record… Not Fade Away'. DJ and edit maestro Sam Redmore raises the tempo a little whist somehow smoothing the track out at the same time, retaining the blissful dubbed-out vibe of the original version. Listen to Sam's subtle retouch of 'Overproof' and it's clear to see why the Birmingham native can count Craig Charles and Gilles Peterson among his ever-growing number of fans.

More good value goodness from the Editorial label, one of the few re-edit focused outfits that manage to retain a high level of consistency. The Funk District kicks things off with a fine re-arrangement of an organ and electric piano-focused chunk of sweaty dancefloor soul ("An Evening With El Diablo"), before Matt Hughes gets busy with some elastic slap bass on flash-fried disco-funk revision "Get Down". Elsewhere, Label regulars Ed Wizard & Disco Double Dee dip the tempo on the slow and seductive "Slippin", the Owl stomps his way through the P-funk style heaviness of "Funky Feelin" and Cody Currie offers up a hazy sample-house cut rich in jazzy flourishes and warm electric piano chords.

Closing set de Guillermo M. Ferrando (The Ballroom) para San Junipero 1979,  una sesión organizada por El Cuerpo del Disco y Vicente Bustillo en la Sala El Sol.

Una selección para celebrar la música disco producida en el mismo año en el que muchos la dieron por muerta, empezando por el Dj de rock n' roll Steve Dahl y su infamous Disco Demolition Night en el estadio Comiskey Park de Chicago.

Pero la música disco estaba lejos de morir. Tras varios años de sobreexposición comenzó su regreso al underground, donde pronto mutaría en nuevos géneros y estilos como el disco not disco, el cosmic, el italo disco o el Hi-NRG.

Closing set by Guillermo M. Ferrando (The Ballroom) for San Junipero 1979, a club session organized by El Cuerpo del Disco and Vicente Bustillo in Sala El Sol. 

A selection that celebrates disco music in the same year that many took it for dead, starting with rock n' roll Dj Steve Dahl and his infamous Disco Demolition Night at the Comiskey Park Stadium in Chicago.

But disco was far from being dead. After several years of overexposure it began its return to underground, where it soon mutated into new genres and styles like disco not disco, cosmic, italo disco or Hi-NRG.

Leading Mexican label Duro welcome countryman Rigopolar for four of his fantastically expansive and expressive disco tunes.

The now US based Rigopolar is a cosmic explorer and space sound aficionado with credits on the likes of Tom Tom Disco dating back five or so years. His mix of disco and techno has taken him to gigs round the world, podcasts for Soma and remixes on the likes of Beat is Murder.

Brilliant opener ‘Black Mantis’ is a spooky cut with a mysterious lead that takes you into a mystic forest. The drums move things on as sci-fi sounds and withering synths add details to this most evocative musical story. ‘Espiral’ is a colourful, psychedelic scandi-disco classic with looping arps taking you ever further into the stars. Its craftsmanship is second to none as it draws you deeper and deeper in.

The scintillating ‘Time’ is another lush cut with plenty of glistening and glowing synths. Always ascending through the mix, they lift your spirits and hands in equal measure while the deeper drums keep your feet moving. Last of all is ‘Crashes’, a slower and more melancholic track that is paired back to a steamy vocal and rolling drums. A poignant one-finger melody brings tenderness to this brilliantly introspective closer.

This is an exceptional trip though timeless disco with a difference.

Barry&Gibbs are Quentin and Fred. They have been friends for over 10 years now and share that same passion for disco and funk music. As well as their super-cool music productions, they have been working on many other projects, such as launching their DAB+ radio station, “Playloud” in North France. 
In 2016, this talented duo decided to start their own “disco thing” in their hometown Lilles ,France where they showcased their very own tracks to the people that came to party. Barry & Gibbs also launched their own night, “Disconnect” in Lille this year.

Inspired by legends such as Larry Levan, Jellybean Benitez, Joey Negro, Dimitri from Paris, this becomes very apparent when you listen to these guys re-edits. Think funky, think classic disco tracks with the magical touch that Barry & Gibbs are well known for, giving their edits a super funky, fresh, edgy sound.They have made some absolutely stunning reworks of Sister Sledge, Michael Jackson, Cerrone, Madonna, The Trammps All are available for free download on their soundcloud page and all have such a star quality to them.

Barry & Gibbs are taking Traxsource by storm right now. Both of their original releases reached N°1 on the Nu-Disco chart. “Let Her Dance” also peaked at No.2 of the General Top Charts in October 2018 and is still top 5 right now.
