"If I Were a Blackbird" is a timeless, classic Nova Scotia folk song about forbidden love between a young maiden and a sailor re-imagined by Sue McBride. This beloved folk song of Nova Scotia was collected by Helen Creighton from the Armstrong twins, Alister and Judson, around 1950 in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. It appears to have originated in Ireland. In this variant of  the folk song, Sue pushes the boundaries of traditional folk music in instrumentation with mainly computer generated instruments and effects other than piano and tin whistle to create a melancholy atmosphere.

Verse 1:
I am a young maiden, a maiden so fair
Fell in love with a sailor, a young sailor boy
And we courted in secret,  by night and by day
'Til at length that young sailor, oh he sailed far away.

A song I've grown up with but always thought deserved a softer approach than the usual raucous 'pub song' it is usually portrayed as. Since “Particle Guitar” over a year ago, Steve and I have written and performed many new songs together.  And we’ve formed a new band called “Korima” which will soon release its debut EP: “Into Your World”.
 
Along the way, as Korima, we’ve created some short songs.  Not excerpts but, rather, complete pieces to be enjoyed briefly on their own - or as connectors exploring the relationships between songs.

When I first heard this I instantly picked up a  blusey mid eastern flavour to it and decided to pick up on that theme. I used Pauls track "Remember" in it's entirety with no edits to do some post production work around it, picking up on that eastern vibe I was getting !! I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did making it.

Folk number from way back merging a few concepts... Lammas is an August harvest festival and Martinmas a November cattle-slaughtering and salting-down for winter one. Plough Monday celebrates the burying of a corn 'dolly' made from the last harvest sheaf to 'embody' the corn spirit and provide a winter refuge prior to its summer rebirth. Kine is an old word for cattle. How in touch with the land were rural folk from centuries past, and how disconnected we seem today in our little plastic techno-bubbles.🙄My lyrics, Mr. L's music/vocals.
