And now for our next trick.... we dipped into the Stax catalog for a Memphis Funk-flavored remix of one our favorite West Coast Gangster Rap tracks. A horn-heavy affair with a big drum break and bassline. The perfect soundtrack for winding down your Summer!

BLD resident Ste Hendry (aka Esteban) is in the resident’s booth for this one, laying down some serious heat to warm you up for our very special guest this week, Iry Sabir!

Iry has been DJing since 2003 where he started playing Funky House music in bars & clubs in West Yorkshire. He then started to mix up his styles which covered Soulful to Deep House using only Vinyl. After a decade out concentrating on bringing up his family, he played at his close friends wedding last year where he played alongside the head honcho of Incognito, Bluey. Since then he's decided to pick up the records & start mixing again, and we're delighted to showcase his talents for the second hour. RSW was one of those bands I was first turned unto in the Industrial age, kids this is before raves when clubs played stuff like The Cure, Joy Division and "Biting My Nails" was one of those songs they would play. Anyway, I loved "Biting My Nails" and soon was buying cassettes from RSW and eventually ran into the "In Dub" album. My DJ friend Greg Om turned me unto this album and I loved the stripped down versions and the break-beats. It was truly influential into me making breaks later. For my Re-Jam, I cut it up a bit, added more drums and flipped it to fit my LNW style a bit. Hope you dig it.

Written in 1969 in Roma by Chico Buarque and Toquinho, “Samba de Orly,” is a beautiful exile song. A melancholic message addressed by a Brazilian forced to flee to Europe, to a friend lucky enough to go back home to Rio. 
It's in fact an auto-biographic story in a heavy political context: in early 1969, under aggressive scrutiny by an increasingly repressive Brazilian dictatorship, Chico Buarque took advantage of a concert tour in Italy with Toquinho to effectively exile himself there temporarily with his wife. 
When Toquinho and Chico reviewed the final version of the song, their friend Vinicius De Moraes advised them to make the lyrics harsher and more clearly political to reflect the pain of life in exile. But Brazilian censorship refused the changes, and the song was released in Brazil with their original milder lyrics. Song title refers to Paris's Orly, as it was well known to the Brazilian audience, contrary to Roma's Fiumicino airport.

Fast forward to today, and I can't help thinking about Brazil current situation and regime, which evokes in several ways this dark dictatorship era. Let's hope all the wonderful artists in the country will not be forced to exile themselves as well. Here's my groovy take of the song, as a little hint of love and support to all of them :)
