CATLETTSBURG – A man was arrested on Tuesday following a police chase resulted in a collision on Blackburn Avenue.

Austin Bates, 25, of Greenup was arrested by the Catlettsburg Police Department after authorities alleged he fled from authorities during an attempted traffic stop.

Police said the incident started when the driver of a red Chevrolet Cavalier failed to stop at a stop sign at 10 and Center in Catlettsburg. The motorist was pursued by an officer with the Catlettsburg Police Department. The fleeing driver then pulled into traffic, with cars having to “stop or slow down to avoid a collision,” according to a police report. It was at this point authorities say the fleeing motorist accelerated their vehicle onto Blackburn, nearly striking two vehicles. The fleeing vehicle then crashed into a telephone light pole near Hunt Street.

Authorities say that Bates had two passengers with him at the time, and the rear seat passenger was taken to King’s Daughters Medical Center for an injury to her left ankle.

Bates consented to a drug test after authorities said beer cans and one pint of whiskey were found in the vehicle.

Bates is currently being detained at the Boyd County Detention Center, and was arraigned on Wednesday on the charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence, 2nd degree fleeing or evading police, disregarding a stop sign, and wanton endangerment in the first degree.

Authorities arrested Bates and reported he “placed his two passengers and approximately five vehicles and the office in substantial risk of injury or death.”
