Music inspired by the tallest oak tree on the North American continent — the Henley Oak — and the general epic-ness of the place it calls home, the Round Valley of Mendocino County in Nor—Cal.

White Blanket: Section II

World Premiere and Commissioned by American Composers Orchestra at Jazz at Lincoln Center on April 9, 2015, Conductor George Manahan

Sanctum, for orchestra and recorded sound, explores the sound of improvisation in Holiness-preaching traditions. I draw inspiration from recorded sermons, The Praying Slave Lady by Pastor Shirley Caesar, The Eagle Stirs His Nest by Reverend C. L. Franklin, and Reverend Charles Albert Tindley’s hymn, Stand By Me. Included are the voices of Marlene Pinnock and of activists in Ferguson, Missouri from 2014. Sanctum is my artistic response to recent events of police brutality. By employing techniques of layered repetition, rhythmic intensity, sounds of moaning and whooping, and voices of the past and present, Sanctum invokes solace found in the midst of persecution and tribulation.


Sanctum was commissioned and premiered by American Composers Orchestra with the generous support of The Jerome Foundation and The Peter Heller Fund.

Cages (2013)

Inspired by some of my favorite licks that Charles Mingus ever wrote, this solo baritone saxophone piece is meant to swing hard. 

Mingus wrote and performed some of the most influential jazz music in our history, and his colossal library of repertoire spans an enormous breadth and depth of emotions. The passion, the rage, the soul, the fiery energy. Mingus was a man possessed. This piece serves to be my own small reflection in tribute to the "Angry Man of Jazz."

Live world premiere performed by the composer herself, Shelley Washington, in November of 2016.

From each angle
Impenetrable- as if the
bolts
of fabric clothing their frames,
a cotton iron, steel-
which formed the mightiest wall of both
Blossoming and full figures
was able to push forward
fueled by the steam of their desire and
the embers of their hate;
The Workers,
plowing forward in one movement
the waves in their wake
throttling the persistent trials of time,
knew the war they waged-
with white wears woven
signaling a faux peace, yet shrouding truth-
For their resolve was patient-
A lifetime battle for an infinite war.

"Paper Pianos" is a portrait piece about Milad Yousufi, a young refugee from Kabul, Afghanistan, whose life was threatened by the Taliban for pursuing music. According to the Taliban, music is forbidden in Islam. "You are not a kid" is the first movement of a larger work sharing Milad's incredible life story. It focuses primarily on his childhood during the civil war and integrates a prerecorded backing track excerpted from Mary's interview with him. This piece is dedicated to Milad, who despite the challenges this world has presented him with, carries an inspiring amount of optimism and joy for humanity.

Bubblegum Grass Peppermint Field

So many late evenings of mine have been spent on subway platforms, desperately waiting for a local train to take me home. It only took a few months of being a New Yorker to become desensitized to the constant motion and noise of subway stations (and almost every corner of New York, for that matter), but I could never escape the anxiousness of being on a platform where nearly nothing was happening; when there was no train coming or going, not another person in sight, and nothing to give me any tangible perception of time.

Perhaps enough of these occasions led me to create this piece; where the tension is not derived from any sort of overstimulation, but rather not enough.
