Tuqoos, Julmuds debut album release is a 15 track project rooted in heavy beats that bend space and time to subvert forms of enclosure. The sounds have an almost granular detailed texture while maintaining a gripping rhythmic flow via dense bass lines and a bitter sweetness in the melodies, blurring the lines between hanging on a street corner, at a protest or in a club. Produced in Ramallah - Palestine, Tuqoos pushes up against otherwise inaccessible space, resisting the conditions of a body in capture through sounds that morph, slip through and create breaks in times and spaces that remain occupied.

Moqawama (مقاومة), "resistance."

Amidst the ongoing genocide against the people of Gaza - having now surpassed the 100-day mark, and with deep mourning for the loss of over 30,000 Palestinians, over 10,000 of those being children - I felt a profound need to contribute in some way. This drive led me to start this fundraising project and, with the invaluable help of everyone involved, we've crafted this Various Artists compilation as a creative expression of solidarity and support for Palestine.

We reached out to friends and fellow artists from five different parts of the world (Egypt, Poland, Greece, China, Saudi Arabia), seeking their support in contributing their unique sounds to this project. MOQAWAMA V.A. has evolved into a kaleidoscope of electronic subgenres, spanning from Shaabi to experimental techno, sound design and drill.

~PROCEEDS~
The vast majority of humanitarian aid is unfortunately not reaching Gaza. The only scenario in which donations can be helpful and have an impact is through e-SIM purchases, for which there is currently a huge demand, due to the very frequent telecommunications blackouts imposed by "Israel".
Purchasing e-SIMs is literally life saving, as it allows people within Gaza to connect to the outside, to communicate with their families and also to show what's happening within Gaza.

We'll be using all proceeds from this release to purchase as many e-SIMs as possible and send them to gazaesims@gmail.com. This effort is run by Mirna El Helbawi, an Egyptian writer and journalist. You can find more information on gazaesims.com or follow @ Mirna_elhelbawi on X/Twitter.

Five years after the first instalment, ZULI revives his Swag Lee alias for a second pass at the Habibi Loops premise, leaning a little closer to “beats” without losing any of the mischief or extremity.

Working exclusively from scuffed, low-bitrate MP3 rips of Egyptian funk-and-jazz-inflected pop, Swag Lee fillets tiny inflection-points and holds them under a microscope. Instead of building tracks in the usual sense, the tape chains together sharp-edged loops, jagged edits, stop-start lurches and tiny breaths of swing frozen and reframed. Cut and paste is the operating logic, groove the fixation.

Threaded between the beats are short comic interludes lifted from Arabic reels and Facebook detritus, tiny sketches of Egyptian pop culture that interrupt the flow and flip the frame mid-tape. Where Vol. 1 leaned into abstraction, this one uses the same vandal energy to chase rhythm and body-feel, a crooked homage rerouted through ZULI’s experimental reflexes. Raw source, reckless surgery, and the loop treated as a unit of memory and mischief.

No poem is intended for the reader, no picture for the beholder, no symphony for the listener.

You can't see it because of the angle with which I took the shot, aiming down, but beyond those blocks is the sea.  To the left is the Mediterranean, to the right is the Atlantic Ocean.  No it's not Gibraltar, but a little bit further West. ... Actually I checked recently and it is further North more than West, I thought I was facing South when in fact I probably was facing the Atlantic ocean, which is why I suppose the waves were of a decent size where we were.
