"On their 3rd album, the danish duo explores their kosmische take on synthwave further. Videodrones’s first two albums tapped into short arabesque-like pieces, playing out like cues in a film. Atavistic Future sees them broadening out, with the two main tracks on the album clocking in at 8 and almost 12 minutes respectively. And it’s not only in the track lengths that Videodrones are reaching beyond: There is a wider range of influences and nods - from the Phillip Glass Koyaanisqatsi-repetitions of Church to the Suzanne Ciani Buchla-bursts of on the title track. It’s the seamlessly weaved together influences, that makes Atavistic Future tick. 
The album is based around improvisation and repetition, allowing ideas to drift and emerge - catching fire at random. As always, most of the material were captured during a single prolonged day & night of jamming at Jonas Munk’s studio, digging into his expansive collection of synthesizers. The pieces were then folded and re-assembed by Jakob Skøtt - maintaining the improvised spirit, where synths and float out of tune and clock, yet intricately detailed and ever changing - bringing forth the best of both studio-production and jagged improvisation."

Jane Weaver’s new ambient ensemble Fenella take on Marcell Jankovic’s 1981 animated fantasy epic ‘Fehérlófia’ out 1st November

‘Fenella’ is the latest project from Jane Weaver - musical polymath and one of the most respected electronic composers of recent times. Having already released three critically-acclaimed LP’s within the last five years Weaver’s creativity continues to expand ever further into the (modern) kosmos with this reimagined soundtrack to Marcell Jankovics’ cult animation Fehérlófia.
 
Released in 1981, Fehérlófia is a remarkable animation based in ancient folklore with a narrative culled from mythical tales of the Scythans, Huns and Avars. Weaver’s richly emotional and psychedelic music offers a perfect contemporary dialogue with Jankovics’ astonishing visual aesthetic. A mixture of ambient textures, menacing drones and spine-tingling vocals combine to create a lavish soundscape saturated with hypnotic moods and cinematic atmosphere.
 
Weaver’s long-term bandmates Peter Philipson and Raz Ullah decamped to a remote cottage on the Applecross Peninsula in north west Scotland to commence recording on the initial album sessions, making masterful use of synthesizers and heavily processed guitars to create evocative new sound-worlds for Jancovics’ imagery. Further overdubs and vocal manipulations were committed to tape at Eve Studios near Manchester, a haven for vintage analogue recording equipment and the same environment from which ‘The Silver Globe’, ‘Modern Kosmology’ and ‘Loops In The Secret Society’ albums sprung forth.

A continuation of the Fire Records re-imagined score series, Fenella’s self-titled release is out 1st November on limited edition ink spot vinyl and crystal clear LP.

Fenella - Bright Curse

Grischa Lichtenberger’s music stands for broken rhythms, for high-density manipulations that emphasize the digital and fractal nature of its working process. A mindset that grew closer to contemporary jazz in recent years. Since free jazz, this genre also sought to overcome musical standards and looked for possibilities of an individual artistic expression. Within this context, the collaboration between Lichtenberger and jazz saxophonist Philipp Gropper as well as the resulting album are documents of this development. It also offers both musicians the opportunity to expand their familiar environment by breaking with expectations.
The foundation for »re: phgrp« were pieces from the album »Consequences« by Philipp Gropper’s band PHILM which Lichtenberger reinterpreted without giving up their original character. He rather looked for figures, subjects and reference points in the compositions to reflect and condense them. As »Consequences« was recorded with all the instruments in one room at the same time (like a classical jazz recording from the 1950ies), the extraction of individual instruments was a challenge which Lichtenberger took up with shifts, distortions and rearrangements of the original temporality of the material. Except for a few synthesizer sounds and an additional piano recording, he remained largely true to the source material, even though the tracks develop their own unique voice throughout the album.
»Re: phgrp (reworking ›consequences‹ by philipp gropper’s philm)« will be released in cooperation with Whyplayjazz in a limited edition of 500 CDs on October 25, 2019. The cover was screen printed and shows a compositional notation by Grischa Lichtenberger. The album marks the beginning of an encounter between Lichtenberger and Gropper that promises to continue in joint improvisational concert situations and further recordings in the future.

Despite punk’s initial revolutionary fervour, its prime originators soon bowed to same static paths leading to chart hits and financial success which had lingered since the advent of The Beatles - faux rebellion, coordinated stage wear, “heartfelt” performances . . .

The Prefects? Not too bothered. Singer Robert Lloyd made self-effacing jokes and shaved on stage, band members came and went quickly, non-members contributed tunes. No one even remembers who started the band.

In punk’s early days, The Prefects played around Birmingham, blagged their way onto The Clash’s White Riot tour when The Jam couldn’t hack it, toured with The Buzzcocks, and shared bills with Ultravox, The Fall, Generation X, and The Damned.

Despite tours and music press notoriety, the band was not once approached by even the sketchiest of labels. Nor did they go looking. Originally taken by the energy he heard in The Ramones, singer Robert Lloyd soon saw limitations in that approach and, as he puts it, “. . . simply realised I enjoyed Faust and Beefheart more.” What passions the band members shared soon dissipated. Near the end, they were asked to record a session for John Peel. Over the next few months, there were three more shows, a quick follow-up second Peel session, a final hometown performance . . . and that was it. They never even managed a demo.

‘Going Through The Motions’ is the first full-length vinyl collection of their studio recordings.

Although a few tunes don’t stray from the general sounds of their time, there’s innovation and humour here. ‘Escort Girls’ may be the first recorded forerunner of American hardcore. ‘The Bristol Road Leads To Dachau’ hints at Joy Division’s later The Atrocity Exhibition. Taking it a step farther than Alternative TV’s ‘How Much Longer’ with its deliberate dirge, ‘Going Through The Motions’, mocks punk expectation against an almost psychedelic haze. ‘Total Luck’ bears the early evidence of Lloyd’s lone-man confessional style, and ‘Barbarella’s’ is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to their most-played local venue.

Versions of The Modern Lovers’ She Cracked and the Prefects’ original 625 Lines were recorded live by Virgin on the final two nights of Manchester’s Electric Circus and later issued as a compilation with tracks by The Fall, The Buzzcocks, Joy Division and others. The Prefects refused release of their material, believing their first outing should be a studio recording, not a live track or two on a compilation.

During the White Riot tour, members of Subway Sect, The Slits and The Prefects joined in on a live encore loosely based on Velvet Underground’s Sister Ray. Incredibly difficult to listen to, the song was bootlegged widely before eventually appearing on The Slits’ 1980 album of early demos in a 5’20” version called “No More Rock And Roll For You”. Twenty years later, Vic Godard of Subway Sect edited a minute from the recording and released it on his Twenty Odd Years compilation. Two decades later, The Prefects have edited more than a minute from it and retitled it White Riot Tour. In another twenty years, it is hoped that the prolonged rite of ritual shortening of this song will leave no trace of it at all. For the record, it’s Robert Lloyd going “wooo-ooo” in the background, in what he says was an attempt to mimic the organ part from Sister Ray, which, listeners may note, is no longer being played.

This is the opening salvo in the telling of Robert Lloyd’s career, which will include King Rocker: A film about Robert Lloyd & The Nightingales, by comedian and writer Stewart Lee, director Michael Cumming and Fire Films’ James Nicholls.

‘Going Through The Motions’ will be available on vinyl via new label Call Of The Void on 29th November 2019.
