Balance Music: We are pleased to say that our Balance Community winner for the month of October, Firesnake aka Ben Brewis, delivered on all fronts with his superb Dark FM mix.

With this mix Ben moves the focus away from 4/4 beats into more broken beat territory, but really, that is just semantics as the whole mix is imbued with groove that is just irresistible. Inspired by the early rave and hardcore years, this mix really is a love letter to where it all began for Brewis: “This is a mixtape vibe inspired by my ’90s local pirate radio station Dark FM, but instead of jungle and hardcore this mix showcases a new generation of beats, breaks & deep house that have those sound’s DNA.” explains Brewis, “It’s the sound of now; global producers reconnecting with the UK’s vibrant rave roots.” 

If you’re not a fan of the early rave and hardcore scene don’t be fooled into thinking this is a full on mix of jungle, drum n bass and breaks, as this mix is so much more. He effortlessly builds the mix from ambient interludes to chilled deep house that glides into underground bass music and more energetic breaks moments via stomping techno and more. There is a flow to proceedings that makes this one smooth listen, and at points the euphoria levels are cranked to 11.

A soundtrack to a forthcoming publication; The Hidden Sun. Taking influence from the British countryside, natural paganism and ancient mysticism... this mix is the accompaniment to 'an armchair treasure hunt' book that will be released in late 2017/early 2018 through Firesnake Studio.

The sounds are designed to conjure up a sense of The English countryside; ancient, otherworldly and a magical place of myth and legend.

The Hidden Sun

The Flight Lounge, 9 September 2000 @ Hobson's Choice, Banbury, UK. 

The first live dj gig under the Firesnake name, in the balmy summer of 2000 a few weeks after bringing some tunes back from Ibiza.

An amazing night put together by promoter and designer James Heath, the place was rocking from start to finish, smiling faces everywhere. 

The main room was house, progressive and hard house, with a second room for D&B, hip hop and breaks. At the time it was the best attended opening night in the venue's long and respected history. 
This is the 2002 recreation from the mix that had the place going bonkers. 

At the time I was playing the trancey edge of progressive house. Since that night my sounds have changed so much, going deeply electronic and atmospheric over the past 20 years.

The journey continues into Arcadia; said to be man's self-realised paradise on Earth, an otherworldly garden of exotic plants, architecture and symbolic secrecy looked over by the ancient planetary gods.
London has it's own claim to an intended Arcadia based around the Thames area of Richmond, Kingston, Kew and Hampton Court (featured on the mix artwork). 

The mix keeps all the usual Path of Souls elements of deep electronic grooves and unusual sounds that get into your mind. The ambient washes are cut to a minimum and in comes a natural tribal & breaks vibe that builds to a throbbing techno finale. 

The mix starts from Synkro and Basti Grub's bass-heavy ethnic musings into ethereal bells and beats courtesy of Pantha Du Prince and Chymera, before delving into old skool FSOL and Orbital. Then the trance takes you under; SCB's Scuba remix and the amazing Gavid Duetta on LSD from Scarlet Ibis making sure the mind has melted. It all ends with thumping low-slung techno courtesy of the masters The Black Dog.

The Forest of Light is the latest chapter in the 22 year old Path of Souls Collection. An extended mix based in the same sonic landscape of the first section of The River Of Four Ways. Shamanic trance rhythms, tribal beats and ambient textures from visionary producers.
