@DemiRiquisimo is returning to his in-house imprint, Semi Delicious, with his second EP and ready to pick up where he left off with the aptly titled ‘Mysterious EP’, dropping today (3rd May 2019). The only vinyl release imprint saw his first EP lock in huge support from names like Optimo, Rex The Dog, Horse Meat Disco, Theo Kottis, Skream, Loods, Auntie Flo, Simian Mobile Disco and Tensnake, and even a coveted premiere on BBC Radio 1 by Pete Tong himself, while this one did not fail to get the attention of the infamous BBC1 “Danny Howard” claiming that he knew little about Demi but quite literally he would have played all the four tracks after receiving this EP in his inbox.

Opening with Pa De Chevaux, the chugging Bootsy Collins-style topline bass works in harmony with the vocal sample to create something so deliciously funky that you’ll still be moving long after the track ends. Fans of A Lifetime On The Hips are in for a treat on A2 as Certified revives the former’s stomping 4/4 kick and delivers one of the naughtiest modulated acid-arp basslines to ever grace the dancefloor. Enter lush chords, dreamy vocal sampling and wonderfully pacey hi-hats, and you’ve got one of the EP’s strongest tracks.

On the B-side, the quality doesn’t let up and you’re reminded that each track could easily be the lead. The title track, Mysterious, is a clear follow-up to Sarong Song with the perfect combination of acid basslines, 808 kicks and an array of live strings, organs, and horns mixed in to pack plenty of punch. Tagine Machine leads with an afro-centric percussive intro before delving into the depths of tough, synth-laden electro-disco. Inspired by a trip to Morocco and the sights and sounds that the souks of Marrakesh are filled with, Tagine Machine reflects the breadth of Demi’s musical inspiration. Bringing together elements of acid, disco, house and everything in-between, Demi Riquísimo once again demonstrates why he’s quickly becoming one of the most exciting talents on the scene.

A Tribute to The Sound' features various artists contributing covers of songs from the The Sound’s timeless catalog.  Also includes an extensive booklet, featuring unseen photos, brand new interviews, mental health statistics / resources and more!

As a criminally underrated, yet tremendously influential 1980s UK band, The Sound was seldom acknowledged by and has long since been forgotten by the mainstream.  The story of The Sound has long been inextricably linked to mental health, a connection that was solidified with Adrian Borland’s suicide in 1999.  In the spirit of this cause, we’ve partnered with Painted Brain, a Los Angeles non-profit organization, providing art and community-based solutions to mental health challenges.   100% OF THE PROFITS FROM THE SALE OF THIS COMPILATION WILL BE DONATED TO PAINTED BRAIN, TO PUT TOWARD THEIR VARIOUS PROGRAMS.

  And so here we are: 16 artists who have all been touched and inspired by the music of The Sound, and we’re proud to present our versions of their songs.

Netherlands artist Robin Kester announces the release of her spellbinding debut mini album This Is Not A Democracy (released 11 September via AT EASE) and shares dreamy new single Cigarette Song featuring Conor O’Brien of Villagers on brass section. 

The collaboration arose following Robin Kester’s support of Villagers during their tour through the Netherlands and Belgium, later when recording her new album, she invited O’Brien to collaborate on Cigarette Song. As Kester explains: “I thought the sparse arrangement could benefit from just a little bit of extra magic and I thought that a minimalistic brass arrangement would be the perfect finishing touch.” 

Happy to oblige, O’Brien describes Robin Kester’s music as “Awakening in me a sense of placelessness; her voice embodying the interiority of that abstract figure, lost in the crowd, on an endless journey home. It is at once impressionistic, volatile and graceful but at its heart lies a quiet euphoria.”

It’s a perfect way to describe the seven songs on This Is Not A Democracy, created alongside producer Marien Dorleijn (of Dutch band Moss) in his studio set deep within a former psychiatric institution. The duo combined Kester’s gentle beguiling vocals with experimentations with retro guitars, vintage synthesizers and an antique vibraphonette. The result is a dreamy luscious production drawing inspiration from 70’s pop with touches of Sufjan Stevens’ enigmatic heartbreak lullabies, the chamber-pop of Cate Le Bon, the dreampop of Beach House, and the enveloping, ethereal and otherworldly beauty of Weyes Blood. 

On the beautifully hazy Cigarette Song, Kester lyrically tackles the  more personal matter of a broken marriage.  Where elsewhere on This Is Not A Democracy more abstract concepts are presented, mirroring the album’s often majestic multi-instrumented and dream-like soundscapes, complemented by Kester’s bewitching vocals. Westworld (TV series) is cited as a heavy influence on the record, with both theorising on themes of freewill and self-determination (or the lack thereof), such as on the ethereal Empty Head. Elsewhere nightmares, escapism and shifting mental states are explored, the latter on  the ghostly Portals which sonically captures the feeling of a looming depression with its mysterious strings. Whilst on Sweat and Fright and Day Is Done, two sides of the same sleepless coin are explored, the synthesised melody of Sweat and Fright - which recalls the soulful psych-tinged electronica of Broadcast - is an ode to nightmares, and the kaleidoscopic Day Is Done is described by Kester as “a lullaby for insomniacs.” 

Robin Kester hails from Utrecht, Netherlands. In 2018 she released a series of singles and her debut ‘Peel The Skin’ EP. Her debut single Lost For A Day was included on Spotify’s Viral Chart and was named ‘Track of the Week’ in de Volkskrant (the Netherlands’ equivalent of The Guardian).  Appearances on high-profile TV and radio shows in the Netherlands  followed, including a session for TV show Vrije Geluiden, and interviews and sessions for the country’s lead radio shows Nooit Meer Slapen (Radio 1) and 3voor12 Radio (3fm). Culminating in 2019, in Dutch journalist Gijsbert Kamer (Volkskrant, Radio 1) naming Kester a ‘Talent to Watch’. 

Throughout this period Kester was invited to support the likes of aforementioned Villagers, plus Bent Van Looy, Alela Diane, Laura Gibson, The Bony King of Nowhere and Hayley Heyndrickx on their Netherlands tours,  as well as being invited to perform at leading Netherlands festivals such as Here Comes The Summer, Motel Mozaique and Tweetakt.

Earlier this year, Kester teased out two tracks from the forthcoming mini album This Is Not A Democracy, Remove and Delete which has had radio play from Guy Garvey (BBC 6 Music) and found itself in American DJ and tastemaker Chris Douridas’ KCRW playlist, and Day Is Done which will feature in upcoming American indie film Press Play out later this year.

EP2 is the second EP from Cindygod the new project from former Gauntlet Hair members Andy Rauworth and Craig Nice out July 10th 2020 on Fire Talk. Stereogum noted 2018’s EP1 filled with “new wave shimmers and hooks… a sort of ramshackle and scrappy charm.” The new EP doubles down on the hollowed-out saccharine sound of Rauworth’s recent work, while retaining glitchy agitated electronics that pierce together the best of dream pop, post-punk and indie nostalgia. Fans of Gauntlet Hair rejoice! Cindygod is an honest creative extension of some of those original ideas, a little darker & sinister around the edges.
