Formed nearly 10 years ago while in high school the band now known as Murals have traveled a long road to their debut Full Length LP. After some dips and turns the three core members have landed back in their home town of Louisville, KY. They write record and live in a house on a hill in the not so swank part of town - the type of place that acid trips and all day jam sessions go hand in hand. The results are an ever present body of slow churning psychedelic folk that wouldn't be so surprising in your hippie dad's record collection or buried deep in the crates of your headiest record store.

DIN, the project of Los Angeles's Josie Vand and Greg Vand, are able to extract choice elements from eras past and distill it into an impressively focused and modern sound. Every sound, every texture, every voice falls perfectly into place, as the palette effortlessly winds from warm and pastoral to cold and sharp, leaving you room to both dance and dream. The "Real Dirt" LP is infectiously understated from start to finish, and as the follow up to their "Saturate" EP on Ascetic House it proves that DIN is a serious force in modern synth music. 

Those familiar with the label may recognize Greg Vand from his role in the great High-Functioning Flesh, however DIN will likely appeal more to fans of Factory Floor, Tropic of Cancer, and Boy Harsher. Josie Vand has previously performed as a member of DVA Damas and contributed her visual art talents to the Jealous God label.

On Trickster Blues, their new full length album for Cosmic Dreamer, RF Shannon take a drastic shift from the long form, pensive desert meditations of their previous record. “The process was a drastic shift from the one we took with ‘Jaguar Palace’ and I was hooked. It was a blast all of the time. We kept a quick pace due to external circumstances via random or otherwise inevitable interruptions, so we learned to take what we could get. If a take was good, it was a keeper, we didn’t second guess it. In just four days we had demoed the majority of my new material and it just felt so right.’’ explains Shane Renfro, the mind behind RF Shannon.

The final product of the seize the moment approach behind the writing and recording process echoes the themes Trickster Blues attempts to dissect. “The lyrics are about acknowledging consequences and saying "so what", the reward is worth the risk, etc. Its about feeling a pull, a calling, and dedicating to it hell or high water, whatever that may be. Its the heart of it all.’’ Renfro continues. To be able to listen and say “That’s it, thats the song. It is what it is, and we like what it is” Sounds a little underwhelming in that sense, but thats what I wanted. I just wanted the songs to speak for themselves. Our old material is challenging and dense, and I love it. I love the spaces we have created. But I wanted to record songs that could just stand alone and be what they are.''

Born out of natural and self-imposed boundaries, the final product is an album that lives in the sonic space between desert blues and old school R&B. At times heavy like a jackhammer while maintaining the velvety vocal deliveries of Renfro, Trickster Blues is an album that embraces the natural indecision surrounding the songwriting process and goes with its gut decision every step of the way. By working on the principal that if the first impression of a song is good enough at the moment then it is good enough to be the final product, Trickster Blues paints a portrait of Renfro’s truth and his truth alone. “Maybe its a terrible mistake, maybe its better this way” comments Renfro on the writing process. “I think that’s what this record will always mean to me. Thats kind of the Trickster in a way. Many different facets, but the name conjures a sort of pure whimsical mischief, a dose of raw wild impulse that reminds you to laugh at whatever it is thats happening.”

Demoed in four days in Marfa and recorded in two in Lockhart, Texas with the help of Jesse Woods and Will Patterson, the album is demanding in it’s immediacy while providing a raw and profound insight to the raw sonic & lyrical landscape Renfro & Co have crafted.

David Wingo is a busy man.  In the years since the release of his last record as Ola Podrida, he's written and recorded soundtracks for several movies including Take Shelter (winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2011), MUD (starring Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon), and Prince Avalanche (starring Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch and co-composed with Explosions In The Sky), both of which are seeing wide release this coming spring/summer. When he had time in between films, Wingo assembled a live band featuring Colin Swietek on guitars, Matt Clark on bass, and David Hobizal on drums and began to bring his new songs in to the band.  A first for Ola Podrida, the new album Ghosts Go Blind was recorded to tape in a proper studio, mostly live, with the full band.  The resulting songs are energetic and accessible, while Wingo's abstract narratives are more personal and intimate than ever.   

Throughout the album bittersweet memories of youth are filtered through the nostalgic eyes of a man starting to accept his adult life for the first time.  The album opens with last guy at the party pleading for someone to stay with him, and keep the revelry going a little longer.  It's an almost cringeworthy desperation, and yet Wingo makes it feel relatable.  The final refrain "It's no fun, being alone at the end" takes on a bigger meaning, giving you the feeling his friends have grown up and moved on, leaving him to decide how he'll proceed with his life.  By the middle of the album, the character has evolved, now pleading with his partner again, but this time the goal is to stay home and shut out the world.  

Part of what makes this album so satisfying is how elegantly Wingo uses the mundane, common events of day-to-day life to conjure tales of desperation, resignation, and reflection.  The power of Wingo's storytelling is magnified by Swietek's shimmering riffs and Clark and Hobizal's alternately propulsive and restrained rhythms.  In the end, Ghosts Go Blind is about finding someone you resonate with and want to grow old with, appreciating the carefree days of youth, and steadying yourself for whatever comes next.
