Who'll Think of Me?

Dan sez: My freshman year college roommate and I were great fits - on paper, both loving sports and music. I was a folkie who played racquet sports, and he was a football player whose favorite band was Skid Row, but he also had a thing for musical theater, AND made the very competitive college a capella group So, an interesting but not incompatible mix, and I got to learn all the bass parts for the a capella group that I hadn't  gotten into.

We got along perfectly well, and I still to this day honor him for coming back from winter break in Minneapolis with a CD he said I'd love, by this band he'd heard at a house party called Boiled In Lead. The CD was called Orb. I was skeptical, until he turned it on. It was brilliant.

At that point BiL had been going for almost ten years, and my instant fandom coincided nicely with a rerelease of their first two records, one of which featured them wrangling a Celtic punk version of this catchy tune. I learned it pretty quickly and have been noodling it about for the last 25 years, then started noodling it in new ways and settings a few weeks back as posted at my LDSB page. I was confident Jeff would be able to mash them together and he as always has exceeded my expectations both in instrumental additions and exquisite production. There's a lot going on -   we tried to capture and blend several of the iterations and voices a fiddle tune can take, and lay it all over a drum line inspired by the MS Hill Country fife and drum tradition.

The song itself is another one that owes its popularity in the old-time community to Henry Reed, as filtered through Alan Jabbour of the Hollow Rock String Band. Jabbour recorded Reed playing this at his home, August 27, 1966 (shame we didn't make the 50th anniversary exactly for our posting! didn't even realize it though), and again on October 28, 1967, when he called it New Castle. Crooked tune enthusiasts latched onto it, often slowed way down, and there are plenty of versions available on YouTube. You can't beat the source though, which you can listen to here:

My latest "opus" on a Poem: "The Human Abstract" - From Songs of Experience by William Blake*, spoken by Russel Sinfield, important the remark, he spoke this for me, without !!! my music, to bpm only, so this was my approach, to give random a chance, and hope, it would fit! So, slices and dices, Equalization on his vocals is under my responsibility!!! I'm grateful to have his native speaker voice for this project! The "true" instrument is my flute. All other stuff my midi juggling!
