the singular style of laroche’s sound comes to a calamitous head in PARIDAIZA, forging the basis of a sound the artist calls ‘dungeon debke’. 

the dungeon is felt, the walls and claustraphobia of emotion and darkness are eminating from each track but something is trancended and a place that could have meant torture or imprisonment becomes an escape into the beauty of ritual meditation and immanence.

the chants and calls that haunt laroche’s music recontextualise words from such sources as the ancient poet Rumi and the protest chants of the arab spring, melting the history and present of the middle east into a sonic tapestry of insurgence and spirituality that hypnotises.

laroche evokes queen tamar, first king/queen of georgia to renounce the gendering of her title. in PARIDAIZA susu takes as patron this figure of ancient rebellion.

Fis and Renick Bell’s collaboration started in 2017 with a commissioned performance for Berlin Atonal. Since then the pair have embarked on a performance and recording research project called Emergence. Exploring Renick’s expertise in generative techniques and Fis’ sound design and signal processing, this project will be documented periodically on Saplings - beginning with Emergence Vol. 1 on October 3rd. The 18 track volume is a cross-section of palettes and techniques explored over four separate recording sessions since 2017. Released biodigitally, Emergence Vol. 1 will fund a minimum of 100 trees per sale.
