Hailing out of Leipzig, Vincent Neumann is the epitome of a skilled jockey, clinical on the momentum and transition but by no means standoffish or emotionless. Far from that, his sets deploy the most infectious arsenal of incendiary wares, spanning the whole spectrum of electronics with panache and poise. Psychotherapist by trade, Neumann's acute understanding of the dancer's psyche sure shines bright through this helluva hectic treat. To those who've been lucky enough to attend one of his seminal ten-hour sets this will ring a most emotional bell, to those who're yet to experience it, we're certain the present mix will offer an ideal point of entry into his ever-tasteful selections and supreme knack for groove manipulation. Top-shelf material.

He's a real Florida dance music enthusiast and has shown me so much of the IDM-miami-bass-techy-housey fusion that the state has gifted to the world of dance music. He djs alongside @wngdu (see FRiends and Family Ep. 21) in Denver as Loudmen. They've brought @billconverse, @jonnyfromspace, DJ Fitness, and others into Denver, and they have huge plans (can't reveal yet) for Denver this summer. So if you're in the area...TIP!

Mitch Smith: FRiends and Family Ep. 60

For episode 61, we have OKC close scene co-conspirator @crkdjw. I met Garrett when he came to one of our Critical Mess parties a while back. I didn't know who he was, but I just saw the way he was dancing and really listening to the music that he knew what was up. While trying to not make too eager of moves, I went up and told him we gotta chop it up. 

When I think of the most exciting DJs in OKC right now, Garrett is always there in my mind. He has an appetite for brain-scratchy sounds, drummy techno, with a dose of minimal inflections...and there's always excitement selection-wise given his broad taste in music outside of the dance floor. What we're all about! He's been really exercising some restraint lately, and this mix shows where he's been at in his bag lately. Excellent music, enjoy!

Yax: FRiends and Family Ep. 62

For episode 63, I am very excited and honored to have a special mix by Oklahoma City major head Stin from @chatpile . This is just over an hour of a musical history of all shades of underground freak rock/punk/metal from Oklahoma City. Beginning in the 70s and ending with our current moment. As someone who stepped into this chronology as a fan and fellow noise-maker in the late 00s/early 10s, I personally found it invigorating to understand on a deeper sonic level where the sounds were coming from that we were all making. Today you will hear people talk about the loss of regional sound identities, but I’m hoping that the act of drawing from the ghosts of your local alternative spheres has not completely died out. After listening to the mix, it seems like those connections you find with the roots of a scene happen in many different ways and are often unconscious. For example, playing in bands with people slightly older than you, finding the same records at the local shops, attending gigs together and soaking up the same influences. There are bands, people, and labels mentioned in here that make up the core of my music-loving DNA. There were so many older freaks who were taking care of me as a teenager while I was out on a school night at The Conservatory (legendary OKC venue) catching music from around the world at wildly cheap door costs. And then I imagine that happening to those who were older than me when they were kids…a beautiful freaky cycle. 

I can’t mention enough how much Stin is a pillar of our local music scene in OKC. He ran a tape label called Nerd Party, which he mentions. @dusthousestudio is where I and so many people in the City recorded our records (Chat Pile still records there!). I wouldn’t have seen so many awesome bands that came through OKC in the 00s and 10s, if it weren’t for Stin and his friends nudging me to go. The Speed Falkon tape that he put out (he plays a track off of it) is one of my all-time favorite OKC underground installments. I played that tape OUT. And I just checked…it’s not even listed on Discogs. There are some real delights here that you won’t hear outside of Stin’s bedroom. Truly honored to have him open up his media collection to us with this Okie curatorial lens and for the bits and bobs shared in between the music. I hope you enjoy, and since he says he’s down, we will definitely be inviting him for another episode of specialties. But first, sit back and enjoy the sounds of the OKC underground as selected by Stin!

We feel absolutely blessed to welcome Adelia on Cellar Door. The Prague born and Barcelona based  DJ started her career with a heavier and darker techno sounds, however she quickly gravitated towards the deep and hypnotic sphere.

Getting inspired by the Spanish nature, she has  been brilliantly pursuing  the gurgling sound and representing it on some of the most interesting mixing platforms (Oslated, Charybdis, Fur:ther Sessions etc.)

Techno hit Japan hard in the early 1990s. Surprised, Takaaki Itoh was quickly impressed and intrigued with this new sound. The unique style of beats revealed the gateway to a new world of underground music in Japan – something he had never heard before. Surprise slowly gave way to addiction when Takaaki Itoh was exposed to the sounds of such artists and labels as Underground Resistance, Derrick May, Jeff Mills, Hardfloor, Sven V?, Harthouse, Warp and Rising High. This was his sound, and deciding he just couldn’t get enough of it, in 1994 Takaaki began to organize his own techno parties in his home of northern Japan. By providing a fantastic lineup, his parties quickly became a success.
