He is the founding member of Research & Development. ﻿What started as a monthly event series at Smartbar took on a new path with a biweekly mix series focused on nurturing new sounds, experiences and atmospheres while exploring the music and culture it was born or mutated from. For episode 61, we have OKC close scene co-conspirator @crkdjw. I met Garrett when he came to one of our Critical Mess parties a while back. I didn't know who he was, but I just saw the way he was dancing and really listening to the music that he knew what was up. While trying to not make too eager of moves, I went up and told him we gotta chop it up. 

When I think of the most exciting DJs in OKC right now, Garrett is always there in my mind. He has an appetite for brain-scratchy sounds, drummy techno, with a dose of minimal inflections...and there's always excitement selection-wise given his broad taste in music outside of the dance floor. What we're all about! He's been really exercising some restraint lately, and this mix shows where he's been at in his bag lately. Excellent music, enjoy!

Crooked Jaw: FRiends and Family Ep. 61

We are thrilled to present this mix by Chicago based JS Alvarez for our 39th entry in the series. Both Adam and I admire what Jeremy contributes to the music scene with their podcast and event series Research & Development.

JS Alvarez is a shape shifting lizard that has learned human behavior from living in cities such as Chicago and Miami. He succumbs to no one genre and can be found exploring the depths of mutant techno and unruly bass music alike.

He is the founding member of Research & Development which ignited in the iconic Chicago mainstay of Smartbar. The event series has moved on to host community focused events centered on a wide variety of often cutting edge electronic sounds at venues like Podlasie Club, The Whistler and various DIY spaces. R&D also hosts a biweekly podcast 100+ episodes deep ranging from rising talents, hometown heroes and well established DJs and producers from North America and around the world.

He's shared the booth with artists such as DVS1, Veronika Vasicka, D.Dan, Hodge and others. His mixes have been featured on NTS Radio, Mutant Radio and SutroFM among others. Catch him at The Great Beyond this July! 

I was trying to find a very textured sound within the first quarter of the mix. My attempt at some sort of atmospheric sci-fi horror score followed by something a bit more hypnotic. By the end of the mix I wanted those vibes to explode into something highly rhythmic. Something to shatter what came before and get the sweat dripping off the walls.

Yax: FRiends and Family Ep. 62

For episode 63, I am very excited and honored to have a special mix by Oklahoma City major head Stin from @chatpile . This is just over an hour of a musical history of all shades of underground freak rock/punk/metal from Oklahoma City. Beginning in the 70s and ending with our current moment. As someone who stepped into this chronology as a fan and fellow noise-maker in the late 00s/early 10s, I personally found it invigorating to understand on a deeper sonic level where the sounds were coming from that we were all making. Today you will hear people talk about the loss of regional sound identities, but I’m hoping that the act of drawing from the ghosts of your local alternative spheres has not completely died out. After listening to the mix, it seems like those connections you find with the roots of a scene happen in many different ways and are often unconscious. For example, playing in bands with people slightly older than you, finding the same records at the local shops, attending gigs together and soaking up the same influences. There are bands, people, and labels mentioned in here that make up the core of my music-loving DNA. There were so many older freaks who were taking care of me as a teenager while I was out on a school night at The Conservatory (legendary OKC venue) catching music from around the world at wildly cheap door costs. And then I imagine that happening to those who were older than me when they were kids…a beautiful freaky cycle. 

I can’t mention enough how much Stin is a pillar of our local music scene in OKC. He ran a tape label called Nerd Party, which he mentions. @dusthousestudio is where I and so many people in the City recorded our records (Chat Pile still records there!). I wouldn’t have seen so many awesome bands that came through OKC in the 00s and 10s, if it weren’t for Stin and his friends nudging me to go. The Speed Falkon tape that he put out (he plays a track off of it) is one of my all-time favorite OKC underground installments. I played that tape OUT. And I just checked…it’s not even listed on Discogs. There are some real delights here that you won’t hear outside of Stin’s bedroom. Truly honored to have him open up his media collection to us with this Okie curatorial lens and for the bits and bobs shared in between the music. I hope you enjoy, and since he says he’s down, we will definitely be inviting him for another episode of specialties. But first, sit back and enjoy the sounds of the OKC underground as selected by Stin!

For our 65th mix, we are excited to present NYC techno enthusiast sweetheart community champion major head @antron22

Antron has been doing his Basal Rate twice a month on 8ball Radio since 2022. I met him at the inspiring 8ball studios when I was visiting for a show with @sorry-records @nickboydnyc -- just way too much good energy for one room if you ask me. He took this past summer to hit the woodshed on vinyl mixing, and after many sweaty hours hunched over the mixer, this is the first mix he's unleashing from the zone. We are proud he wanted to house it in our mix series. Listening to his mixes, I always get so excited about techno. Antron: FRiends and Family Ep. 65

For episode 64 of FRiends and Family, we have long-time listener, first time caller Language Models (@t1ck). Language Models is a raver and fan of Fixed Rhythms who lives in Milwaukee, WI doing DJ stuff at Cactus Club and teaching stuff at UWM.

With this vinyl mix, clocking in a little under 2 hours, LM takes it into lots of zones. Twists and turns exploring a surplus of possibilities with touches of honest cynicism and a couple reorienting deconstructions. Lots of questions posed, and lots of hope.

We're excited to have @jsalvarez for our 13th episode! This mix does not deny our terrifying present. It explores darkness, pessimism, but settles in the end with a careful hopefulness. 

Alvarez engulfed himself in punk, hardcore and metal from a ripe age while growing up in Miami. While performing with a handful of hardcore punk and post punk bands, his musical taste expanded widely. So he decided to give DJing a chance. After celebrating 2 years of running a successful dance party in Miami, he moved on to Chicago, cutting his teeth on more disco and soul. Now he finds himself as a resident at Chicago's Smartbar with a monthly series called Research & Development. Although Research & Development focuses on techno, it consistently seeks to highlight artists who blur the lines of genre and experiment within and outside dance music. At FR, we're all about that. Tune in!!
